25.01.2022 PBL is here! A select class of year 8 students have been exploring the potential of Project Based Learning over the course of term 3. The students of 8L have been developing unique conservation campaigns in an effort to raise awareness for animals effected by bushfires. Students will continue working through term 4 on their self-directed conservation projects and are hoping to have the opportunity to present them to the wider Figtree community once complete. Teachers Blake Thomas, Emily Richards and Dylan Jones have taken the time to plan this Project Based Learning initiative as a trial for the implementation of a 2021 PBL Class.



24.01.2022 Congratulations to our Year 12 Visual Arts students who submitted their Body of Work last week. This year’s exhibition was an impressive display of talent, hard work and dedication. Their artworks explored a wide range of mediums and reflected their personal world. Take a look at these photographs of our students with their final Body of Work. 24.01.2022 **Congratulations to Isabella Brevis-Perini completing her HSC Spanish Oral Exam** Isabella has been completing Spanish continuers throughout both Year 11 & 12 ...via Distance Education and has always shown an outstanding attitude towards her work and a disciplined approach, which has created outstanding results for her. Her many assessment tasks have been completed with distinction and she is consistently ranked in the top 3 students for each task. She should be congratulated for her mature and consistent approach to her studies.We wish her well in her final exam in early November. See more

23.01.2022 Congratulations to Ala Ali (Year 10) for winning this year's Harmony Day poster competition. Each year the Harmony Day poster competition attracts thousands of entries and brings out the creativity and passion of school students motivated by a desire for a peaceful and inclusive society. The competition is open to all primary and secondary students across NSW and the ACT.

22.01.2022 Illawarra Multicultural Youth Conference On Friday the 20th of November, students from Figtree High School participated in the Annual Illawarra Multicultural Youth Conference which was held as an online event for the first time due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Conference, now in it’s 15th year, continues to empower young people who have been in the country for less than five years to make informed and positive life choices. Students have the opportunity to consult with local service providers and get feedback on some of the issues that affect young people, their families and their communities, providing them with information and knowledge that they may have missed out on due to their settlement journey or recent arrival in Australia. https://youtu.be/efFiMQoDeWw

21.01.2022 ** Congratulations Claudia Stiff on completing the HSC Dance Practical** Figtree HS would like to congratulate Claudia on her completion of her HSC Dance practi...cal assessments.Claudia has worked extremely hard to maintain an additional subject via Distance Education and it has been the catalyst that has kept her at school and engaged. Not only has Claudia been able to complete her practical studies with great success, it has also enabled her to keep healthy and focused as well as developing a high level of discipline. 21.01.2022 **Year 10 student - Jaymz Smith secures School Based Traineeship with REECE Plumbing** Yesterday, Jaymz Smith of Year 10 went through the 'sign up' paperwork fo...r his offer of School Based Traineeship with REECE Plumbing at North Wollongong. Jaymz had completed a series of Work Experience and online assessments before being offered the position. Vickie Shackley from Murray Mallee training along with Jaymz' mother Joana were on hand at the sign up and Vickie reported back that Jaymz had an excellent work ethic as well as superior communication skills and initiative. Jaymz will work each Wednesday and additionally on Saturday morning at the North Wollongong store whilst still completing his senior studies. Congratulations Jaymz!!

16.01.2022 The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Congratulations to Soe Reh, Dee Ree, Anastasia Tsangaris, Amber Cheesewright and Lee Meh for their attainment of the BRONZE AWARD of the THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH'S INTERNATIONAL AWARD. ... This award is an internationally recognised program for young people, building their skills to equip them for life and work. By creating opportunities for young people to develop skills, get physically active, give service and experience adventure, the Award can play a critical role in their development. Figtree High School students participated in volunteering at St Francis of Assisi Warrawong Primary school where they listened to students read. They participated in two overnight trips and outdoor group work challenges at Stanwell Tops Conference Centre. They also participated in the PCYC Graff Off and volunteering community project with Shellharbour Council. Other programs they completed include Retail Training, Industry Training and Food Safe Handling. These were all completed through the Links2Learning program which the students attended every Tuesday throughout 2019.

15.01.2022 Girls Try a Trade day - Supporting and Linking Tradeswomen (SALT) A fantastic day was had by our 18 Figtree High girls who attended the Girls Trades Day at... the North Wollongong PCYC today. The girls were taught how to use a variety of tools for Carpentry and finished with a very professional tool caddy that they worked on as a project throughout the day. Many thanks to Fi Shewring and her team from SALT who mentored and guided the girls throughout the day. Each person shared their own career journey and spoke about their passion working in trades. 15.01.2022 Today Year 7 were involved in a day of celebrating Aboriginal culture. Students participated in a rotation of activities throughout the day including Indigenous games, Artefacts, Caring for Country and Art.

14.01.2022 The Creative and Performing Arts Committee (CAPA Co) would like to thank everyone who contributed to the Creative Cupcake Fundraiser. Collectively we raised $579.65. 12.01.2022 Early this year and late last year devastating bushfires ravaged through many communities across NSW, leaving an inundation of loss and grief. The Figtree High School community wanted to do something to help. After much research our SRC decided they'd like to support Ulladulla High School’s ‘Dj ama-nj Schools Plus Project’. 11.01.2022 The CAPAL faculty is excited to announce Tobias Moore, Emily Stephens, Ruby Tozzi and Caitlin Rodrigues have been selected for Operation Art 2020. Operation Art is the premier state-wide Visual Arts exhibition for school students from Kindergarten to Year 10. The fantastic artworks can be viewed at the Armory Gallery, Sydney Olympic Park and the Art Gallery of New South Wales later this year.

08.01.2022 This week we are celebrating NAIDOC Week! It is a week that celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This Years theme Always Was, Always Will Be recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. They are spiritually and culturally connected to this country.

06.01.2022 Continuing our celebration of Education Week, take a look at the exciting projects and hands-on learning happening in TAS. Year 11 Food Technology completed Lemon Meringue Tarts as a part of a project investigating the functional properties of food. Year 10 Construction students finally got to complete their tile mosaic projects. Year 9 food Technology are happy to finally be able to cook in the kitchens again. Year 11 Hospitality are developing their industry related service skills by running a breakfast through the school’s education cafe "The Coffee Bean Cafe". #EdWeek2020

06.01.2022 **University of Wollongong -Summer Master Class Certificates of Achievement presentation** Today we were able to recognise the outstanding work from eleven of o...ur Year 12 students who successfully completed the Summer Master Class at the University of Wollongong over the January summer holiday period. Over the course of three weeks students completed a six credit point university level subject. They took part in lectures and tutorials and completed assessment tasks and group work activities, all in an online environment. We would like to congratulate Rhys Cleary, Philip Gjorgjijoski, Nina Graovac, Chloe Jovanoski, Kobie Kokkin, Jayden Kreutzer, Marina Kyriacou, Chris Louca, Zali Moore, Daniel Petrevski and Holly Wyatt. The students were presented with their Certificate of Achievement with many students achieving a High Distinction or Distinction grade. Well done Year 12.

06.01.2022 **Taylah Edwards- Work Experience at MMJ North Real Estate** Taylah Edwards from Year 10 has been enjoying her week at the MMJ North Real Estate office during h...er Work Experience. She has been mentored by Kayla McMahon and has been learning all about the world of Real Estate. Kayla has said that Taylah has been a great representative of Figtree HS, with Taylah showing enthusiasm, great work ethic and a genuine interest in the area. Thanks to Kayla and the team from MMJ North for coordinating this enjoyable and rewarding experience.

06.01.2022 September is 'Read a New Book' month. Our Year 7 students at Figtree High School are currently progressing through an Accelerated Reading Program as part of the Library Literacy lessons. Each student has been assessed for their appropriate reading level and have chosen a book of interest from either our library or an ebook from our digital library - eplatform. Students are actively reading in lessons and are encouraged to read at home to expand their knowledge and develop their vocubulary and comprehension skills. Regular quizzes will take place to help measure student reading progress and achievement.

06.01.2022 Congratulations to Ruby Tozzi who has been selected from over 500 students in the Operation Art exhibition to be a part of the Touring 50 Award. The artworks from the Touring 50 Award will tour NSW galleries in 2021, opening first at the Art Gallery of NSW in March 2021. They will then find their home in the permanent art collection at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

04.01.2022 **Figtree HS girls excel at Greater Southern NSW Rugby League trials** Four Figtree HS girls have been selected in the U16 Greater Southern NSW Rugby League tea...m. Girls Rugby League is a pilot program for NSWCHS in 2021 and has seen 100s of girls from all across the Southern NSW region trialling for a place in the representative pathway to NSWCHS. The selected girls Kasey Reh, Zali O'Brien, Jayda Patrick and Chelsea Savill have all shown exceptional ability and now have a chance to be selected in the first ever NSWCHS U16 girls team. The girls will play in mid August against the other greater NSW regions and if they can maintain their current form will be pushing for a prestigious position in the team. At the team announcements Jayda Patrick was nominated as a South Coast best performer and Kasey Reh was presented with a jersey as Player of the Carnival. See more

04.01.2022 ** Anastasia Tsangaris - ANZ Bank School Based Traineeship** Anastasia Tsangaris from Year 10 has been successful in stage 1 of the School Based Traineeship pro...gram after application and interviews were completed today. Chad Smith from 1300 apprentice gave a glowing report on Anastasia's excellent interview and application. 03.01.2022 Year 7 have commenced their History studies this semester. As part of the Investigating the Ancient Past" unit, 7N participated in a ‘dig’, excavating important 'artefacts' that also doubled up as a delicious snack! Firstly, the ‘archaeologists’ had to hypothesise how many chips were in their ‘artefact’, then carefully excavate each chip using a bamboo skewer before finalising their findings and reflecting on the excavation process. ... Ms Clifford and Ms Karykides assisted in ensuring all 7N ‘archaeologists’ were COVID safe, by using gloves to distribute required materials and using hand sanitiser. Great job 7N!

03.01.2022 Congratulations to our students Bailey Craft, Tom Duncan and Kaylen Craft who as a part of the South Coast Open Hockey team are now State Champions. They defeated Sydney North in the Grand Final 2-0. A special congratulations to Tom Duncan who has been selected in the NSW State team

03.01.2022 SPOTLIGHT on YEAR 9 FOOD TECHNOLOGY Year 9 students have been busy developing NEW FOOD PRODUCTS. The design brief was to design a product that could be served at a movie theatre. The twist..... students were given specific food manufacturers. The students had to create a line extension for the company that could be potentially served at a movie.

02.01.2022 SPOTLIGHT on TAS Year 7 Practical Examination - PIZZA Year 7 have been working through a design task this semester. The brief was to create a Pizza that was nutritious for teenagers and used produce from the school garden. Some creative designs were completed, particularly Leah who blended vegetables into her sauce and Madi who included lamb into her design.
