25.01.2022 2017 DR EDGE TASMANIA PINOT NOIR $50 a bottle Free delivery for 6 bottles or more After trying the cracking 2019 Dr Edge Tasmania Pinot I spoke to Pete about getting some more 2019 across and he said that overseas hadn't taken their allocation of 2017. In the conversations that we have had, Pete kept saying that the 2017 vintage was the best vintage he had made closely followed by the 2019. ... Well I thought if the 2019 was that good, what was the 2017 going to be like. Well Holy S**t Batman, how good is this was my words, so a few days later I tried it again just to see if it was that good and I said Holy Toledo Batman, it was that good. The boy is a genius when it comes to cool climate wines and for me the top winemaker in Tasmania for his amazing consistency of wine over the last years whether it be at Bay of Fires, Meadowbank or Dr Edge. 2017 Dr Edge Tasmania Pinot tasting note: This is Tasmanian Perfection. A knockout Pinot Noir. I am telling you this is perfection. This expresses everything that is great about Pinot Noir. This is a majestic wine, of great savoury complexity. It offers a garden of spices alongside almost casual purity of varietal fruit, but the core of this great pinot is its mouthfeel and length created by the stealth of its oh so fine yet persistent tannins. Beautifully composed with florals, candied peel, citrus and stone fruit, creamy with nougat-like leesy characters. Juicy and succulent. A joy to drink. Better with food. 2019 Ferine Grenache 150 year old vines from Angaston Light, frisky and aromatic Grenache, layered with mint and florals over cranberry and fresh raspberry perfume. It’s energetic, with great depth of flavour, a little rasp of tannin, energy and tension, and a cool long finish that’s just so appealing, This is a wine that evaporates a little too quick, you will be reachinfg for the second bottle before you know it. Bloody beautiful. Love this style of Grenache. 2018 Rock:it Grenache Cinsault Shiraz Mataro This is a wondrously good Barossa Valley blend; the aromas verging on outright perfume, and certainly spiced, but it is the palate that takes it into the highest realm. There is an intricate pattern of predominantly cherry, blood plum, dark berries, spice a nd a meatiness without the faintest hint of confection. It has excellent mouthfeel (no hint of alcohol heat), balance and length. In a word, remarkable. 2018 Greenock Shiraz This is a Barossa shiraz for the ages. Mighty but meticulously well crafted, awash with blueberry, blackberry, sweet-spice and plum fruit flavour, and boasting a finish that sets sail for tomorrow. 22.01.2022 2018 Salomon Kogl Riesling $36.50 a bottle The best Riesling that I have tried this year. A sublime wine that leaves you wanting more and more. Exceptional cellaring potential. ... I have always said that Austria makes the Best Riesling in the world and this is a prime example of why. It really is that good. You cant achieve the results and work the vineyards in Australia like you can in Europe. Full-bodied, fresh and elegant on the palate, this is lean and mineral driven but also dense, intense and persistent Riesling full of energy and finesse. The vineyard became known as the K1 vineyard, as this unique, groundbreaking site was the first commercial planting of vines in the Kuitpo region.... Today, the K1 wines are considered to be some of Australias finest ultra-premium, single estate wines. I believe this is the best Tempranillo in the country right now. 16.01.2022 GARAGISTE WINES - Mornington Peninsula, Vic Rising Superstar from the Mornington I tried these wines a couple of months ago and was blown away by the quality from the entry level wines right up to the top end. I could have featured all of them but there were 3 in particular that I thought were exceptionally made. ... All the wines are exceptional. James Halliday, The Australian Australian Chardonnay is in a great place; so too is the Garagiste range. Campbell Mattinson, winefront.com.au Anyone with even a passing interest in cool-climate Australia will already know that Garagiste is one of the Mornington Peninsulas brightest rising stars. Barnaby Flanders created the Garagiste label following his amicable split with Allies co-founder David Chapman (who continues with the Allies label). Barney now focuses on a snug range of small-batch wines from fruit sourced from the highly prized Merricks Grove vineyard, the Silverwood vineyard (Balnarring), and the Hugh Robinson vineyard in Moorooduc. 2018 Merricks Chardonnay This is like the crescendo of Nessun Dorma, sung by Pavarotti of course, this soars and the length goes on and on. This is extraordinary value for Chardonnay. I had a few people that i trust tell me how good these Dappled wines were, so i got in contact with Shaun and asked what he had available. He said only Chardonnay. Not trying it before but trusting my friends I bought 3 dozen and wished i had bought 30 dozen after trying it. For me this is the best value Chardonnay i have seen this year in Australia. It is everything I look for in a white wine. It is an absolute steal for the price. It's a wondrous wine. Flinty, direct, pure and authoritative. It tastes of oatmeal, white peach, apple, grapefruit and cedar wood though a) everything is cut and freshened by citrus and b) those flinty, struck match notes are stitched into every cranny. 13.01.2022 2017 DOMAINE CHARVIN COTES DU RHONE - Southern Rhone, France "The Romanee Conti of Southern Rhone" The Highest Accolade you can receive... Genius Winemaker - Laurent Charvin This small Domaine of 8ha of Chteauneuf and 15ha of Ctes du Rhne produces some of the finest and most elegant wines in the south of France. Its one of the few estates in the Rhne valley that is consistently praised by both the conventional media like Wine Advocate or Wine Spectator as well as by lovers of natural and organic artisan wine. Its a little bit like Chateau Rayas but affordable." Its all farmed organically with near obsessive compulsion by Laurent himself, who rarely leaves the Domaine even for a holiday. He works the soils to keep the natural humidity and freshness. Rarely have we visited over the last 20 years to not find Laurent coming in from the vines! In the cellar, the process is simple. Laurent practises whole bunch fermentation and long ageing in concrete tank, using natural yeasts, and no additives other than a minimal dose of sulfites, bottled with no fining, no filtration. Quite a few producers are now returning to whole bunch fermentation outside of the carbonic maceration practice. But using whole bunches successfully is the result of years of work in the vines to ensure ripe stems as well as grapes so its not easy to achieve the kind of finesse that Laurent does. Immense concentration and yet the flavours are bell clear. This puts the super into premium. It bursts with cherries and berries both black and blue onto the palate and then stamps earth, spices and assorted petals all over. Its dry, serious and joyous at once. The tannins are silky and velvety and the flavour rockets through the finish. Absolutely delicious.

Without them we will not have a wine industry. We certainly wouldnt be making the wines that we are in Australia without them. Australia is truly making world-class wines and we have an great opportunity to keep it going, if we can get through this epidemic. The small wine producers bring so much happiness to people li...ves, whether tasting wines at cellar door, trying a new wine suggested by a sommelier in a restaurant or simply bragging to a mate about a new wine discovery that you found. They also employ 10s of thousands of people throughout Australia whether it be in the winery/cellar door, vineyards, wine distribution and restaurants (there will be no sommeliers anymore) who have now lost their jobs. We have a great chance once we get through this epidemic, to be at the forefront and lead the way around the world with wine and let all the wonderful winemakers and brilliant viticulturalists we have in Australia to showcase their talents. Luke Lambert is the most exciting producer that i have seen since Tim Kirk from Clonakilla walked through the doors 20 years ago at the retail store i worked at. Luke is fast becoming the top cool climate producer in this country for Shiraz, Chardonnay, Rose & Nebbiolo. He is now challenging the mantle of my favourite Australian producer Clonakilla for the top cool climate Shiraz in this country. This is a...bsolutely delicious. Feel, flavour, complexity and length. You can sink into this one and quite happily lose yourself It has spectacular crimson-purple colour, wonderful black and blue fruits, meaty and spicy notes, quality oak on the palate. It coats the mouth with flavour and then just carries on, bolstered by perfect tannins on the very long and beautifully balanced finish. 06.01.2022 2013 Coates Adelaide Hills Chardonnay - $45 a bottle Drinking this tonight. Wow! Utterly delicious. Duane Coates has probably been the most underrated Chardonnay producer in Australia. He puts a lot of those $50 - $200 Australian Chardonnays to shame and I guarantee they do not age this well. If you were to shuts your eyes and drink it, you swear you a are drinking Meursault from Burgundy. Amazingly fresh for a 7 year old chardonnay. Delicious chardonnay, perfectly ripened g...rapes with evenly poised white stone fruit (white peach, nectarine), citrus (grapefruit) and a cashew/roasted hazelnut flavours that give energy and velocity to the palate, oak merely a vehicle. Yum! Far too cheap. The scary part of this is that the 2019 Coates Adelaide Hills Chardonnay - $30 a bottle or $27 in dozen may be even better. Available now. 5 dozen available The 2019 is the best chardonnay parcels I have ever seen in Kuitpo, Adelaide Hills.
06.01.2022 SCHWARZ WINE COMPANY, Barossa Valley, SA From Rising Star to Star Risen Owner/Winemaker Jason Schwarz is making one of the finest collection of wines out of the Barossa. From the Chenin Blanc right up to the Limited Edition Loveday Shiraz these wines are beautifully made. They have purity, power, structure and wonderful balance. These wines drink beautifully now, but will get even better with time. ... From what i see in Jasons wines is he is prepared to keep yields low in the vineyards, and ensure that only the healthy grapes reach the fermentation tanks. He will use only good quality oak. He is searching for fruit quality as well as complexity, for the taste of the southern sun combined with an elegance and power that make the wines of the Barossa serious to any competitors in the world. The end result is that he is bringing out the huge potential of the region, setting an example for others, as well as providing drinking pleasure for us. Three wines I would like to feature are as follows: 2018 SCHWARZ GRENACHE SHIRAZ MATARO A wine worth crowing about. The violets and spice notes come in lock-step with the blackberry, mulberry and plum flavours. Its fresh and complex, moreish and highly engaging. Weight doesnt really come into it but theres more than enough here. Refreshing feel to it just puts another tick on the positive side of the ledger. 2019 SCHWARZ META GRENACHE The Meta wines are some of my favourite drinking wines in Australia over the past few years. This Grenache is my favourite of the trio, but they are all stunning. A truly beautiful grenache; elusive hints of cinnamon on the bouquet, and juicy red fruits of every description flow seamlessly across the supple, vibrant light-bodied palate. 05.01.2022 2017 Burn Cottage Pinot Noir A stunning Central Otago Pinot.The top of the tree for me when it comes to Central Otago Pinot. I never swallow samples during tasting but did with this wine. Its just so damn delicious. These wines dont feel so forced, and have a distinct personality. Plum, cherry, dried roses, toasted hazelnut, a wee bit of sweet spice. Its silky and supple, fills the mouth with quiet intensity, acidity sitting happily inside the wine, some sappy energy, but... its the quality of tannin, that sets it apart. Ripe strawberry and a floral perfume mingles with more umami flavours on a long finish. Wonderful.
