25.01.2022 I see a lot of Security Firms claiming to train to the highest of standards, claiming to deliver out-of-this-world services and to deploy the 'best of the best'. We all know this is not the case a lot of the time. But in saying that...... Is it any wonder they skrimp and save, pretty much lie about their training, and simply provide none? Is it any wonder when plenty of clients, especially larger entities, demand their suppliers provide the 'best of the best', almost exclusively, and expect they pay for it all? Expect their Security Firms provide them with the most competent employees and demand consistency... And yet don't pay any extra for it, and don't actually check? How about we all hold ourselves to a higher standard, and then hold our suppliers up against those standards? How about primary clients check in with their suppliers and ensure they are training their teams, by helping to provide the resources to do it? Even just unlock a room for free that they can train their staff in that the primary client apparently cares so deeply about? #OneDay. #guardhere #dreams #ItWorksBothWays

25.01.2022 Its almost tax time! Security Officers are often told all sorts of myths about tax deductions at tax time so I wanted to share a little bit of info. A deduction is not a refund. The ATO sadly arent so nice to give us back 100% of what we spent to earn income. And, as the Government takes GST out of what we pay the provider it wouldnt have been 100% back anyway.... So, what happens is that we get to claim expenses against our tax and in turn reduce the tax we actually pay. So when claiming, if you have a tax rate of 32.5% you essentially get 32.5 cents per dollar spent back as a tax refund. There is also a myth where some security employers tell their staff to claim it on tax as it implies they get it all back. The cheeky buggers dont make it clear that you only get to deduct the expense and get a portion of it back. Saves them the money! Some references and examples of calculations: 1. https://www.myob.com/au/blog/understanding-tax-deductions/ 2. https://www.quora.com/How-do-tax-deductions-work-in-Austral 3. https://community.ato.gov.au//How-do-deductions/ta-p/12524 Hope this helps. 23.01.2022 Review of Victorias Private Security Industry The Victorian State Government is conducting a review of the Security Industry and asked for public submissions. This is an important step in the process as it allows us in the industry to voice our concerns directly to those who can make real change. GuardHERE Consulting, as an advocate for industry, made a submission on the basis of 4 key points that need addressing:... 1. National Licensing. 2. Mandatory CPD (Continuing Professional Development), on the proviso there are real incentives to industry to increase uptake. 3. Stronger representation, monitoring and enforcement on licensing, deployment of personnel and training from RTOs, by the regulatory authorities. 4. Clear licensing classes and training requirements for holders of a business or advisor licence. You can monitor the outcome of the review here: https://engage.vic.gov.au/private-security-review-2020

23.01.2022 A lack of safety? Sadly, it is becoming all too common. Loud noises, large groups, sharp needles on the ground. There is a question here of peoples rights. The haves and have nots. But clean-up costs soar and families get the brunt of the abuse as they go about their daily lives. So, where does one draw the line?... https://guardhereconsulting.com.au/how-to-protect-your-com/

23.01.2022 Looking to start your own Security Business, or in the process of doing so? This blog post will guide you through 5 key areas to consider when starting your own security company. It's part one of my five-part Better Business Series, aimed at new and existing security firms to help them achieve more from the security industry.... What challenges did you face when starting up your own security company? I'd love your feedback! https://guardhereconsulting.com.au/better-business-series-/

22.01.2022 HAVE YOUR SAY. I know a lot of you have a lot to say about the security industry. Especially after this year so far... ... The good. The bad. The ugly. Some of you have left. Others are flying high. Some scraping by. I want to hear from you. I want to hear YOUR responses to the survey. Were looking for honest answers from people in the industry, telling us the types of roles you work in, which you want to work in, the level of training you have and what training youd be interested in doing. Why are we doing this? Ive said many times I am passionate about this industry. There is so much to see and do. Sadly, were not immune to poor working conditions, and the responsibilities continue to grow (minus the pay rate sometimes am I right?!). By contributing your time to this survey youll help us get a benchmark on the level of engagement, training and pay in the industry. This will then be used to look at what training and resources are needed to make things better. Itll be compared to last years stats, too. The survey takes less than 5 minutes, is anonymous, is only 10 questions and will be a great help for our industry research. Results will be shared after it closes in a final report. Thank you in advance! #GuardHERE https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RTGRVNZ

20.01.2022 The RESULTS are IN! Thank you to everyone who took part in this years Great Security Survey. We had 100 respondents in less than two days which is amazing!... The Survey was developed with a few strategies in mind: Where are we at as an industry currently? What roles employ the most? What is the predominant hourly rate? Do people feel as though they are well trained? Is there an appetite for further development? The results were then collated for several uses: Offer insight back to the industry of how it was tracking Provide options for marketing and training Provide a snapshot of the current climate The survey report is free to you as a subscriber of my newsletter. Get your copy now! Just enter your first name and e-mail, and the report is yours! Unsubscribe at any time. 19.01.2022 It's a tough time at the moment. While parts of the Security Industry are booming, others are closed. Some employees are chasing work and being exploited. Some have got enough to make it work. Some are doing fine. But, it is easy to forget about ourselves.... And even during these times, the industry has to keep improving. Take this opportunity to better yourself. Your operation. Your service. To help, I recently asked for feedback on resources that could help you to do just that. I got some good responses. I'll be releasing a bunch of free resources soon just in time for May. These will include a simple business development tracker, personal budget plan, job guides and even information on business set up. If you can think of something else you could use, let me know and I'll see what I can put together! Otherwise, keep an eye out for further updates on this FB page. Hopefully, a little something that will help someone a lot. #GuardHERE https://www.facebook.com/GuardHERE/

17.01.2022 "Security Officers could be owed thousands in back pay". 13.01.2022 A timely reminder that it is ok to not be ok. We haven't got past all that 2020 threw at us, and we as an industry are facing a difficult 2021. 08.01.2022 #lockdown #isolife #GuardHERE #security As we head into "full" stage 4 lockdown here in Victoria (as of 11:59pm tonight), the Security Industry will continue to play an important role in the protection of people and assets. Security Services where required for the safety of a permitted or closed workplace is deemed essential by the Victorian Government.... Employers: You are obligated to provide a safe workplace. This is a duty under Workplace Health and Safety. Employers: You must notify WorkSafe if you have a confirmed case of Covid19 in your workplace. This is a requirement under the OHS Act. Employers: If you remain open, you must have a COVID Safe Plan in place that is regularly updated (unless you are a small business with fewer than 5 employees). Search the Business VIC website for more info. Employers: You must supply your staff a Permit if they are required to leave home for work. Security licences are not enough. The permit is available for download on the DOJ website. Employees: PPE for Security should include sanitiser, safety glasses, gloves and a face mask. Employees: Report to your management if you are feeling unwell. For links to the above resources, see our latest blog updates: https://guardhereconsulting.com.au/coronavirus-and-securit/

06.01.2022 There is a lot to be thankful for this ANZAC Day. Even with the current situation. Even with the tragedy many are facing and will face. 2020 has been an interesting year so far, to say the least.... But we can be thankful that we can celebrate ANZAC Day. To celebrate life. To celebrate what we do have. And remember those who served. And still serve. Who gave us, and give us, the ability to celebrate every moment that we choose. Lest we forget.

05.01.2022 Every day, security officers put themselves at risk helping to keep their communities safe. International Security Officers Day, which takes place on the 24th of July every year, is an opportunity to recognise and thank security officers and those others in the security industry for the work they do. 2020 has been a challenging year. Security have been in the spotlight the entire time and plenty of professional security employees have been working hard. It is now time to pau...se and recognise those efforts. Happy International Security Officers Day and THANK YOU to all those who do the hard yards to do the right thing in our industry. 04.01.2022 It has been a busy week or so at GuardHERE Consulting. Working with a client recently, we were going over costs. It got me thinking of some recent posts I saw where new starters in the industry are left in the dark and often spend way more money than they need to getting started. Thing is, spending lots of money is not always going to give you a return. Really, you got to be smart in where you spend. ... I paid for some advice when I first started my business. It helped me feel more comfortable and gave me some leads to go and research on my own. I learned some lessons from this, so I didnt have to learn the hard way ($$$). To all you new businesses starting out in the industry, I say: Good luck and Good on you! Do it for the right reasons to help this industry grow and change into something more. Get into new business groups and do your research. There can be a lack of information for the Australian market, but there are so many similarities around the globe you can adapt the information to suit. Get advice! You dont have to go at it alone, and it will actually save you money. Remember - You dont know what you dont know!

01.01.2022 Just finished chatting with a client who ended the call by saying: "knowing that you are on the other end of the phone is increasing my confidence in building my business". Wow! ... That type of feedback is why I started my business. Boosting your security services confidence, time and capability.

01.01.2022 #lockdown #isolife #GuardHERE #security Good morning lock downers! Victoria has now fully entered Stage 4 restrictions, with regional Victoria in stage 3. Things are looking very different around the state today and will do so for some time.... This is the start of a long few weeks ahead for those of us in Victoria. It isnt easy seeing the sad news each morning, difficulty in seeing friends and family or even being able to leave your house by more than a few km. It isnt easy for those who are still working, either. Over the coming weeks it is important to reach out to your friends and family for your welfare and theirs. Ask "R U Ok?". Have that conversation. R U Ok you can find on Google and see how to start the conversation, or checkout Beyond Blue (ph. 13 11 14) or Lifeline (ph. 1300 22 4636) which are both examples of organisations that can help you if you need it, and, who can be there for that conversation if you dont have anyone else to have it with. The main thing is to find a little something to do each day. A new routine. And to check in with someone if you need to. Stay strong Victoria.
