25.01.2022 IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM QTAC: Overnight QTAC conducted internal testing of our ATAR processes ahead of the statewide release on Saturday 19 December. Regretfully..., testing of the release information rolled out into our live production space which issued ATAR notifications to 24 000 Queensland Year 12 students. As there is no data currently in the system, students may have received a notification that they are ATAR ineligible. QTAC CEO Dr John Griffiths says QTAC acknowledges this technical error and deeply apologises to our Year 12 cohort, this has no doubt caused additional anxiety during what has already been a trying year for our school community. Dr Griffiths added, We receive the Year 12 result file from the QCAA on Monday, which is when the actual calculation of the Queensland ATAR begins, we are on track for official release on Saturday 19 December Below is the timeline of events for the next seven days. QTAC ATAR Release Monday 14 December QTAC receives the Year 12 result file from QCAA Tuesday 15 December QTAC performs inter-subject scaling process Wednesday 16 December QTAC checks and validates data Thursday 17 December QTAC calculates the ATAR Friday 18 December QTAC loads the ATAR into the Portal Saturday 19 December ATAR Release An email communicating the above will be sent to those directly affected. https://www.qtac.edu.au//up/2020/12/ATAR-Testing-Error.pdf

20.01.2022 Year 7 Science Prac guided by Yr 11 Chemistry students. Yesterday, Yr 7 Science class completed their practical that involved extracting limonene which is an oil produced from oranges peels. Students use distillation for this process and the Yr 11 Chemistry students gave each group a helping hand. Meanwhile, other groups made soap with the help of the Yr 11s and some were able to use a drop of the citrus oil to scent the soap.... The double lesson finished with a bang when Mr Cianciullo entertained the Yr 7s with a controlled explosion of ethanol particles inside a container. It certainly looked dramatic inside a darkened laboratory. Terrific afternoon and thanks to the Yr 11 Chemistry students.

02.01.2022 The YR 11 Agricultural Practices Unit: Plant Production. Gilroy Santa Maria would like to take this opportunity to thank all farmers involved and HCPSL for giving up their time and sharing their knowledge with the staff and students, we wouldnt be able to do this subject without their support. During the term the students have had Richard Hobbs from HCPSL come to Gilroy and discuss the whats involved in farming sugar cane and the different stages of farming throughout the y...ear. Students also went out on an excursion to Mr Lynns farm along with Megan from HCPSL to lean about the importance of soil health and gain some more insight into farming sugar cane. Students were fortunate enough to then go out to one of Reinaudos farm and each get to experience been inside a Harvester, Haulout and Billet Planter and gain an understanding of the process of planting and cutting cane. Our final part of the unit was to look at small crops such as pumpkins and once again students went out on site to Di Bellas farm this time and spent time learning about the process of growing pumpkins and sweet potatoes and learning about the machinery involved. All students have had nothing but positive feedback about the subject and have really enjoyed the hands on aspect of Agricultural Practices.
