25.01.2022 "Science can help remove that stigma with studies like ours showing that eating disorders are fundamentally biological in nature and that, just like other diseases, there may be ways to prevent or treat eating disorders if we understand the biological causes."

24.01.2022 The findings, published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, provide more evidence that the abundance and diversity of the gut microbiota -- the trillions of ...bacteria that affect digestive health and immunity -- could also affect the so-called "gut-brain axis." This research suggests that gut bacteria could play a prominent role in the debilitating symptoms of anorexia nervosa, a serious eating disorder that affects more than 3 million Americans and has the highest mortality rate of any psychological disorder. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releas/2015//151005121310.htm See more

24.01.2022 Tune into SBS on Tuesday night at 8:30pm to see our friends, Dr. Sloane Madden (psychiatrist at Westmead Children's Hospital) and Sarah McMahon (psychologist at BodyMatters Australasia) talk on the dangers of Australia's current health obsession.

24.01.2022 "Anorexia nervosa -- an eating disorder that makes people obsessive about their weight -- could alter the brain circuits and impact its taste-reward processing ...mechanisms, especially for sugar, a study has found. While most people like sweet tasting things, those with eating disorders associate the taste with weight gain and try to avoid it. The study showed that the brain activation among the anorexia group was inversely connected with any pleasant experience of eating sugar. Those who are already worried about shape and weight become even more concerned. And a strong response that says "feed me" might be overwhelming and trigger more food restriction instead of eating." 23.01.2022 Intuitive Eating is a set of principles that are very helpful through the recovery process, guided by a skilled and experienced practitioner. Still, it's a proc...ess that's widely misunderstood. Here, ED Dietitian Aaron Flores explains why..... "Intuitive eating tends to bring up a lot of feelings with folks as they move through different stages of recovery from eating disorders. In my work, I find that it is a topic that can lead to some difficult conversations around food and bodies. Intuitive eating is often misunderstood on many different levels and so Id like to start talking about what intuitive eating is NOT in the hopes of dispelling some myths. " Thankyou Aaron and National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA)

22.01.2022 For everyone in treatment for, recovered from or at risk of an ED, please heed the Butterfly Foundation's advice around the upcoming film 'To the bone'.

22.01.2022 If we are calculating what to eat, how can we eat intuitively. Shouldn't our bodies tell us how much we need, rather than our heads? Unfortunately Australia is heading in the same direction. If you're struggling to work out how to enjoy eating in this calorie-phobic world, there are professionals who can help. Make a dietitian appointment at Appetite for Change to start you on your new journey.

22.01.2022 Im proud to have been part of the National Eating Disorders Collaboration introductory digital training package for those new to the eating disorders field. I was honoured to be asked to speak on the Nutritional Management for eating disorders, and hope that all the videos will be valuable resources. https://www.nedc.com.au//eating-disorders-nutritional-mana

21.01.2022 So important to see this evidence acknowledged in the literature. Hopefully we can use this to convince hospitals emergency departments to not overlook, dismiss or discharge very unwell patients just because theyre not thin enough. And I wouldnt be surprised if my concerning findings of postprandial hypoglycaemia in starvation was equally a problem in atypical anorexia. Here is a link to our groups research also: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/29969316/

21.01.2022 Eating disorders don’t just affect the individual - they severely impact carers and families too.

20.01.2022 Great news for patients!

16.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW 1 IN 3 PEOPLE HAVE HAD TO GO INTO DEBT TO TREAT THEIR EATING DISORDER? Today we launch our MAYDAYS for Eating Disorders campaign. This year, Bu...tterfly conducted a consultative survey asking Australians to share their experiences on the cost of treating eating disorders, and the results were ALARMING! We are asking all Australians to help us raise the alarm on the crippling cost of eating disorders this MAY. 15.01.2022 Saying that youve recovered from an eating disorder and now you eat clean and stay away from processed foods-is like saying you are sober from alcoholism-ye...t maintain a healthy relationship to alcohol by sticking to wine and beer. While clean eating may be socially sanctioned-its incredibly dangerous for those in eating disorder recovery (and largely unhelpful to the population in general. See more

13.01.2022 So great to have self-compassion addressed at the ANZAED conference, and a workshop for carers.

13.01.2022 This is a good practical piece on how trauma can impact the body. It provides some practical suggestions, such as using the Headspace App, or connecting with others and telling the story, as helpful parts of recovery. https://www.teenvogue.com/sto/how-trauma-impacts-your-body

13.01.2022 A really interesting new diagnostic idea to watch...

13.01.2022 ANZAED members Jo Doley and Susan Paxton (Secretary of the ANZAED Executive Committee) from La Trobe University in Melbourne have written a powerful article for... The Conversation in response to the recent release on Netflix of the movie To The Bone. The article prompts us all to think about whether a film of this nature helps to create awareness about eating disorders, or does harm to those who are most vulnerable? We are also pleased to announce that Jo, Susan, and their colleagues from The Butterfly Foundation and La Trobe University will be presenting on "Talking about eating disorders in community presentations" on the first day of this year's annual ANZAED conference in Sydney. The workshop will explore how people can design and deliver effective presentations to the community about eating disorders, without unintentionally causing harm. To find out more, visit: conference.2017.anzaed.org.au ANZAED recognizes and appreciates the tireless work of its members in continuing to work to promote awareness of and reduce stigma around eating disorders in the community across Australia and New Zealand, and around the world. http://theconversation.com/to-the-bone-creating-eating-diso

09.01.2022 What a fantastic end to 2018 and start to 2019 - our paper on appetite disturbance, gut symptoms and anxiety in anorexia nervosa is published! 06.01.2022 'Woefully inadequate': Calls for Government to fully fund treatment of eating disorders through Medicare. More tonight on 7.30.

06.01.2022 Medicare funding for eating disorder services barely covers the start of psychological sessions, let alone funding for dietetic support. Lets hope the government can find a solution to better support consumers and their families. https://www.smh.com.au//great-sense-of-guilt-crippling-cos

05.01.2022 What we say in front of our kids about weight, shape, appearance and food changes the way kids see themselves and their relationship with their bodies.

05.01.2022 From tomorrow, care for those with an eating disorder is undergoing a massive reform - 40 psychological sessions and 20 dietetic sessions per year for those with a severe and complex eating disorder. Huge praise to the federal government for committing to this ground-breaking MBS initiative.

05.01.2022 I feel very privileged and proud to have worked with such an incredible group of professionals to get these new, first-of-their-kind clinical practice standards for eating disorder treatment published. And thank you so much to ANZAED for supporting this hugely important project.

05.01.2022 Ground-breaking news for every Australian affected by eating disorders! The federal government has just announced $111 million in Medicare funds to support those with an eating disorder, allowing access for up to 40 psychotherapy sessions and 20 dietetic sessions per year. I am so proud, excited and grateful to have played a small part in this huge collaborative effort as the President of the Australia & New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders. Personally, achieving increased financial support for patients with an eating disorder to access dietetic support has been a long-standing passion of mine, and together with the increased psychotherapeutic support, it will make an incredible difference to the lives of so many suffering with these debilitating conditions.
