23.01.2022 Have spent the last two days at the Australian Landscape Conference and feel all inspired

19.01.2022 Off to see my second design client tomorrow - gotta love word of mouth, especially as my first client is spruking me before I have even given him any designs :)

12.01.2022 I actually have my first design client, scarily early in the game. Will treat it as a practice run so that even if it doesn't go any further than the initial design phase I can still learn something from the experience.

12.01.2022 The last two days saw me clearing ivy off about 30 metres of fenceline. This is a timely reminder that ivy, if left unchecked, can easily get out of hand. This one had stems up to 15cm in diameter which for ivy is a lot and suggests it has been left uncontrolled for several years. While it is persistant and hard to eradicate completely, with regular maintenance it is possible to keep it under control and eventually get rid of it. The key is to prevent it from climbing because this is when it flowers and seeds and spreads even more. With its little suckers it can cling to virtually any surface. So while the weather is good get out there and pull some ivy, it can be quite satisfying.

04.01.2022 This is a basic colour sketch for a garden design for Belgrave Pre-School

04.01.2022 Latest landscape job is to create a fairy garden in a pre-school - this one sounds like lots of fun.

03.01.2022 Thanks and welcome to all my new "likies" this week. I plan to use this page to show people what I do and provide info on various garden related topics so watch this space. . . .

02.01.2022 God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the strength to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." A cliche I know..., but still a favourite, because it is a good motto to live, and garden by. In a way gardening is a constant struggle between trying to bend nature to our will, and being completely at the mercy of natures cycles and whims. After many years of trying to impose my will on this difficult section of my backyard I am finally accepting that I cannot change this site to suit my needs. As this is the only flat, sunny spot I have always tried to grow vegies here, at times with some success, at times with pure frustration. This last season, being so wet, has finally shown me that this site is, and always will be, a swamp and that I need to let it be just that. I may not be able to grow vegetables here but I have the "strength and wisdom" now to turn this area into something equally beautiful and functional - a swamp garden with plants that filter all that runoff and help slow the flow of water. I will continue to add photos and notes on this project because I think it is a good example of working with the site conditions and thus gardening sustainably. See more
