10.01.2022 Thought of the day: I often chat with people about issues theyre having with a horse. Not long back I cam across a horse that had really bad skin. I asked if they had tried anything like Troy to wash him. The lass said oh its really difficult because he hates the sound of the hose. All horses do initially. That hissing sounds of the water coming out of the nozzle can sound like a snake or just be scary plus the water touching them. Unfortunately if you buy a well trained ...horse that is bomb proof it can give you a false sense of security that all horses are like this. Remember, every horse you see ridden was once unridden, and every horse you see getting hosed down was initially scared of that hose the first time someone tried to use the hose. Training horses isnt that easy but people like Clinton Anderson and other greats make it look easy at times and unfortunately for many, make it look like they could also do it. Pressure and release, and knowing when to release is probably the main factor here. Ive had very difficult horses to desensitize to a hose in the short time Ive been around horses. You think youve got them trained then the next day its like theyve never seen a hose before The key is perseverance, tenacity & not giving up. 1 night when training Cisco, it took me an hour to catch him, it was dark by the time I got a halter on. Many wouldve given up after 10 minutes. You know what, the next day it took about 60 seconds and everyday after that shorter and shorter time to catch him, now hes happily waiting at the gate to be caught! Going back to the horse with the hose issue. I explained to the woman that its all about taking little steps and getting them closer to the spraying hose then stopping the hose once they stand still & show 1 of the 5 signs of relaxing. She replied:yes, Ive done all that but he still hates the hose. Unfortunately I believe that much to her dismay and her denial she was not doing the training correctly. We need to be honest with ourselves and also learn to analyze what we do and be open to take advice. We need to humbly accept that we can always learn & better ourselves. See more

10.01.2022 1st trail ride for Tequila Sunset today - what a great girl she was. Taking things steady & in no rush, groundwork, plenty of desensitizing and riding in the round yard before hitting the trails. Of course accompanied by my partner in crime Mathilde, lets see how far this young Quarter horse can go

10.01.2022 The best words Ive ever read regarding horses

09.01.2022 When I start colts, I make a point to move all over them, rubbing up their necks, back on their hindquarters and behind their tails, I slap my hands against my ...legs, I take my hat off and wave it in the air, I do anything I can think of to start getting those colts broke to me moving around on them. From day one, I want a colt to know that it’s completely normal to feel a human moving on his back and to see and hear a variety of objects above his eye level. The worst thing you can do on a colt or any horse is to sit like a closed pocket knife, never moving out of position. The one day that you do need to move you need to reach down and open a gate, a friend hands you a bottle of water, or you wave to someone your horse will dump you on your head because you’ve never prepared him to see you moving on his back like that. Horses get good at whatever we allow them to practice. - Clinton #ApplyTheMethod

02.01.2022 You can never do enough training with your horse. People have asked why do I teach a horse to walk over a white towel. Well today on the trail there was a half buried white sack flapping around, easy to spook a horse not desensitized to such a thing. If a horse can walk over a white towel and not be scared then it will most likely walk over most things or not be spooked by a flapping white sack if it comes across one when being ridden. Try different things, flat cardboard boxes etc, all good practice and how to build a bombproof horse. Share your training ideas in the comments below
