20.01.2022 We were blessed with a donation from a lovey local woman who wanted to make sure that our families had a fun Christmas, so we decided to have our annual Christm...as party at Forster Entertainment Centre. We all had an amazing time and were lucky enough to have a covid safe visit from Santa. Thank you to all the amazing community members and local businesses who made this all possible, donating food hampers, presents and financial donations for our families this year. A huge thank you to Jo Garsia and friends for putting together 10 amazing food hampers and thank you to Pymble Ladies' College for driving them all the way up here from Sydney in time for our party. 16.01.2022 Women escaping domestic violence will soon have a new place to seek refuge Great Lakes Womens Shelter president Julie Brady knows it's going to take a lot mo...re than additional housing to reduce the problem of domestic violence in the area, but it'll certainly help ease the burden that currently exists.. At present, there is a constant waiting list to get into either of the organisation's two shelters, but by this time next year, Ms Brady hopes that'll no longer be the case. Construction is set to begin in the new year on a purpose-built shelter in Forster, and it's completion will double the capacity of the shelter. Ms Brady knows the organisation will be in a much better position to help women and, as is usually the case, their children deal with the ongoing terror of domestic violence and have a new start in life as a family. "With our expanded capacity, we hope to be able to meet most of the demand," Ms Brady said. "This is huge." Not only is the development huge in a figurative sense, it's a big step forward for the women's shelter in terms of scale. Located on a 1600 square-metre block on Goldens Road, the new shelter will be able to accommodate up to 10 families as well as staff, meeting rooms and an outreach office. The new shelter is being funded by capital grants from the State and the Federal Governments, and a private philanthropic grant. Ms Brady says I gratefully acknowledge the support of the Member for Myall Lakes, Stephen Bromhead, and the Member for Lyne, Dr. David Gillespie, whose support has been critical in providing this much-needed service in Regional NSW. Considering the existing two shelters can house a maximum of five families between them and their locations are kept low-key for security reasons, Ms Brady says the new shelter will bring a number of immediate benefits. "First of all it's one location, so from a staff point view it is much easier to support the residents and allows more efficient use of staff time" she said. "Secondly, it'll be secure. We will have state-of-the-art security." Thirdly, it is designed-for-purpose, allowing more flexibility for accommodating different families, more amenity and more dignity for residents. In addition, when the shelter opens in 2021 it will free up an additional transitional unit (making 4), for women who have left the shelter but still need a bit more support until they can find their own stable accommodation. As a not-for-profit organisation, Ms Brady knows Project 2020 and all the other the achievements of GLWS after only 5 years of operations would not have been possible without the help of the shelter's many supporters. She believes this support is indicative of the wide-reaching understanding of the nature of domestic violence, and the reason that so many people want to help combat it. "I think domestic violence touches so many more families than anybody knows," Ms Brady said. "Almost everybody has been touched by this scourge in our communities." The shelter has relied on a variety of sources to fund its operations since it came into being in January 2016, including Local, State and federal governments, the Registered Clubs sector, private philanthropists and the Great Lakes community. The new shelter, which Ms Brady says is by far the biggest initiative of GLWS to date, has largely been made possible as the result of a $1.39 million grant from the Federal Government, added to a previous grant from the NSW Government, and a very generous leasing arrangement with MidCoast Council on a very suitable block of land. Beyond the Shelter’s expected completion in late 2021, Ms Brady says the organisation will turn more of its energies towards education to boost prevention, lobbying for improved services and working closely with the community to bring about cultural change. As valuable as she knows providing a safe place is, she believes education and bringing about changes in cultural attitudes are the real keys to reducing domestic violence. "I say what we're doing now is dealing with the problem, we're not dealing with the source," Ms Brady said. "The more we talk about it in the community the more we work to bring about meaningful change."

05.01.2022 Misogynistic comments are not harmless. They have a demonstrable link to domestic violence. So often formal studies reveal a 'derrr - we knew that' response fro...m society. A recent University of NSW study published in the journal Psychological Science has just quantified what so many of us 'knew'. Misogynistic comments including via social media are not harmless. Professor Tom Denson from the UNSW School of Psychology said, 'It contributes to norms of violence toward women and a hostile worldview that may slip into real-world violence.' Too many people are fairly flippant about these verbal comments and about what is posted on social media yet the study suggests caution about posting misogynistic hate speech. Even if the person who posts is not violent, such posts seem to create an atmosphere where violence toward women may be more likely." The UNSW study developed a large set of misogynistic tweets over a two-year period to predict domestic violence incidents. The data came from reports by local law enforcement agencies in the US to the Federal Bureau of Investigation on arrests for domestic and family violence over a two-year period from 2013 to 2014. Data was also collected on a number of population-level factors known to contribute to domestic and family violence including the availability of alcohol, income inequality, gender inequality and population size, as well as Twitter data from 2013-2014.

05.01.2022 https://peak.good.do/fundwdvcas/FundWDVCASNow/ Women's Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Services (WDVCAS) provide critical support, safety planning, court advocacy, case coordination, information and referral services to women experiencing domestic and family violence in every local area across NSW. State-wide, they supported 53,527 women last year, providing 286,722 occasions of service.... This is a record number, representing a whopping 62% increase in services the last two years alone. And demand keeps rising as more and more women experiencing violence and abuse reach out for support. Concerningly, WDVCASs haven't received an increase in core funding from the NSW Government to meet rising client demand, meaning they are doing more with less. That's why WDVCASs need additional funding in this year's budget. Please contact your local MP and the Attorney General and Minister for Prevention of Domestic Violence to call on them to support increased funding for WDVCASs. Please tell them, it has never been more important to support women and their children experiencing domestic and family violence. We value our frontline domestic and family violence specialists and their life-saving work, and they should be funded to meet the increasing support needs of women in NSW escaping violence.
