25.01.2022 Kids and teenagers that I see often have no idea about what I do as a psychologist and what to expect from coming to see me. Helping them understand how a psychologist work can be beneficial for the progress of their therapeutic journey. Andrew Chua, a fellow psychologist made these awesome postcards that are perfect for starting that conversation with older kids and teenagers. #andrewchua.com

22.01.2022 Does your child have a hard time managing his/her emotions? Self-regulation is the ability to understand and manage one’s behaviour and reactions to feelings and things happening. 22.01.2022 Anxiety is a natural human emotion and a normal reaction to life’s stresses. However, anxiety becomes a problem (disorder) when: it is so intense that it interferes with a child’s usual activities or ability to function socially, academically, physically, or emotionally.... it lasts for a long time each time or it’s hard to talk your child out of it. it starts to affect the daily activities of the family (e.g. you find the family avoiding going to certain places). Or, the family has to frequently adapt or make changes to help manage the anxiety of the child (e.g. the family has to stick to a strict routine so the child does not have a melt down). Talk to a qualified health professional for some coping strategies for your child and parenting resources to help manage the anxiety.

21.01.2022 Did you know that anxiety is one of the most common reasons why children and adolescents come for counselling treatment? I will be dedicating my posts in the next few days on providing some psycho-education on anxiety. Anxious behaviour in children is not uniform. It can manifest in a multitude of forms. The outward behaviour is like the tip of the iceberg. There are layers of emotions and experiences underlying the observable behaviour. Part of treatment often include some psycho education for the child and/or parent to help them understand why anxiety manifests in these ways. Picture from GoZen

12.01.2022 Here is a book that parents can use to start a conversation about anxiety with their children. In my opinion, I think this book suits kids who are 8 and up. It provides a simple scientific explanation of how anxiety forms itself in a part of the brain called the amygdala, and it takes you on a journey about what happens in your body when it is going through anxiety. The story likens the amygdala to a protective friend or a super hero which makes it relatable and easy for kids to understand.

12.01.2022 Have you recently had a conversation with your child/children about online safety? Online safety education should start at a young age to set up a foundation for safer experiences and interactions. Playing It Safe is a great interactive resource for parents and educators to use with younger children. It was developed in partnership by the Australian Federal Police, the eSafety Commissioner, and the Alannah & Madeline Foundation. https://playingitsafe.org.au/

12.01.2022 Unfortunately, negative attitudes and beliefs toward people who common. Stigma can lead to discrimination. Discrimination may be obvious and direct, such as someone making a negative remark about your mental illness or your treatment. Or it may be unintentional or subtle, such as someone avoiding you because the person assumes you could be unstable, violent or dangerous due to your mental illness. You may even judge yourself. Some of the harmful effects of stigma can include...: Reluctance to seek help or treatment Lack of understanding by family, friends, co-workers or others Fewer opportunities for work, school or social activities or trouble finding housing Bullying, physical violence or harassment Health insurance that doesn't adequately cover your mental illness treatment The belief that you'll never succeed at certain challenges or that you can't improve your situation.
