20.01.2022 @mitstennis athletes Ryan & Manos working on their lateral movements & ability to transfer energy/force (utilising momentum) with the one of my favourite lateral movements especially for racquet sports - #KBLateralSwing. Too often in S&C we see athletes only training within the Sagittal plane (forward & backwards) despite most sports demanding movement sufficiency across ALL planes of movement (sagittal, transverse, frontal). A single directional/dimensional training mi...ndset will result in a single directional/dimensional athlete and to reach the elite level for majority of sports, that just won’t cut it. It’s been a good while since going 1 v 1 with the bar, missed it! - #Squat: 140KG x 5 - #RDL: 100KG x 5... - Developing a foundation of strength is the most critical component to developing all other athletic fitness components. You can do all the plyometrics, power, speed or agility work you want but at the end of the day if your base level of strength is poor then the MOST OPTIMAL way to get more athletic (and better at your sport) is to first get stronger. - A good strength benchmark to aim for is being able to squat & deadlift 2x your bodyweight for a single rep, these are staple patterns, you will see colossal positive affects to performance by building on these... Just recognise & observe. Reflect on something you are grateful for in your life today no matter how small. Hold a big smile for 20-seconds and try not to laugh at yourself! ... How do you feel now? 14.01.2022 Last session before first pro race of 2021 in Geelong this weekend, I’m entered into the 70m open & 100m gift. I haven’t timed anything in training not even once, I have no idea how fast I am against time, my approach was to prioritise polishing & perfecting my mechanics irrespective of times - Thank you to coach Alwyn from @aj_ssquad & @athsessendon for working with me & helping me do just that! There’s this feeling of euphoria I get from running at TOP end speed, it last...s between 5 - 7 fully present seconds and it’s the closest thing I’d imagine to what flying feels like. 12.01.2022 GRAPPLERS / FIGHTERS Do you know if your strength & conditioning training outside of the cage / mat is eliciting peak performance or impeding it? #BJJ athletes move through a wide variety of movement planes & patterns when they compete, so it’s absolutely imperative that they train the same way! Strength qualities to consider for development: Power (takedowns), rotational capacity & range of motion (escaping/movement) along with static strength, (submissions, holding, g...rip strength) Given the demanding nature of their sport while they’re on the mat (maximal resistance/constant time under tension) training volume in the gym should be kept low whilst the intensity stays high in order to avoid unnecessary hypertrophy and overtraining. Athletes of the martial arts should be as strong and powerful as possible relative to bodyweight. : If you can’t identify the sport through the drill it’s likely not specific enough. If you’re an aspiring athlete shift your perspective from fitness to S&C and you’ll start training instead of exercising. They’re not the same world. (Same, same but different!) 12.01.2022 Football-Specific Conditioning - It’s easy to get caught up continuously running long distances thinking this will benefit your game. Whilst this will increase your overall stamina and work capacity, it only trains the one energy system (aerobic energy system) meaning you will still find yourself gassing out with ‘jelly legs’ (weak lactic acid energy system) after repeated effort sprints. #Football is a sport that requires all three energy systems to be strong so it’s impo...rtant to train them accordingly. - X-DRILL QUEUES: - 1 Set varying timed intervals between 15s - 30s. - 2 Begin at middle (orange) cone. Take off in any direction keeping the ball close at all times. - 3 Get around as many white cones as possible returning to the middle cone each time. - 4 When the timer goes off, sprint for 10m in whichever direction you are facing. - A simple but effective drill for footballers whilst in isolation & training solo with limited equipment. Regardless of the training method, quality of programming, intensity of training or adherence to diet the fact of the matter is CONSISTENCY is the key player when it comes to physique progression and athletic development.
