We have introduced strict infection control measures to ensure safety for everyone, to ensure that we can continue to give your pet the best possible care. We encourage our clients not to miss regularly scheduled check-up and medical appointments. But we will be modifying our workflow to meet public health and safety guidelines. So stay tuned for updates. 1. All staff have been briefed on biosecurity protocols and rigorous handwashing and use of latex gloves is in full effect. 2. All staff will do their best to maintain a 2m distance from clients when communicating. 3. Any staff member ill or otherwise in need of self isolation will not be coming to work. 4. We are working to keep the waiting room as clear as possible and those who would like to wait outside or in their car are welcome to do so. 5. If you have a pet emergency during this time but are unwell, please call us on 4164 2010 to discuss the best way for us to ensure your pet receives the best care available. See more

17.01.2022 Yes it’s SNAKE SEASON! Over the past few weeks we have had an unusually high number of pets with snake bites. Please make sure you take precautions and seek help immediately if your dog or cat is showing signs.... These sign or symptoms can be quite variable ranging from a complete collapse thru generalised weakness and even showing spasms. Bleeding episodes may even be seen with envenomation. Snakes are attracted to potential food and water sources and safe, quiet places to hide. To reduce the risk of snakes finding your backyard or property attractive, keep your grass mown, clear up any rubbish piles and clear away objects where snakes can hide. Unwanted materials, especially timber and iron, which retain the heat, will attract snakes. Make sure that stockfeed is stored securely so that snakes are not attracted by mice. If you are walking your dog close to bushland, especially near water during the summer months, please keep your dog on a lead and avoid long grassy areas.

14.01.2022 Yesterday we farewelled our vet nurse Fiona as she embarks on a new adventure. Fiona will be buckling down for the next 5 years studying a Bachelor of Veterinary Science. Fiona was an integral part of our team and worked with us for close to 4 years. Her happy can-do attitude will be missed greatly! The clinics will certainly be much quieter without her bubbly presence but we are already calling dibs on having her back to work with us in the future. 08.01.2022 We're so excited to announce that our evening activities and some camping will return this year! Due to the Queensland Government's recent Covid-19 upda...te for outdoor events, the Burrandowan Picnic Races Committee can confirm the following will now be on! Local band, RYZA, will perform live on stage Dinner at the Pits will be operating Free overnight camping available - Saturday night ONLY. Tents & swags ONLY. Unfortunately due to space restrictions NO caravans or camper trailers permissible. Please be respectful with your comments. We're a small, country club run by volunteers who spend a huge amount of their own time creating this fantastic event. Unfortunately plans and work were already well underway to set the grounds up with no camping at all. We are mindful that the Qld Government can revert or change their rulings at any time leading up to our event. We want to give our patrons as much of the Burrandowan experience as possible without putting further pressure on our volunteers if circumstances that are outside of our control change again. So get your backside trackside! For further info & to buy your tickets now @ www.burrandowan.com.au #WeCantWait #ItsADate #May8 #Yesourposterwillbeupdated

05.01.2022 Cruciate Disease in Dogs Cruciate disease is a very common orthopaedic disorder seen in the knee or stifle of the dog. Signs can vary from a sudden appearance of hind limb lameness through to a slight lameness or even a reluctance to flex the knee. This is often obvious when the dog will sit with their legs out to the side or even difficulty noted when getting up and will often walk away with some lameness. This is associated with damage to the cruciate ligaments of the knee ...whether it be some fraying or partial tears through to complete rupture of the cruciate ligament. There are two cruciate ligaments in the knee which cross over each other to give knee stability. If the stability is lost, then we have abnormal movement within the knee joint and this results in pain and development of long term arthritis. Usually it is the anterior cruciate ligament which causes problems. In humans, rupture is usually acute from hyperextension of the knee. This is occasionally seen in dogs but is usually associated with slow deterioration of the ligament over a period of time. There are many contributing factors causing this slow degeneration ranging from breed predisposition, poor blood supply to the ligament, angle within the knee, positioning of the knee cap etc. Diagnosis at times can be difficult considering the spectrum of damage to the ligament. A complete rupture will result in quite a degree of knee instability while a partial tear may only produce minor abnormal movements with some pain on pressure. Often radiographs are required to assess the changes within the joint. Treatment will vary depending on the individual case. The problem is this is one situation that will deteriorate with age if left untreated. As a rule, surgical stabilization is required and even then, there is variation in the technique that is used depending on age, weight, activity level etc. The most common method we tend to use now is what is known as a Tibial Tuberosity Advancement Technique where we open into the stifle joint, clean out any damage caused to the cartilages or ligaments and then cut down vertically through the top of that tibia or shin bone. A titanium wedge is placed within this cut though the bone and stabilized with a bone plate and screws. This advancement of the front of the tibia changes angles within the knee joint and prevents further abnormal movements. Steve Kelly BVSc,
