24.01.2022 Vale Maxwell (Max) Hogno The Moruya Sharks RLFC are saddened to hear of the passing of Max Hogno following a short illness. Max was an iconic member of our co...mmunity. He moved to Moruya in 1965 with his wife Merle & young family (to continue his career as a Clerk of Petty Sessions now known as Court Registrar) and our township became better for it. Max was an all round sportsperson but his two main passions were Rugby League and the Surf Life Saving movement, excelling at both. He was an outstanding and gifted league player with his preferred position being centre but equally as skilful at lock or five-eight. His job took him to a number of country towns where he quickly established himself in each A grade side as a leading player as well as representing the various Groups and Divisions. He also received offers to play for Balmain and Western Suburbs in the elite Sydney ARL competition but he turned them down choosing his career and family first. He captained/coached the Nowra Warriors in Group 7 to consecutive grand finals and prior to coming to Moruya was captain/coach of Bombala in our Group 16 competition also leading them to a grand final. It was while playing for Bombala he became the greatest ever single game point scorer in A grade rugby league where he amassed a record individual tally of 40 points (6 tries and 11 goals) against an opposing Group 16 team 46 points in todays scoring as try’s were only 3 points then. A record that still stands to this day. In 1965 Moruya did not have a team with many Moruya players playing for Bodalla including Max as captain coach. Moruya reformed in 1966 with Max coaching the reserve grade side and playing first grade, who made the GF, only to be defeated In 1969 whilst playing first grade he succeeded this time in coaching the reserve grade to win the title. Known records indicate that this was the first, reserve grade premiership for the Moruya Club. Testimony to the victory is proudly displayed with a team photo hanging on the wall of fame at the Adelaide Hotel, the Sharks major sponsor. Also in the same year the first grade team made the grand final only to be beaten again. Max played and coached both first & lower grades including junior teams for Moruya with distinction from 1966 to his retirement from the game in 1972. A career spanning 17 years playing in the top grade as well as achieving an impressive representative resume’. He still remained an ardent supporter of the Sharks, rarely missing a home game. His second passion being Surf Life Saving began at the Nowra Culburra club whilst coaching the Warriors and he soon joined the Moruya SLSC on his arrival to town Max’s extensive involvement and contribution to the club (to the present day) and the Surf Life Saving movement in general was recognised with life membership of both his Moruya Club and the Far South Coast Branch, SLSA. Max (together with Merle) was dedicated to the community and he held various executive/volunteer positions with many clubs and charitable organisations including President of our Moruya RLFC and the Surf Club. His community and sporting achievements culminated in him being an Olympic Torch Relay Runner in 2000 as well as receiving a Commonwealth Sports Medal Award. Max was a true gentleman and he will be sadly missed by everyone who had the pleasure and privilege of knowing him. Our deepest condolences are extended to his wonderful wife Merle and family.

24.01.2022 Nominations for the girls tackle have been excellent. Despite all the hurdles the year has thrown up it’s shaping to be record numbers in most grades, however we’d like to see an extra side in the 12’s age bracket to bring the number of sides up to 4, if your club doesn’t have a side but you are keen to play there is a proposal to make a combined side from multiple clubs. If this appeals to you contact your club and get them to pass your name on.

24.01.2022 Congratulations Pat Walsh on receiving Life Membership of Group 16 Referees Association

22.01.2022 We’ve been asking for any old Group 16 photos that anyone may have, so we can preserve them all in one place for generations to come. Low and behold this arrived in our inbox. Could this be the reason there are no live radio calls of local football anymore? The side line commentators are Des Shooks and Alan Ball, who else can we recognize ?

15.01.2022 Even though the senior competition has been rested for season 2020, in the interests of keeping our younger players in the game and ensuring the future remains bright for years to come, we are making an effort to keep the U/18's competition going. The proposal is to play on Saturday's after the U/16's. All 17 and 18 year old players who are still keen to play are urged to make contact with their clubs to express their interest, to guarantee this will go ahead.

14.01.2022 Looks like the northern part of our group has copped most of the rain this weekend . Fires COVID and floods what a year 2020 has been.

10.01.2022 Group 16 senior and minor rugby league are calling on volunteers. Chairman of the senior board Allan Wilton is urging for anyone who can help, to reach out to help shore up both competitions moving forward. There has never been a more important time to help get Community Rugby League back up and running again with both the Group 16 Senior Rugby League and Group 16 Minor Rugby League competitions asking everyone to help by volunteering and uniting to assist at their local clu...bs Mr Wilton said. Now is the time for our volunteers to help and support our local communities and local rugby league clubs and sport across the region. Me Wilton said there was ongoing support from enormously valued volunteers in the area, many of whom have given years of service to their respective clubs. He said many had given 30 or 40 years of commitment and had been acknowledged with life memberships. And we need more volunteers to keep the sport going locally He said. The more volunteers we can recruit the stronger our sport will be in future years. In a majority of cases our volunteers are aligned to their family’s involvement in the game and in many cases these volunteers leave the game as their family members grow older and leave the game. Mr Wilton said a number of the volunteers, particularly in the senior competition were ‘older in age’ and their vulnerability to the COVID-19 pandemic played a large role in the concerns of moving forward with a season. Mr Wilton said safety and health of volunteers was of utmost importance and Group 16 was working with NSWRL to provide COVID-19 training for volunteers. To further support our volunteers and players each individual club in Group 16 are required to submit safety plans for grounds before training commences and these plans are required to meet NSWRL and NSW Department of Health standards before approved. He said those plans will ensure that as competition goes ahead there will be the safest environment for players, volunteers and spectators. A value on the volunteers’ contribution to our sport at grassroots level just cannot be measured, Mr Wilton said. They are the people that make the game go ahead and without their priceless commitment and contribution we just don’t have a game locally. Sporting opportunities would be fewer without volunteer efforts, Mr Wilton said People wanting to volunteer don’t have to have a background and knowledge of the game of rugby league In many cases it is the routine weekly tasks of setting up, packing up, assisting in the canteens or helping on the barbecue that require help, he said. With minor league to resume on July 18, Mr Wilton said a boost to volunteer numbers was critical and urged everyone to help where they can. See more

09.01.2022 This photo landed in our inbox, it’s of the 1951 Monaro Division Rep Team who played France at Manuka Oval in Canberra. In the Team is Keith Barber from Bega who is now 91 years of age and living at Moran's Crossing near Bemboka. Keith was a front rower aged 20 when he played this game in 1951. Also included in the Team was Bruce Grant a tough and talented backrower from Eden and Don Stewart from Bombala a fleet footed outside back who have both since passed.... With this knowledge it’s created a question, who is the oldest player still living from Group 16 or the old Group 19 that has represented Monaro or NSW Country? Is it Keith? Are there any old Monaro Division or NSW Country Representative Photos that may have any player from Group 16 or the old Group 19 in those teams, lurking in someone’s cupboard? We’d love to see them.

09.01.2022 Bega Roosters Rugby League Football Club would like to express our sincere sympathy to the Curtis and Wilton families following the sad passing after a long ill...ness of Eileen Curtis. Eileen was a past hard working committee member of our club and represented the club as a past Group 16 delegate during her time on the committee. To husband John, and sons Peter (Butch) Tony and families our sincere condolences. Eileen’s Funeral will be held at 11am at St Johns Church of England Bega on the 7th January 2021.

08.01.2022 The November tackle 9’s are on again this year, any girls interested in the 12’s, 14’s, 16’s and opens are urged to make contact with their club so numbers can be finalized. The comp has been building since its inception and is sure to be another welcome addition given our lack of Rugby League this year.

08.01.2022 Cogratulations to Group 16’s Braiden McIntosh who has been appointed to the Open Men’s Final in the Country Championships. This is the top appointment in Regional (Country) NSW. This makes Braiden the No.1 referee in Regional (Country) NSW. The last time Group 16 had the No.1 referee was Ray Inskip in the mid 1990's Congratulations Braiden!!

03.01.2022 The Group 16 Senior Rugby League Clubs at its General Meeting last night (Wednesday 10th June) voted to suspend the Group 16 Senior Competition for Season 2020. All Senior Clubs acknowledged the extreme hardships that have been placed on our communities and businesses over the past 12 months because of the drought, the bush fires and now the COVID-19 Pandemic restrictions. The decision made took into consideration also for the health, safety and well being of our communities,... players, officials, volunteers and supporters. The delegates from each club further considered the financial impact the drought, bush fires and COVID-19 Pandemic has had all our local businesses, communities and sponsors which would make it difficult for Senior Rugby League Clubs to be financially viable for season 2020. The Clubs and Group 16 Board will now work together to continue the Under 18 Competition and are working in partnership with the Group 16 Minor League to include the Under 18s Competition to be played the remainder of this season after the Under 16s on saturdays. It is important to all clubs to retain and build the Under 18s Competition this season and support this initiative. Senior Clubs and Official are asked to support the Group 16 Minor League Competition in every possible way to ensure are younger players continue to play Rugby League in 2020. The Group 16 Board and all Clubs are committed to working hard to ensure the Senior Competition returns in an even stronger position next season 2021. Allan Wilton Chairman. Group 16 Rugby League.
