25.01.2022 I always knew he was a sensible chap!

25.01.2022 If anyone is considering entering, even only if you're just a possible, can you drop me a message. I just want to make sure that accomodation numbers match riders. Thanks Chris

25.01.2022 All 6 riders will be setting off tonight to head for Hobart. Hopefully the weather is kind, they deserve some luck in that department!

25.01.2022 In the last two weeks we've had lots of interest in the page. I'm really curious as to why? Has it been in the news or something? Oh and for the true masochists out there, ... who fancies doing this as an "unsupported" ride.? Think of it as a IPWR or TCR style ultralight set up, but with lots of trees, hills and maybe a drop or two of rain/hail/snow/etc. Anyone interested?

24.01.2022 There are just 7 Spots still available for the 2017 Giro Tasmania. Jump on board before they go.

23.01.2022 So this time tomorrow you'll be heading out of town on the cycle way towards Brighton. And in (hopefully less than) 75 hours you'll be back having covered a 1,010km lap of Tasmania. Sleep tight, you will need it.

23.01.2022 Just emailed out the following to all riders (not sure if the links are going to work on Facebook but here goes... Good Morning everyone, Last night we had our planning session for this years Giro Tasmania and I thought Id better update you on some things that came up:...Continue reading

22.01.2022 With less than 6 weeks to go we have only 5 spots left! Hopefully everyone is getting their training in, or carbo loading (sitting on the sofa drinking beer and eating mince pies).

22.01.2022 Apologies for lack of update. 6 riders left Hobart at 8pm heading for Raspins Beach near Orford 95km, by 1am they passed through heading off into the dark along Tasmania's East Coast. 195km saw the six riders pass through Bicheno in ever worsening conditions, rain started off gentle but the took on biblical proportions. Headwinds and fatigue after no sleep just added to the "fun". By St Helens the torrential rain was running in sheets off the road. T.B. sensibly pulled the pi...n due to hypothermia, he was soaked from head to toe and couldn't stop shaking! The Weldborough Pass was a fantastic climb as conditions settled down to drivingrain and the occasional howling gale (headwind of course). Warm drinks and pasta refuelling and it was off to face the challenge of The Sidlings, this b%#*{d of a climb is challenging but spectacular in good weather, in bad weather it compounded the exhaustion, downhills were strewn with debris from wind ravage teees, flats were just open ground for headwinds to sap energy. By Launceston N. decided that to press on would mean one hour's sleep before starting the climbing fest that is Day Two, way too dangerous and so became our second DNF. Start ofday three and J. Decided to withdraw, exhausted, it would be just too much to continue. Day 2 started cold, for S. it was just too cold, uncontrollably shaking he pulled the pin in Sheffield, the early signs of hypothermia giving a clear warning that his decision was a wise one. Meanwhile M. Had decided to take his time, enjoy the scenery smell the flowers and enjoy a more lesurely paced ride (if anyone knows M you'll realise that everything is relative). Which leaves 1 rider, TJ has tried the Giro once before, this time he is determined to succeed. Tired, wet and cold he reached the 600km Murchison Highway Checkpoint (Cradle Mountain), a sensible prison might have headed to the pub, T decided to dig deep and keep going. Amazingly he has just arrived in Strahan, very very tired but with "only" 300km to go.

21.01.2022 Just puting the final touches to the Giro registration system. There will be only 12 spots for this iconic ride so once registrations are open you'll need to be quick.

19.01.2022 2 anecdotes from the weekend: 1. One of our Mainland riders was cycling through the hills near Queenstown in the dead of Saturday night/Sunday morning. The police were curious as to why this madman was on the lose. "What the hell are you up to?" was their question "Cycling to Hobart" came the obvious reply. Policemen head off towards Queenstown happy that their curiosity had been assuaged. The rider eventually makes it to Queenstown to find the place closed, the only place o...pen at 3am was the local public loos, so off he gets to fill his water bottles. Next thing the two policemen were back with him (police station right next to loos) clutching handfuls of chocolates for him. Seeing as nowhere was open for nearly another 100km they were a life saver. 2. One of our volunteers, 9 year old Hamish, lost his ipad at the weekend, it possible dropped out of the support car in the deluge that hit St Helens as we passed through or it was buried in the car under swags, food, empty Tim tam wrappers etc. Mid afternoon I get a call from Jenny (Hamish's mum) "Why do St Helen's police have Hamish's iPad?". Not only had some honest soul handed it in, but the police had done some amazing sleuthing to find out who owned it (this included cross referencing burglary reports from 16 years ago, white pages, and about a dozen other sources). To top it all the policeman who rang was heading down to Hobart "Do you want me to drop it off for you?"

18.01.2022 Andrew Heard has some photos of the ride , hopefully the link will work: https://goo.gl/photos/DmehZiXJzwDMuBT97

17.01.2022 Andrew Heard has been mining through the history of The Giro and has come up with a definitive list of finishers, out of 46 starters we have had 46 starters, 20 finishers Only 17 different riders have finished 4 Riders have completed it more than once:... 17.01.2022 It was great to meet so many riders on yesterday's ASH Dash. I spoke to a fair few about the Giro, maybe trying to convince them to participate could have waited until they stopped hyperventilating after the climb up Woodbridge Hill.

16.01.2022 2 more sleeps.... My workshop is now so full of "stuff" i can barely open to door. The Kitchen table is full of Spot Trackers. There's and enormous pumpkin waiting to get roasted and turned into soup for first lunch on Friday morning. Riders: PLEASE Don't forget to make sure that ... 1. Your lights and clothing comply with requirements. 2. Drop bag is labelled and well packed. 3. If using one, that you've downloaded the route onto your GPS. See more

16.01.2022 Here's a link to the route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/16612396

14.01.2022 Looks like tomorrow (9th October) we finally open registrations! Only 12 places are available, so be very quick. Please read the Terms and Conditions VERY carefully, ... basically the important bits (I think anyway) are: Qualifying rides: A 600km or greater ride in either 2015-16 or 2016-17 Audax season. Other qualifying rides may be accepted at the discretion of the Event Organiser. It is a condition of entry that riders carry the following mandatory equipment: - Long sleeved raincoat. - Long sleeved top and legs - Long fingered gloves. - Emergency survival Space blanket/bag It is REALLY recommended that you carry some sort of tracking device, we're hoping to hire some spot trackers from National Audax. Let us know if you'd like one.

12.01.2022 Your loved ones (and a ride organiser) may want to keep track of you. We highly recommend some sort of tracking as there are long exposed stretches with little traffic. https://www.facebook.com//a.125450540931/834111270065001/

11.01.2022 Good afternoon, everyone, 6 hours to go! If you are dot watching there are two websites where you can do it: http://share.findmespot.com/shared/faces/viewspots.jsp... Or https://spotwalla.com/locationViewer.php?id=402 Happy watching Chris

11.01.2022 The less glamorous side of Audax, sitting outside the public loos in Bicheno at 2am awaiting the riders getting close enough for me to fire up bacon and egg rolls. They are well spread out by now, but all making good progress despite the wind and impending rain.

11.01.2022 The next edition of Checkpoint...

10.01.2022 Simon done. Nathan due in in less than an hour. Tony and Miles are all past Ouse Tim passed through Hamilton

09.01.2022 For those of you vicariously riding the route by following the spot tracker feed, here's the Thank you Pete Heal, Andrew Heard and the rest of the Audax Australia team for getting this up and running.

09.01.2022 Tracking: I've ordered an Audax Australia spot tracker for each rider (included in ride fee) which will hopefully update friends and family of your progress through a dedicated tracking page. So they can watch you suffer your way around.

09.01.2022 Planning ahead for 2019? Well the next Giro is only seven hundred odd days away. How do you amass the brownie points with your Significant Other to get to do a ride like the Giro? Easy, sit him/her down and show them this, ... suggest a wee post ride holiday. It's only one way, but there are just as many things on the West and Northern coast, D'Anvers Fudge, Cradle Mountain Lodge, wilderness railway, Cruises, etc. spring to mind. https://www.jamesboag.com.au/driving-tasmania-one-island-/

09.01.2022 One month to go Here's a weather report from TODAY in the highlands. https://www.facebook.com/AdventureBeforeAvarice/videos/1163764833721218/

08.01.2022 Job done! Congratulations to all the riders. Thank you Andrew, Craig and Hamish who were a great volunteer team.

07.01.2022 Registrations are now open. https://www.audax.org.au//event/tas/211-giro-tasmania-2017 Only 11 spots left!... Don't forget that you must have ridden a ride of at least 600km in the 2015/16 or 2016/17 seasons.

07.01.2022 Latest weather forecast, pack your raincoat.

07.01.2022 For participating riders, a reminder of why there is a list of (minimum) required clothing. https://www.facebook.com/greatlakehotel.com.au/videos/1276760932366998/

05.01.2022 6 places booked so only 6 spots left! What a great way to start the new year, 1,000km of stunning scenery!

02.01.2022 There appears to be a number of Ride with GPS maps out there. Andrew Heard has assembled this one for us to use, lots of information on it. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/16612396,

01.01.2022 Update: After the flood and hills, the sun is shining and the ( at times ) tailwind is blowing. Simon is nearing the finish after cycling all night in conditions ranging from near freezing to 25 C. Nathan is an hour south of Ouse, going strong and hopefully taking advantage of the warm tail wind. Tim and Tony are just cresting the top of the Tarreleah climb with about an hour and a half to two hours to Ouse.... Miles set off at 7 am, but seems to be sailing through the very lumpy sections between Queenstown and Dewent Bridge. His average was impressive at 25kmph whilst doing some serious climbing. See more

01.01.2022 That's the overnight accomodation booked in Strahan and Deloraine with an extra snooze stop available at the Welborough Pub! Now to organise the food and equipment.

01.01.2022 Out of 6 starters only Tim Jones remains on track to complete the 1,010km in 75 hours. Deluges of rain, headwinds like you would never believe and minimal sleep and still he goes. Hopefully it's second time lucky for Tim. Other riders have withdrawn due to exhaustion, hypothermia and it being " a stupid idea in the first place" .
