03.01.2022 Airport slammed for delay in landing system Lucy Ardern | 12:01am May 23, 2013 GOLD Coast Airport has been blamed for holding back construction of an instrument landing system, needed to reduce frequent flight delays and cancellations at Coolangatta.... Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Anthony Albanese this week said the Federal Government had already committed the necessary funding for the ILS. ''It is up to Gold Coast Airport now,'' he said. Mr Albanese's comments were yesterday backed up by air navigation provider Air Services Australia, which is ultimately responsible for delivering the safety system. ''Airservices has budgeted for the ILS and will install the ILS once Gold Coast Airport determines which end of the runway (it) should be installed, and receives all the appropriate approvals,'' an Air Services Australia spokesman said. The Bulletin understands Air Services Australia and Gold Coast Airport will meet today to discuss the the ILS. Depending on how things go, the ILS could be operational within weeks, allowing pilots to land aircraft in wet conditions and low visibility. Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate yesterday said it was time for the blame game to stop and for the ILS to be put in place. ''This is a must-do for the Gold Coast,'' he said. ''We are doing a lot of work to encourage tourism and to attract fly-in, fly-out business to the city. ''But all of that is put at risk by the lack of an ILS. ''We need to stop the buck passing on this and get it going.'' The Southern Gold Coast Chamber of Commerce president Gail O'Neil, whose husband is an air traffic controller, said the lack of an ILS affected tourism numbers and ''gave the city a bad name''. ''We all know these things take time,'' she said. ''But they need to get a move on with the ILS and get it in as soon as possible. ''We are a tourism city and we need to get more flights into the Gold Coast on time.'' Gold Coast Airport boss Paul Donovan declined to comment on the issue.
