23.01.2022 Mandela's words are our moral compass - for humanity, not inhumanity. Including for people on the move! You don’t have to like me to respect my rights. I don’t ...have to agree with you to uphold your rights. You don’t have to be like me, for me to protect your rights. Rights are not a system of endorsement or appreciation they are not an award or a test result nor a beauty parade. Human rights are for the best and for the worst of us. For each of us to the exclusion of none of us in the interests of all of us. http://ow.ly/zfSJ304oiCk See more

12.01.2022 We need more fathers to follow on Ohanian's footsteps. "Ohanian, as the co-founder of Reddit, is one of the world’s most high-profile tech entrepreneurs and he’s long been an advocate for better paid parental leave policy in the U.S. He has used his profile at Reddit (and as Serena Williams’ husband), to encourage other men to consider taking parental leave, if they have it available to them."

11.01.2022 Since the lock-down of March 2020, we have been running live Zoom sessions every Sunday at 5.00 pm for our women members to connect and chat. Initially, the communication revolved around how each woman was experiencing the lock-down, its emotional impact, and tips for coping and making the most of it. Since May, our weekly live chats have evolved and are now directed toward a particular focus where women share their collective wisdom in areas of personal leadership. Topics d...iscussed have thus far included: The impact of the COVID-19 lock-down: unemployment, new modes employment and working from home with children Mother’s Day: the impact of our mothers in our lives Initial discussion on Conspiracy theories surrounding COVID-19 and outlook The increase of Domestic abuse and family dysfunction amidst the COVID-19 lock-down Experiencing Professional Jealousy Exploring aspects of Work-Life Balance Time Management: strategies, skills and planning In June we launched our INFORMED LENS SERIES with experts on health issues relevant to all of us. This is the 4th in that series.

07.01.2022 FREE ZOOM PRESENTATION- Sunday 4/10 at 5.00 pm Session 25. INFORMED LENS SERIES with Professor Vasso Apostolopoulos... October is both Breast Cancer and Mental Health awareness month. We will kick off our free zoom sessions with our regular supporter and contributor Professor Vasso Apostolopoulos, followed by Professor Alex Parker the following week. Professor Vasso Apostolopoulos is a world-renowned researcher who has been recognised with over 100 awards for the outstanding results of her research. Vasso was the first in the world to develop the concept of immunotherapy for cancer in the early 1990s, which today is used by hundreds of labs around the world. Immunotherapy aims to boost specific immune cells and program them to kill cancer cells; it was used by Vasso to develop the world’s first breast cancer vaccine with phase I, II and III clinical trials completed. Of note, one of the studies now has long-term follow-up data showing that 20 years later those injected with the vaccine remain cancer free. It has been licensed to an Australian pharmaceutical company. Using immunotherapy, Vasso has also developed the world’s first ovarian cancer vaccine, which attracted the investment by a pharmaceutical company and has been commercialised in the Middle East. Committed to the wide-ranging benefits of immunotherapy, Vasso has applied this approach to other diseases including a vaccine for multiple sclerosis (which will undergo human clinical trials early in 2019). Vasso’s work has been awarded a research grant to develop a vaccine for type-1 diabetes. As you are aware we cap numbers so please book early in order not to be disappointed.https://www.trybooking.com/BLWQG

06.01.2022 LATROBE UNI Food for Thought Network's letter & Latrobe's response. Dear all, We at Food for Thought Network would like to acknowledge Latrobe University’s long-standing commitment to Modern Greek Studies and ancient Mediterranean culture but at the same time we would like to express our disappointment at the pending closure of the Greek Studies program at Latrobe. ... While we acknowledge that the onset of COVID-19 has necessitated cuts to unviable programs and introduced cut saving measures, we would like to request that the University consider maintaining the Greek studies program that has been running for 38 years. There has been long-standing research that Languages Matter and UNESCO affirms that continued commitment to promoting multilingualism is a pillar of cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue. This is one of the core objectives of the University’s strategic action plan 2018-2022. The University proposes to educate global citizens through cross-cultural curriculum, outbound mobility, language teaching and a wide range of employability experiences Language programs at Latrobe University facilitate and further this objective and discontinuing modern Greek, Hindi, Indonesian as well as creative arts is a serious blow to multiculturalism, cultural diversity and language maintenance. Some of us are fellow academics who understand the value of learning a community language and others are mothers of children who are committed to bringing up their children learning to speak Greek and being immersed in Greek culture. Although as the Greek community we are making our best efforts to ensure the maintenance of our language and culture, this is not enough. Studies at a tertiary level are required to provide the necessary educational background and training for future teachers and a chance for our young adults to consolidate their Greek language knowledge more generally. We would like to ask what it would take for the University to reconsider its position on terminating the program. We would be more than willing to collaborate with you in any way to ensure that the university considers an alternative course of action and allow current and future generations to continue to have the opportunity to study Greek within the Modern Greek Studies program Yours sincerely, Dr Maria Karidakis & Varvara Ioannou Founder and Chair Food for Thought Network Inc An Inclusive Greek Australian Women’s Network [email protected] www.fftn.org.au 0403034527
