13.01.2022 Very tough but understandable decision. One of the best events on the east coast of Australia.

07.01.2022 Lake Cootharaba Cat Challenge Wrap up: Sponsored by Boating & RV, my congratulations go two boats for exhibiting massive improvement over the course of this reg...atta. Ricky Way and Libby Kirby (AKA, "the girls") sailed much faster than usual due to a really well fine-tuned boat on Saturday. Further congradulations go to Mackenzie and her father Bill Kirkley. Mackenzie is really getting along with the group, helping others as she can, and is beginning to seamlessly set up/tear down the boat with her father before and after races -- she's learning so quickly! We had 12 Hobie 16s at the regatta. Some new boats joined such as Anthony Smith and his partner, Wayne Howard and his children, and the fabled Tards (who everybody but me seemed to know but me). There was also an 8 year old girl named Emity crewing for Katie Peterson. It was Emity's second sail ever, holding to the fact that all skill levels are welcome at these events. Saturday included medium but gusty air conditions with Lachlan and Sharon Rayner along with Murray Peterson and Haylee Williams, and Shane Peterson performing top notch as usual. Lachlan got to use his new factory fresh boat which he stated sailed remarkably well compared to other factory fresh boats he had bought in the past. Throughout the day, I really owe a big thanks to Bella Zanesco for teaching me the finer details of hobie skippering. Whilst I think I'm a good sailor/racer, I am completely self taught and have never had a coach until Bella Zanesco hopped on with me this weekend. Between advanced tactics, guarding, positioning, and manouevering techniques it was like drinking from a fire hose and I can only hope to remember a fraction of what she taught me this weekend. Sunday's conditions involved medium wind with high wind gusts into the upper 20s knot ranges. As always on lake Cootharaba, the velocity difference between the lulls and gusts can take you by surprise! Several cats capsized on day 2, however MORE NACRAS THAN HOBIES CAPSIZED helping to prove we've got something right! Due to the high winds, many boats (including myself) suffered from breakages. That said, things can also go wrong -- in the first race Dave Chester and Liam Harding made a giant comeback from last place. However, from misreading the start boat flags, they turned around and did a fourth lap to find out they only needed to do three and got last place of the remaining boats. When asked about this, Dave Chester stated "it ruined him for the rest of the day". As for Carmen and Evie, they sailed a great regatta despite being easily the lightest team and not having much weight to throw around given the wind speed. Unfortunately they went for the inevitable swim in Sunday's high winds. Lastly, I would like to thank Lachlan Macfarlane for his continued support to the fleet during this weekend. Behind the scenes he generously helped many competitors to find nearby accomodation for the event and help us get more boats on the water. Please give him a shout out when you see him next!
