25.01.2022 Orthodox Q & A with Bishop Silouan of Sinope - Episode 35

24.01.2022 Message from His Eminence Archbishop Makarios on International Greek Language Day Today when we commemorate our national poet Dionysios Solomos, all Hellenism ...proudly celebrates, for the fourth year, International Greek Language Day. And no one is excluded from this celebration. On the contrary, everyone participates and there are many who regardless of their origin, recognise the fundamental role that Greek language has played in the consolidation of European as well as world culture. And, naturally, all Christians participate wholeheartedly, considering that the Greek language was the vehicle that spread the Holy Gospel and Christ’s Truth throughout the universe. Our local Greek community in Australia has an additional reason for celebration today and this is because, from the very beginning, it embraced and supported the endeavour for the establishment of International Greek Language Day. Moreover, personally, I have no doubt that our compatriots here in the Antipodes constitute the most dynamic part of Greeks abroad, and keep alive their relationship with the motherland, honouring the customs and mores, the traditions, the Orthodox faith and, of course, the language of our ancestors. For our Holy Archdiocese, it is a primary duty and sacred obligation to work for the conservation and strengthening of these strong bonds. With the deep conviction that the Greek language constitutes a formative element of our identity, we have dedicated ourselves to the goal of defending and reviving it; a goal that is firmly and steadily served by our educational institutions through the capable teaching staff as well as by our parishes, through the care and concern of our good priests and the members of the church committees. Furthermore, it is served by occasional circumstances that warrant it, such as when our local Church led the fight to save the Greek Studies Program at La Trobe University in Melbourne. Therefore, honouring its role and responsibility towards the Greek community, the Holy Archdiocese will continue to be present daily in all the small and large battles, holding high the flag of the sacred struggle for the perpetuation of the Greek language in Australia. But we need the help of all our compatriots; to make this struggle a personal and family matter, in every household, in every neighbourhood, and in every corner on this fifth continent where the heart of Hellenism beats. My personal request, on this day, is for all of us to follow the exhortation of our poet, Kostis Palamas: Hold high the banners for our mother tongue! .. , , , , . . , - - , , , . , , , . , . , , , , , , . . , . , , , . , , , , La Trobe . , , . , , , . , , , : " "!

21.01.2022 Adelaide: Walk for Life 2021 On Saturday 6th of February 2021, the organisation known as Love Adelaide organised the second annual Walk for Life rally, aimed at protesting against the scourge of abortion. Held again in Pennington Gardens (in front of Adelaide Oval), more than 5000 people attended the event a fact made all the more remarkable by the unseasonably cold and wet weather that presented on the day. Although many prayed for fairer weather, perhaps God in His pr...Continue reading

20.01.2022 Orthodox Q & A with Bishop Silouan of Sinope - Episode 36

19.01.2022 Spiritual Day Retreat and Pilgrimage to Wallaroo S.A On Sunday 7th of February 2021, the St Stephen’s Central Youth Committee of the Archdiocesan District of Adelaide organised a day retreat at the parish of St Nicholas, Wallaroo. The day got off to a beautiful start, with a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy presided by His Grace Bishop Silouan of Sinope. Concelebrating with him were the parish priest Fr Christos Tsoraklidis and visiting priests Fr Michael Psaromatis and Fr Jeremy ...Krieg. The service was well attended, with the modest church filling to its COVID capacity, including many of the youth who took the 1h45m journey from Adelaide, and a few others who also came down from the neighbouring parish in Port Pirie. His Grace spoke inspiringly on the Parable of the Talents the Gospel reading for the day. After the service, those present were treated to a wonderful luncheon of fried fish by the local philoptochos, followed by coffee and a nice combination of Greek and non-Greek sweets. This was in turn followed by an informal Q and A session with the clergy who were present, with the youth asking some of the questions about the faith that were of interest to them. After the Q & A session, the group took a stroll down to the local jetty quite an impressive structure - taking in the peaceful scenery and chatting with the local recreational anglers. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all as a great opportunity for Orthodox Christian fellowship so much so that it is likely to be repeated with our other regional parishes in the months to come.

16.01.2022 111 late-term abortions = not rare! It is interesting that proponents of the Abortion-to-Birth Bill will not publicly say that the Bill won't allow abortion-to-birth. This is because they know it will allow abortion-to-birth. When asked the question, they try and dodge the question by not answering directly - instead of simply saying "yes it will", they instead say "late-term abortions are rare". The implication is that, because they are rare, we don’t have to worry about t...hem. But how rare are they really? Here are some comparisons from official South Australian statistics from 2017: 55 homicide-related offences [1] 100 deaths in motor vehicle accidents [2] 111 abortions > 20weeks’ gestation [3] As you can see, late-term abortion is more common than motor vehicle deaths and death by homicide. No one would dare claim that these problems are rare, nor imply that we shouldn’t worry about them each one involves a tragic loss of life, and we (quite rightly) spend a lot of money on prevention. When proponents of the abortion-to-birth bill claim that late-term abortion is rare, they are referring to the fact that they only make up a small percentage of all abortions (around 2.6% of all abortions in 2017). It is true that the percentage is small, but it is not because late-term abortions are rare - it’s because (sadly) abortions are exceedingly common. There were 4,349 abortions in 2017 (an average of nearly 12 per day, one every two hours). But of all the statistics in the debate, there is one that can certainly and legitimately classify as rare - that is, the number of women that have been criminally prosecuted for abortion. How rare are such prosecutions? Zero, nought, nix, nada! It is so rare that it simply is not a problem that needs to be fixed. It is important to bear this in mind, when proponents try to tell us that the main reason for the Bill is the need to decriminalise abortion. But if criminal prosecutions are rare, then why the need? Answer: There is no need. It’s a smokescreen for the real changes. 15.01.2022 What proponents of the Abortion-to-Birth Bill are not saying In recent days, proponents of the Abortion-to-Birth Bill have come out in the counter-attack. Tammy Franks' letter (which we posted below), Vickie Chapman's letter to Senator Alex Antic, the President of the Law Society - they say many things, but above all, they say that we are being "misled". What is most interesting is what they are *not* saying.... They are *not* saying that this Bill *doesn't* allow abortion-to-birth. They are being very careful not to say this, because they know that this Bill does allow exactly that. Instead of addressing this issue directly, they try to deflect attention from it by saying that abortion in the third trimester is "rare". As with all deception, there is an element of truth to this. Certainly, abortion is "rare" when compared with the total number of abortions conducted - around only 2.6% of all abortions in 2017 were for third trimester. But to put it into absolute terms, with around 4,300 abortions in SA in 2017, that means around 110 late-term abortions. By comparison, there were only 100 deaths due to road accidents in SA in the same year - and still we spend millions (rightly so) trying to reduce that number still further!!! Being "rare" is not an excuse to allow it to happen. The second reason that this comment is deceptive is because the main reason that this Bill is being put forward is (supposedly) to decriminalise abortion. Yet, prosecution is even rarer than late-term abortion - in fact, no woman or medical practitioner has actually been prosecuted for this crime for years! If being "rare" is an excuse to do nothing, then this Bill simply isn't needed at all! Please stay informed - let your friends, relatives, co-workers and most importantly your MPs know about these issues, and most important that you are unhappy with them.

14.01.2022 Another abortion article and poll - please go and vote! Two heroic female MPs from opposite sides of the House are standing up against the awful Abortion-to-Birth Bill. Ironically, while Vickie Chapman pontificates about the benefits of this Bill for women in regional areas, the State's only two female MPs from regional areas are both against it. Ms Chapman thinks that men don't have the right to speak on this issue because they are not women - well, following that argumentat...ion, what gives her the right to speak on this issue on behalf of regional women, when she herself is not from a regional area? Also note that in this article, there is a video showing "hundreds" of people rallying in support of the decriminalisation of abortion. Why did they choose that video posted for an article about those *against* the Bill? Why not instead post a video of the Walk for Life rally from February of this year, which was attended by *thousands* (not hundreds) of supporters! Whatever happened to balanced journalism??? Please get on there and vote! https://t.co/U5kGWkBPSy?amp=1

11.01.2022 Today (Nov 30), we celebrate the feast of the the Holy and Glorious Apostle Andrew, the first called. >>> Happy name day to all those celebrating today. Before ...we speak of the life of this incredible saint and witness to our Lord and Saviour, we wish all people bearing this name a very happy and blessed name day. May we all take strength and follow the example of the saints in our lives. We also wish St Andrew's Greek Orthodox Theological College and all those studying and teaching at this institution, named in honour of this saint, the intercessions of Saint Andrew both now and into the future. [At the bottom of this post there is some really useful information about this College] >>> About the life of the Holy and Glorious Apostle Andrew, the first called. As the first to be called by Jesus Christ into his service, St Andrew commands a reverence a degree greater than those who have followed. For this reason, St Andrew is called Protokletos, or First-called. St Andrew, like his brother St Peter, was a fisherman, a toiler with net and boat recognised in the Psalms of the Old Testament as one of those who go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; these see the works of the Lord and his wonders in the deep. His love of the sea stemmed from his love of the Creator who made it, and the perils of the sea which he challenged daily forged the character with which he boldly assailed the seas of ignorance and paganism in the sacred trust that had been placed in his keeping. St Andrew, who lived in the Holy Land in the ancient city of Bethsaida, accepted Christ with all his heart and after a discipleship with St John the Baptist went forth to become one of the greatest missionaries in all history. When the apostles drew lots to determine their sphere of labour for the Saviour, St Andrew exulted in his mission to preach in Asia Minor, part of Greece, and an area along the coast of the Black Sea, including its gateway, Constantinople. Wherever St Andrew went he attracted throngs of people who thirsted for a spiritual knowledge. His message of deliverance was so eloquently convincing, even to hostile minds, that he is credited with having converted countless thousands to Christianity in a day when mass media did not exist. As an apostle, his only tools were his power of oratory and his love for Jesus, and his only press agent was the word of mouth of those privileged to hear his homilies. St Andrew came to Jerusalem for the First Synod of the Apostles, about 50 AD, another historic first for him and the other apostles, some of whom he had not yet met. There he rejoiced in joining the great St Peter together with those but for whom Christianity might never have become the glorious human experience it is today. Out of the Synod, the apostles went forth with renewed vigour to establish the ecclesiastical system. St Andrew alone is credited with having set up parishes throughout Asia Minor, in Pontos, Bithynia, Thrace, Macedonia, Greece, Scythia (Russia, where he is still regarded as patron saint) and in the capital city of Byzantium. It was in Byzantium that St Andrew ordained Stachys as first bishop of Byzantium (later Constantinople), thereby establishing an unbroken line of 270 patriarchs down to the present day Patriarch Bartholomeos I. From Byzantium, St Andrew went on to more glory through his compelling oratory and power of healing through Jesus Christ. He eventually found himself in Achaia, in the city of Patras, where he was to suffer death. St Andrew committed the grave crime in the eyes of the state of converting Maximilla, wife of the ruler Aigeates, to Christianity. Despite the fact that he was then eighty years old, it was ordered that he be put to death by being nailed upside down to an X-shaped cross. After three days of agony on this vile device, St Andrew died. The great fisherman had cast his net for Christ for the last time. >>> Opportunity to bear witness to Christ in our lives, in the spirit of Saint Andrew, the First called Apostle. In the same way that the Apostle Andrew accepted the calling to bear witness, this institution allows males and females to learn and evangelise the message of Christ! Founded in 1986, today St Andrew's offer in-person (internal) and distance (external) study opportunities, at undergraduate and postgraduate level, for faithful seeking knowledge about our faith and Christianity more broadly. > Mode of Study: Full-time and part-time. > Study Options: In-person and Distance. > Programs: Diploma, Bachelor, Masters, Research + more. > Language: Delivered in English. [Open to people across ALL Orthodox jurisdictions]. Saint Andrew's have programs to suit all personal work/living circumstances, no matter where you might be based in Australia or overseas. It is the only accredited Orthodox tertiary institution of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and on December 17 they are holding an open day. Available to all those who might be interested to learn about the College, held both in person or online via ZOOM. Please email Fr Irenaeus to register ([email protected]).

07.01.2022 Message of the Archbishop of Australia for International Mother’s Day Love without limits and conditions!... Love that is selfless and sacrificial! Infinite and unlimited love, from the beginning to the end! We bring to mind, today, with these few words that are, of course, impossible to fully describe the greatness of maternal devotion, the person who became God’s co-creator in giving us the divine gift of life, that warm embrace that was offered to us as a safe refuge from when we first entered the world, the venerable person that sculpted our soul and character, and guided, enlivened and inspired our steps. Whether she is near or far away, the mother figure has defined, and continues to unceasingly define, the life of each and every one of us. Maybe because, by sacrificing her self, a mother wondrously transfuses to her children, a very part of her self. It is our duty to her, but also our duty to ourselves, to show our love and gratitude by every appropriate means, every day of the year. I would like to wish all mothers, ‘many blessed years’ and evoke them to have as a model, but also as their companion in difficulties, the All-Holy Theotokos, the Mother of God and the Mother of us all.
