25.01.2022 I was reading this wonderful book today to a group of students at Kilberry Valley school. I asked for a volunteer to come out the front to be a living easel and hold Ann James’s original artwork so the group could compare the original preliminary illustration with the published piece in the book. I asked the girl what her name was, and would you believe it... her name -MIRACLE!!

24.01.2022 Every time I take this amazing piece of artwork from B is for Bravo by Kevin Burgemeestre to a school, the kids crowd around. Today was no different. There was almost fisticuffs as they tried to push each other out of the way for a better look. The conversations they have with each other are rich and interesting. One boy today could not bring himself to move away from F is for Foxtrot and Flying Doctor. Was not interested in looking at any of the other illustrations. At all! His teacher was actually impressed. She’d never seen him concentrate on anything for so long. A fitting day for Kevin’s work to be so loved.

24.01.2022 BookWeek is my favourite time of the year. It’s been a blast already. I flew to Brisbane for the announcements of the awards, met some really talented creators. Back in my hood today and what do you know? Idan was at the Beaumaris Library giving a talk about his book. The winner of the Eve Pownall award for 2018. Here he is with Heather Zubek one of the judges for that category. Holding his rather glorious gold medal.

23.01.2022 Seven Stories. A Children’s Literature Centre in Newcastle on Tyne in the U.K. I’ve wanted to go there for years and am so happy that I finally made it. Seven Stories is devoted to promoting and highlighting children’s books and their creators.Galleries showcasing the original artwork from picture books, dedicated spaces for hands on art making and writing. Storytime areas, dress up areas, everything to give children a fantastic experience. So much to show, but here are some photos to give you a taste.

22.01.2022 I’ve just travelled back from being a part of the Prom Festival. Sunday was a Children’s Literature Festival, a first. It was SO good. Excellent activities, author and illustrator talks, the launch of Michelle Scully’s CD of Alison Lester songs. It’s inspiring and affirming to witness the love of story that was in the town of Fish Creek this weekend. Workshops with the Fish Creek Primary School students today were just fabulous.

20.01.2022 Grade 1/2 students could not believe the illustrations from I’m a Hungry Dinosaur ( Janeen Brian and Ann James) was Illustrated with rainbow pencil and CHOCOLATE icing. They were all going home to give it a go.

19.01.2022 This is the newest addition to my Collection.I just LOVE this illustration from the Bonnie and Sam series written by Alison Lester. It is a treat to have the published illustration next to the preliminary artwork, showing how illustrators come to decisions on their finished work.

17.01.2022 Fantastic interview on ABC right now! With Andrew Joyner who has just illustrated a Dr Suess text that was discovered in a cupboard by his wife in 2012. Of all the illustrators all of the world Andes Joyner from Australia was chosen to illustrate it. it looks fabulous.Going out to get me a copy right now.

15.01.2022 All ready for Day 5 of BookWeek at Bayside Library’s Beaumaris branch. Students from Beaumaris P.S. were such a delight. They asked really interesting questions, were excellent art detectives and were fascinated to see the original artwork from some of their favourite books. The Grade 5/6 classes enjoyed the art trail questions. One budding businessman wanted to know how much insurance I pay each year! Another one wanted a run down on all purchase prices of the artwork. I e...xplain during the workshops that I’m not an author or an illustrator but a collector of original illustrations from picture books. Next question was But if you were an author what would you write about? We discussed the CBCA BookWeek Awards and I loved listening to their choices of what should be the winners. Another question was Where do you keep all this artwork?and Which is your favourite? The enthusiasm was high. There was a lot of booklove in the room. See more

15.01.2022 Final day of workshops for this BookWeek.Lovely to see the Year 7 boys engaged in picture books. They loved Banjo Bounces Back by Lachie Hume. And got right into the art trail questions.

15.01.2022 My favourite week of the year is about to begin. Packed and ready to go.Looking forward to sharing the love. Much more efficient than I used to be! HAPPY BOOK WEEK to everyone. Celebrate all the fabulous books that are highlighted by the CBCA Awards and the fabulous books that for whatever reason aren’t on public lists but might be a winner to you.

15.01.2022 I was given this beautiful original illustration some time ago. I had no idea what book it was from. I decided to take it out of its frame recently and was delighted to see scrawled and quite faint, the words Barnaby and the Horses. I searched and found there was a book of that title by Lydia Pender and illustrated by Inga Moore.I ordered it from a vintage bookshop in America and it arrived today. I’m SO delighted to have this treasure and to have solved the mystery. And the book, published by Oxford University Press is a first edition.

14.01.2022 BookWeek .. Yinnar P.S. you were fantastic. What a day of celebrating books.

13.01.2022 Lovely to meet Tai Snaith today at the Zart Art Nurturing Creativity Conference. This is her new book. It’s fabulous. Really enjoyed the mixed collage artwork. Each page suggests a situation that readers might find themselves in, both real and imaginary. Then readers ask themselves what they they could do in that situation. Really interesting, thought provoking discussion starter. And what a ‘pick me up and read me’ cover!

12.01.2022 And ready, set,go for another day of extended BookWeek workshops.Langwarrin today. Lovely school, lovely students and an enjoyable day had by all.

11.01.2022 Highly recommend this album of Alison Lester books set to music. Launched yesterday at the Alison Lester Gallery in Fish Creek. I’ve been singing The Very Noisy Baby ever since.

10.01.2022 I’m just so excited to be the proud owner of this beautiful artwork by Robert Ingpen from The Drover’s Boy, written by Ted Egan. ( it’s a song) I’ve loved this book for many years and to have an illustration is a dream come true.

08.01.2022 Shake a Leg by Boori Monty Pryor, Illustrated by Jan Ormerod. Students loved looking at this illustration at today’s workshops. If you haven’t seen Wrong Kind Of Black which was on the ABC last night then check it out on iview. It’s an amazing piece of storytelling about Boori and his family and the importance of storytelling. I laughed, cried and thought about it all day.

07.01.2022 Always high interest in this piece of artwork by Kevin Burgemeestre. Kids flock to it. Engrossed totally by what they see. I love listening to what the say about it. The discussions about how it was created, what might have happened. Pure magic.

07.01.2022 Kids love art. Kids love books. Kids love art from books. I really love watching them read to each other, point out interesting things about the artwork and be in the moment. Happy days

04.01.2022 I was given this original illustration some time ago, and had no idea what book it was from. I recently decided to take it out of its frame. I was delighted to be able to decipher the words Barnaby and the Horses on the back. I searched and found the book in a vintage bookshop in America. Written by Lydia Pender and Illustrated by Inga Moore and published by Oxford University Press in 1980.SO thrilled to have this illustration and a first edition book to boot.

03.01.2022 I LOVE Christmas books. There is something magical about books that are about the time of year children are so excited about. This is the only book I still have from my early childhood. Sent to my sister Linda and myself from our Aunty Marg who lived in England. We’d never seen a pop up book before and thought it was amazing. I still have that feeling every year when I open it up and it takes pride of place on the bookshelf. What are your favourite Christmas books?

03.01.2022 It was such a pleasure and so much fun to be a presenter at the Ocean Day celebrations on the Mid North Coast on Friday. To read Mark Wilson’s book on the beach and make sand sculptures with the students was just amazing. Let’s all get out of the classrooms! As well as celebrating the Oceans of the world there was a big focus on preventing plastic pollution. There were 21 different activities and over 800 students from 12 schools. Congratulations to all the organisers, especially to Scott’s Head Public School for hosting the event.n
