23.01.2022 More than 1000 local native seedlings were planted today at JAKEM Farm thanks to our Communities Environment Program grant via Rebekha Sharkie MPThis project is planting more than 200 of the Nationally vulnerable Silver daisy bush (Olearia pannosa ssp pannosa) to add to more than 300 already planted on the site. Other rare and threatened plants added to the more advanced revegetation across the site includes 100 Calocephalus citreus (Lemon Beauty Heads) and 100 Swainsona lessertifolia (Coast Swainson Pea). Thankyou so much to all the 50 or so fabulous volunteers that helped and to Rebekha for taking the time out of her busy schedule to come and plant some seedlings and say hello.

23.01.2022 Happy NAIDOC Week. We offer our deep respects to the Traditional Owners of all of the lands on which we live and work. At GWLAP we do our best to restore, preserve and care for this country that First Nations people have been spiritually and culturally connected to for over 65,000 years. #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe... https://www.naidoc.org.au/about/naidoc-week

One of the participants of the Program also spoke on how their contribution to returning low flows is benefiting the wider catchment and helping the environment. If you missed the segment and wish to hear it, it is located via this link at the end of the show @ 45.00 min. https://www.abc.net.au//sa-countr/sa-country-hour/12520500

19.01.2022 This looks like a great opportunity

19.01.2022 More than 200 seedlings of the rare Banksia marginata were recently planted and guarded at a rare patch of woodland near Rockleigh via the help of a small group of eager volunteers and GWLAP staff. These carefully planted seedlings will contribute to seeing another generation of Banksia trees continuing on this site. Sadly, a number of recent very dry years appear to have killed numerous large Banksia. It was great to have help from interested volunteers (on what is Nation...al Volunteers Week) including staff from the Adelaide Botanic Garden Seed Conservation Centre and conservationist Kieren Brewer; who amazingly has undertaken plantings of Banksia marginata on this same reserve for more than 20 years to assure the survival of this plant community. The site also supports huge old Eucalyptus camaldulensis (Red Gum), rare plants and the vulnerable Diamond firetail finch, which were noted yesterday when on location. In addition, more than 40 rare Olearia passerinoides ssp glutescens were grown from seed kindly provided to the GWLAP by the Adelaide Botanic Garden Seed Conservation Centre and planted on the site, bolstering rare remaining populations of this plant in the area. This project is undertaking significant environmental works on several sites to help offset the approved clearance of Red gums which were removed as part of the Bald Hills Road interchange, Mount Barker. Funding is being provided via a grant from the Native Vegetation Council. Thanks to all who have made this happen.

16.01.2022 Endangered River Blackfish Future sustained by Low Flows. An article in the Courier last week highlighted the need to retain healthy water patterns in the catchments of the Eastern Mount Lofty Ranges and how the Flows for the Future Program is assisting in restoring low flows back into the environment. In doing so, endangered fish populations, such as the River blackfish are provided with low flows to help in sustaining their population within the system.

15.01.2022 We are excited to see some of the healthy Vallisneria australis (Ribbon-weed) that we have been growing for the past 9 months at the Alexandrina Community Nursery finally head out into the field recently. This aquatic plants trial funded and coordinated by the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board is a collaborative project to establish this native Ribbon-weed in jute matting for easy planting, transport and placement into freshwater aquatic surrogate sites for a range ...of threatened native fish species to utilise. In two pictures below, students at the Urrbrae wetland are installing the first established mats under the expert guidance of Sylvia from Aquasave Nature Glenelg Trust to provide potential refuge areas for the critically endangered Purple-spotted Gudgeons released (as Pictured) in the site and grown via their vital breeding program. Other Vallisneria mats were heading off today to a refuge dam at Mosquito Hill for Yarra Pygmy Perch. We have really enjoyed growing these interesting plants; which have certainly been a conversation starter between Ben and the many curious nursery customers that come through our gate, with at least 50 people learning about this plant. Thanks to Kate, Sam, Corey, Sylvia, Will and the works crew and everyone else who has contributed to this great project thus far and for involving us in the project, we have learnt a lot.

14.01.2022 More than 20 attendees came along to our `Fowl Mouth' talk last week at the Callington Hall to listen to our speaker topics about Mallee Fowl at Monarto, Threatened flora and plant communities and rabbit and fox control approaches. It was also great to hear about some of the impressive conservation efforts occurring in the wider Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board region involving the management of very large areas of habitat for improved biodiversity outcomes in the u...pper Riverland area. We were delighted to be able to meet several landholders in the area who are doing their bit for biodiversity and we received several expressions of interest for undertaking on-ground works in the future. GWLAP learnt new info about the local area, received some great suggestions for future talks and got positive feedback on the talk sessions overall. Many thanks to our guest speakers and attendees for their time and input provided. This project is supported by the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board through funding from the landscape levies. Thankyou!

14.01.2022 Great to see local native plants from our nursery going into such a great project.

13.01.2022 Ta-da! We have a new Covid safe kitchen at the Strathalbyn Natural Resource Centre. Our old (slightly rotting) cabinets have been replaced by this shiny new easy-clean version. It even has a dishwasher to help us tidy up after events in super-quick time! Special thanks to Alexandrina Council and Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board for the financial support for this upgrade. Thanks also to Ross Oke for playing handyman and installing it for us. We are very grateful!

11.01.2022 Congratulations to Clayton Bay Nursery and Environment Group for tackling woody weeds in the Clayton Bay area.

11.01.2022 Great to see the next generation of trees, shrubs, grasses and herbs being planted across Wyndam Farm thanks to funding from Native Vegetation Council Significant Environmental benefit grants. More than 10,000 local provenance seedlings are being planted within areas inhabited by some very old Eucalyptus camaldulensis (Red gum) with some estimated to be more than 400 years old. Sad to see some of these completely killed ( landholder estimates 80 very large red gums gone & 60+ badly damaged over 200 hectares) by the Cuddle Creek bushfires, but heartening to see some natural regeneration including an estimated 400 new Red gums. This project is offsetting the removal of red gums which occurred as part of the Bald Hills Road interchange, Mount Barker, SA.

11.01.2022 They may be brightly coloured and easy to care for, but the truth about Gazanias is that they’re one of the most prolific, invasive coastal weeds in this region.... That’s why we’ve been working with local government and community groups to spread the word about the importance of removing Gazania species from coastal dunes AND home gardens. The Gazania Free Gardens project motivated people in the Alexandrina Council area to remove this declared plant, by educating them on its invasiveness. Take a look at more of the great work achieved in 2018-19 thanks to all our volunteers, partners and staff: http://tiny.cc/2018-19-achieve. 07.01.2022 Helping Wyndam Farm Recover from Fire 220 hectares of Wyndam Farm was burnt right through from boundary to boundary. Large ancient red gum have been decimated by the recent fires in the area, losing hollows and reducing canopy stepping stones for wildlife such as the declining woodland birds of the Eastern Hills. Revegetation works had already been planned for this property prior to the 2019 Cuddle Creek Bushfires to add creek-line diversity and block revegetation. Bremer Bar...ker Catchment Group and Goolwa to Wellington LAP (GWLAP) works undertaken in the early 2000 and again in 2014 were completely burnt out, with fences destroyed and ground-layer and soils exposed. One positive note from a recent visit was the significant germination of wattles occurring in areas of old burnt revegetation thanks to whatever soil seed bank had built up over the 10 or more years this revegetation had been producing seed. This project grant has allowed for the planting, guarding and maintenance of more than 2000 local native seedlings within 1.5 hectares of the Davidson Creek. This revegetation links to another 5 hectares of other revegetation being undertaken on the property for 2020 through other complimentary funding. The Alexandrina Community Nursery (managed by the GWLAP) grew more than 2000 local provenance seedlings at the nursery at Goolwa with the help of more than 10 volunteers. Some of the seedlings planted were also propagated with the kind assistance of various agencies including staff from the Flows for the Future Program and the staff from the Strathalbyn Natural Resources Centre. The seedlings were planted this June and July 2020. Revegetation has involved the planting of local trees grown from provenance seed including old man Banksia (Banksia marginata), Blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon), Drooping She-oak (Allocasuarina verticillata) and blue-gum (Eucalyptus leucoxylon). A suite of native grasses, sedges and herbs including the rare Lemon scented grass (Cymbopogon ambiguus), sedges, rushes and shrubs were also planted to improve biodiversity, reduce erosion in the watercourse and provide refuge for wildlife including reptiles and amphibians. Thanks Landcare Australia and all the generous donors of this funding; it will continue to make a lasting impact on this site for the wildlife and for the still devastated landowner. See more

07.01.2022 Congratulations to the Flows for the Future team, including our very own Leah and Alyssa :) They have been recognised at the Australian Water Association Awards, taking home the prestigious Program Innovation Award! 05.01.2022 It is always good to go back to sites we have undertaken revegetation on with local landholders. Check out these before and after shots! These sites pictured are at Langhorne Creek and involved a multi-pronged approach using machine direct seeding (undertaken with the farmer and GWLAP personnel) and the planting of seedlings of canopy species according to the target plant community determined for the site. Sandy rises prone to erosion and offering relatively minor returns wer...e easier for this gentleman to re-vegetate; plus he wanted to support the local bird life and buffer existing habitat. Local seed from Langhorne Creek remnants were collected, and species not as reliable for germination via direct seeding were also grown as seedlings and planted either side of direct seeding furrows including Callitris gracilis, Daevesia benthamii ssp. humilis, Babingtonia behrii, Leptospermum coriaceum and a number of cutting grown species. This work was funded way back in 2012 by the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board (formerly Natural Resources SA Murray Darling Basin) as part of dedicated biodiversity improvement funding and it's great to see the lasting outcomes for this funding, wildlife and the very happy farming family.

03.01.2022 Was terrific to host TAFE Conservation and Land Management students today to help provide some revegetation experience at Goolwa. Was interesting to unearth another three lined legless lizard also, which nobody had seen before. Thanks for your help all

03.01.2022 Our volunteers at the Alexandrina Community Nursery deserve a shout-out today! This hard-core bunch have demonstrated their commitment by soldiering through the cold, wind and rain today. We couldn't do without them x The nursery on Kessell Road at Goolwa is open today until 4pm. There are lots of lovely species in stock and they will be looking very fresh after this rain!

01.01.2022 Seed collection in the Bull Creek Range has been in full swing over the last few months, thanks to Grassroots Grants funding from the Hills and Fleurieu Landscapes Board (@HFLandscapeSA) and support from the Goolwa to Wellington LAP. Members of the Prospect Hill Bushland Group (PHBG) have been working closely with experts to create insurance seed banks of rare or declining species. These precious seeds may one day help prevent local extinction caused by catastrophic fires and... climate change. Through a number of site visits and workshops led by Dan Duval from the Seed Conservation Centre and Ben Simon from GWLAP, the group learnt how to identify, collect seeds and propagate some of the region’s most threatened plants, including the nationally endangered Clover Glycine, and several species of rare orchids. Under the guidance of Phil Druce from Blackwood Seeds, local landholders have spent many hours learning how to identify, collect and prepare seeds from a wide range of understorey species, providing a valuable resource for future propagation projects aimed at bolstering existing populations. For more details, check out the group’s Instagram Page (@prospecthillbushlandgrp) Instagram Page or contact them on their website (prospecthillbushlandgroup.org). This project is supported by the Hills and Fleurieu Landscape Board’s Grassroots Grants Program, and is funded by the landscape levy.

01.01.2022 GWLAP's Alexandrina Community Nursery is currently open every Friday from 9 A.M. to 4 P.M. on Kessel Road, Goolwa (Next to the Alexandrina Council works depot) and stocks more than 160 local native plant species suitable for coastal gardens to high rainfall areas of the hills (e.g. Kuitpo) all grown by our nursery manager Ben, with a dedicated group of volunteers. We still have thousands of plants in stock. Prices start from $1 and nothing is over $2.50 and comes coupled with advice from Ben to help plan your project.

01.01.2022 We still have a few places available for our Rabbit Control Workshop next week. Rob Murphy from Hills and Fleurieu Landscape Board will be sharing his knowledge on a range of techniques and will answer questions about what might work best for your situation.
