20.01.2022 *BACKING OUR FARMERS* Since joining the Senate last year, I've been privileged to represent the interests of all Queenslanders, but particularly our primary pro...ducers who grow the world's best food and fibre. Whether it's bananas at Tully, tomatoes at Bowen, cane at Ingham, beef at Julia Creek, sheep at Tambo, wheat at Roma or coffee at Mareeba, we can be extremely proud of our farmers and the way they do it. Sadly, primary producers are under increasing attacks by activists who ignore the great improvements in sustainability and land management our farmers have achieved. We should thank farmers every day, but today especially we show our appreciation. 17.01.2022 MANGO LOVERS ALL SMILES BUT GROWERS WORRY ABOUT WEATHER AND LOOMING LABOUR SHORTAGES Anticipation is mounting in the far north Queensland mango heartlan...d, as trees enter the final stages of growth ahead of an intense summer harvest period from late November through to February. Frost hit hard in some parts of Mutchilba and Dimbulah and as always, growers such as Brian and Steven Schincariol won't rest until their beautiful mangoes are in a box on their way to market. Even then, there are no guarantees prices will hold up.

16.01.2022 Scott and Jenny | #pickqld pioneers | Stanthorpe We spent our first 3 weeks in Stanthorpe putting nets on the grapevines to keep the birds off the grapes. ...We found muscles we didn’t know we had! Lots of stretching and liniment were the order of the day. We’d read about the shortage of harvest workers and thought we’d see if we could help. We had nothing planned after Christmas and had always wanted to visit the Granite Belt. I sent emails to 12 vineyards advising we were heading in their direction in January and to keep us in mind if they needed any workers. We did grape picking, as well as tomatoes and capsicums, for 9 weeks. While we were netting, we worked from 8am4pm. The first couple of weeks it was very hot and we went through copious amounts of water. Once the grape harvest began, we started picking at 6am and picked until that type of grape (Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon etc) was all picked. Sometimes it was half a day’s work, sometimes a whole day. We had some days off during this period and travelled around checking out the region. On picking days there were between 6 and 8 other pickers. It was very friendly and we were encouraged to take frequent breaks and drink when needed. There were a couple of young guys helping out and they were very respectful of us oldies and always made sure we weren’t carrying the heavy bins. We were also able to take advantage of the ‘back to work in agriculture’ incentive, which helped us with travel and accommodation costs. We would definitely do it again and recommend it to anyone. You don’t have to commit to a whole season. The farmers need pickers so badly. 13.01.2022 Did you know that coffee was first grown in Queensland from the late 1880's? This image is from the Streets Creek Farm at Kuranda and was taken in the early 19...00's. There were a number of plantations in the region around this time. The industry slowly disappeared in the 1920's, following rises in labour costs and damage from cyclones, before coffee growing made a come back in the Mareeba district in the 1980's. #skyburyfarms #skyburycoffee #familyfarming #australiangrown #australianroasted #australiancoffee #homegrown #mareebagrown
