24.01.2022 New horse for training - Kaboo, young Arabian gelding. Labelled as dangerous on the ground. Currently very undernourished and badly needing weight put back on. Ive just been working on basic groundwork and habituation to bridle, rugs, handling. Today was the third session, and his second time lunging, and Im very happy to say hes progressing very quickly. So far I havent seen any dangerous behaviour, in fact hes very quiet, just a little unsure of the unrugging proces...s (synthetic doona rug is a little swishy for him). Putting it on and doing up the straps he is fine about. Video and more pics to come soon...

24.01.2022 Very sad day..... Companion Gelding available to loving home: * 14.2hh Anglo Gelding located at the Central Coast NSW * 13 years... * Not for riding due to injury (he does not require any medication though) * Beautiful sweet nature and gets along with all horses he ever met and loves pats and scratches * Must go to horsey home who will continue to feed and care for him with regular worming, hoof trims etc. * I must be able to inspect the property and meet the new owner/s as I love him to bits but cant afford agistment for a horse Im not riding (he was a super dressage horse before injury stopped his career). * Please contact me via PM or on 0401840078 if youre interested. 24.01.2022 Great article, not just about rearing. The last sentence says it all!

23.01.2022 Test Result in for 2A - so excited, we got 63.39%!!! Not bad for a bit of a rush job! This pony has soooo much to offer, and a great future ahead of her. If youre interested in looking at her to buy ($4,500 neg to a super home) or lease please contact me on 0401840078. https://youtu.be/5fKgV7XtDqk

22.01.2022 Tilly started learning to jump this weekend! First time in the proper jumps arena today. As Tills is quite a hot little thing we start out trotting over very small cross rails, stopping on the landing side as soon as we can. This is an extremely effective way to stop horses rushing at jumps, and also therefore often jumping flat. We pretty quickly got to cantering over some small jumps (45cm) without the need to stop.... (This technique is not my own, it is something I picked up from Andrew McLeans lessons, articles and books). https://youtu.be/1b9l9YRhGNc

21.01.2022 Some memories from 2011, what an amazing horse she was - Diva, 75% Arab I think, from memory, never had her papers. Dream horse - one I sold but shouldnt have! Shed be 23 by now, Im sure shes going strong. I have lost touch with the lovely woman that bought her (from Braidwood) but I think its time to see if I can find them .

21.01.2022 I cant believe Tills looks like this after clipping!! Bella clipped her yesterday and shes this lovely colour!

21.01.2022 First Novice (2A) test for Tilly! Ive just submitted this for marking so I dont know my score yet but its not perfect so Im not expecting a great result. I had to submit it a bit before I was really ready because Im moving the horses (yes, again!) on Friday and had no other day to film it (thank you Bella). Its just over one year since Tilly came off the truck site unseen from VIC on the 7th May 2019, all fluffy and out of work. Shes been a real challenge along th...e way - was really anxious about being ridden at first, jogging in walk, trying to spin around at any moment, jumping around on the spot, tossing her head constantly and stopping when you applied any leg aid! It was recommended to me more than once that I should drug her just to ride her. I stuck with my gut instinct and kept up with my training, and now shes just an absolute delight to ride, love this pony so much! https://youtu.be/5fKgV7XtDqk

19.01.2022 Ive seen this before, but it is hilarious !

19.01.2022 Horse Catching Technique - Free Demo Day today! So today I went out to make sure I could catch some notoriously difficult horses and ponies, I wanted to test my technique (yep, I was a bit nervous I wouldnt pull it off!). It all went to plan, Ive realised theres a pattern of behaviour with these horses, and reactions to what I do, and the outcomes, are very similar in every case.... Im now offering this service at a cost of $40, If youd like book in for assistance with your horse or pony (Central Coast, Sydney or Hunter only) please get in touch. Im also planning on getting a full demo video done as an alternative, watch for updates . This guy (Derek) was a super student, very keen to learn, be like Derek! . The first part of the video shows the pony the first time the owner went to catch her, 2nd part shows him in the last stage of learning the technique and catching the pony, 3rd part shows the after of teaching a bay gelding to be caught, he was very determined not be caught to begin with but unfortunately I didnt capture that on video. https://youtu.be/NPuQBEyFWWo

19.01.2022 Kaboo Update Anyone whos interested in the progress and story of the grey Arab Im training, Ive found out who bred him and who his sire is, see pic below. Im very excited about what hes going to become....

15.01.2022 This looks like so much fun, and love that the whole gang comes along! https://www.facebook.com/1896305153989181/posts/2813231712296516/?vh=e

14.01.2022 Kaboo - Update 18th Aug 2020. Hes been with me for 10 days, and just starting to really settle and improve. I thought Id be riding him by now but he was super scared to start with. As you can see on this video, Im teaching him to lunge (and earlier to lead, not included on the video) calmly. He started out the session trying to nip me in frustration a lot, but by the end the tension (and therefore the nipping also) was gone. I dont use side reins or any gadgets because I ...want to see where he puts his head naturally: note the high, tense and flexed outwards posture to start with, gradually progressing to low, steady and flexed inwards posture? The snorting towards the end is a sign of relaxation too. I would expect him to take less and less time to go through these stages as his training progresses. Note also that I dont start lunging until the horse walks calmly on the lead, and can stop, go, step back and park (doesnt move when I step away, waits for cue to walk on or step back) https://youtu.be/e3g7MKNcWvQ

14.01.2022 Love this, especially the part at the end about finding the right horse, Maree refers to a young horse here, but it can be any horse, and to me they all become the right horse

14.01.2022 I recently had to forgo a new float Id ordered due to the lockdown measures affecting my employment. I ended up having my old float resprayed, plus got a few extra things done. The cost for all of the work was very very reasonable and the people were so enthusiastic about the job, they were so excited about my pink float! I cant thank them or promote their business enough! Thank you so much KGB Coatings! https://www.facebook.com/KgbCoatingsSiteServices/... https://kgbgroup.com.au/

13.01.2022 Attention Pony Clubbers on the Central Coast and surrounding areas: I am available for lessons in line with the new Pony Club training syllabus, as per this article. I have been using an Equitation Science basis for my own, and client horses, for almost 10 years, and am now working towards my Diploma with ESI. Lesson rates are very reasonable and as a bonus you can get a video of your lessons in many cases to assist with your learning.... https://horsesandpeople.com.au/future-proofing-pony-club-/

13.01.2022 What a great idea! Would really help anyone who struggles with keeping their hands steady, even and in the right place, which in turn would benefit the horse!

13.01.2022 Chase - Lameness update: The vet came on Friday and took some x-rays, he confirmed Chase has mild (thank goodness!) navicular syndrome (see here for info https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navicular_syndrome). Ive decided to have his shoes taken off and enlisted a very experienced barefoot trimmer to oversee his treatment. After doing quite a bit of reading I think that trying to fix him this way is right, rather than corrective shoeing.... The vet also recommended giving Chase Epitalis (4Cyte) treatment, hes about 13-14, so probably a good idea regardless, and will stay on this ongoing. I wont be riding or working Chase until after the barefoot trimmer comes this Friday and gives me his recommendation.

13.01.2022 Tilly has started jump training! What a little star! Currently for sale: https://horsezone.com.au//Super_Allround_Pony_Mare_13hh.ht

13.01.2022 Online dressage test submission for Tilly today - her first ever competition , Prelim 1A. https://youtu.be/NRNTg0tQ6rU

11.01.2022 Kaboo - Update 8th August 20 Hes just arrived at my agistment property to undergo training by me. Hes put on significant weight since I first met him, more to go.

11.01.2022 Finally starting the riding part with Kaboo! He was very anxious when he arrived two weeks ago, he has finally settled in now. I really should have had someone holding him when I did this but he was really good about it, then Emma came out to feed so got her to take a couple of short clips, combined here https://youtu.be/0yfe4bhWF0s

11.01.2022 Kaboo - Update 3rd September 20 Well I find myself re-breaking a horse when Ive never actually even done it before! Kaboo didnt really understand much when I started with him and now Ive got to riding him Ive realised he didnt really understand anything much at all. Started to go well now, teaching him stop, go, turn in walk to start with. He started to want to spin a bit when I asked for stop atctge start of this ride, a really bad and dangerous habit, so got that out of him for today.

09.01.2022 Anyone need a dressage comp fix , heres one running online. Only $25 to enter (per test too I assume), Ive entered on Tilly to do 1A. Would love to hear if anyone else enters

09.01.2022 Difficult to catch horses! Recently I went out to give demonstrations on how to catch horses that owners have difficulty with, I also wanted to test my method on more horses. My method is basically a slightly modified version of a technique described by Dr Andrew McLean in his book Academic Horse Training. My experience really confirmed how much horses respond to pressure and release and how motivated they are to be released from even slight pressures (so we can make use of t...hat motivation). Almost every horse (and yes, I easily caught all 7 of the volunteers) followed a very similar pattern of behaviour during the exercise, some took 10 seconds, the longest being about 15 mins for the first time. It doesnt seem to matter how big the paddock is either as they only ever go so far before circling back. Note that unfortunately I didnt get follow up videos on subsequent days, but my extensive experience with this technique is that the length of time it takes dramatically decreases each session, sometimes even the following session you can just walk straight up and catch them, and the maximum times should be 3-4 sessions before you can walk straight up each time (I also never hide the halter). If youre interested in the specifics of what Im doing in this video, send me a message or comment below . https://youtu.be/8vTY_yejTzg

08.01.2022 I think this short video is not only very interesting and educational in terms of hoof structure, but highlights how important it is to have a good farrier!

08.01.2022 Isnt this a super transformation by an obviously talented trainer and rider? Just goes to show you dont have to a purpose bred expensive horse to be successful and develop great horses and partnerships .

07.01.2022 Tilly - Update 21 March 2020 Tilly has come such a long way from an out of work, stressed, head-tossing little pony to a gorgeous, lovely to ride sweetheart. The way we fixed the head-tossing was all linked to control of her feet. So, every time she tossed her head, or went to do it, we slowed her down, because generally theres an associated increase in speed at the same time as the head-tossing. Youll see in the video theres a point where she almost goes to do it before a... canter transition, but we slow down, then ask for the canter again. Note that we did not lunge her and do anything else, and definitely no drugs, before riding her in this video. https://youtu.be/lnpeF2nlAlA

07.01.2022 Throwback to when Chase was fully sound . Hes such a lovely moving and talented horse, great natural cadence and a beautiful canter. Currently waiting on the vet on Friday to do some scans as hes lame in right canter.... https://youtu.be/7pjSSezfkAk

07.01.2022 Come on everyone, give Dave some love

07.01.2022 Kaboo Update - video - purebred Arabian gelding approximately 14.2hh, 7 years old - very green and can be spooky at times - labelled as dangerous by previous trainer who broke him in last year... Im taking things very slowly - at about the 5 min mark he gets a fright from a truck and falls over after going a bit hyper, we regain composure and carry on. - the lunging ends on a calm note with progress I end by putting the saddle on and tighten girth, all went well! https://youtu.be/zHvMnu87Drg

05.01.2022 Tilly - Option to part-lease / Be part of a new competition team on the Central Coast NSW! I love this pony, really dont want to sell her, so Im offering someone a great opportunity to ride and learn, without the huge commitment of horse ownership, or full lease. Heres whats on offer/conditions/cost:... - 2-4 rides per week, all in the format of lessons, at least to start with. - Tilly must stay at her agistment property in Jilliby NSW. - I will remain responsible/oversee feeding, farrier, veterinary etc. and all day to day care. - All gear and tack provided and floating to outings. - Capable riders only, preferably someone familiar with Riding Ponies, shes just too sensitive and forward for beginners, but has no vices. - Im looking for someone who wants to learn and is at least a little competitive because I want to start a little Dresage/Show Team . - Cost is $70 per week all inclusive, no more to pay. Call Rachael on 0401840078 to discuss. Please share this post to your networks lovely people !

Im excited to finally be doing the Equitation Science Diploma, written and run by Equitation Science International (same authors) and available on their website. . https://www.facebook.com/equitationscienceinternational/
