22.01.2022 As we age and gave many years to learning, we learn about ourselves and our peers. Sadly this new cyber culture of everything previously taught by masters or craftsmen and women from all cultures and their historical art is dying and only re emerging in this medium by those who are claiming to be proficient in it. A message given by media is incomplete. Therefore I say sincerely the lesson by on line teaching is diluted to a point it is meaningless with many arts. Please consider real art to cyber learning

21.01.2022 Here is a lovely recent photo of my Iaido Sensei and kaicho, in his home in Ise Japan. I first met him in 1986. We were both much younger then.

21.01.2022 http://www.seiburyu.com/history.html. Please see link above. The founder of Hokushin Shino Ryu (Soke) was Menkyo Kaiden in both Hokushin Ittoh ryu and Shinto Ryu. His teacher in Shinto Ryu was the famous Hibano Raifu Masayoshi. This article is about him and a school descended from his teachings, his swordsmanship and Kenbu, Shigen, and Shibu .

14.01.2022 A novice enters a monastery prepared for some serious theological instruction only to discover that every monk in the institution has been given permission to strike or kick him not only at will, but at the most unexpected times, and in the most unlikely places. He may be walking in the garden, or working, or eating, or even sitting in the privy, when suddenly a passing monk may strike him. The blows are hard and so randomly delivered and from such a variety of ... sources, that the novice, disheartened and battered by what seems to be perpetual hazing, quickly doubts that he will survive his freshman year - or even the first l/12th of it. Since he cannot initiate an attack, he finds himself in a curious situation: before he can counter a strike, he must first be able to block it - and this, as yet, he lacks the skill to do. Unfortunately, he possesses no firearms. Inside or out of a monastery, the best way to deal with a problem is, of course, to avoid it; and the novice quickly learns how to determine when a strike is imminent. He studies the approaching monk. Is his expression different just before he actually strikes from the way it is when he passes without striking? When he does strike, will it be from the right or left? With fist or open hand? From above or below? Will the blow be a kick? From which direction? What balancing movements will the monk make before he kicks? At what precise point is the monk looking when he strikes? The novice becomes extremely observant and soon compiles a compendium of the most incredibly subtle mannerisms about his potential attackers. No nuance goes unnoticed. He has no choice in this: he cannot maintain the tension of constant alarm. A warning siren that doesn't cease, ceases to be a warning siren. All animals have an attack mode, attitude, or poise; and humans, being members of the animal kingdom, share this behavioral trait. Discretion is still the better part of valor; and an accurate reading of a potential opponent's intentions is better than a constant state of Code Red readiness. So the novice submits to a training game, a contest of wits which requires enormous concentration; and concentration, as we know, is the first step in meditation. It is at this point that the path of the merely skillful diverges from the masterful. The sine qua non of the true martial artist is his peaceful demeanor and peace, as it happens, is Buddhism's most vaunted state. While Buddhists do not hold universal patent rights on Peacefulness, if any one group can be said to revel in it, to prize it more highly than any other state, Buddhists are that group. Zen Buddhists, be they martial artists of the most deadly and consummate skill, are nothing if not tranquil.

11.01.2022 Zen is all very academic but as you get older sitting in the traditional postures hurts!

09.01.2022 Iaido is as much about management of timing and your space or Ma as it is about skill with the sword. Because it is practiced solo this is not understood by spectators but advanced students are aware of this very integral aspect of iaido. Not to Have Touh Ma and to launch a cut attack is tantamount to suicide as Teki will retaliate and will cut you.

04.01.2022 Ban Naoyuki, The Ghost Catcher! When Ban Naoyuki was in the employ of Fukushima Masanori and based at Hiroshima Castle, there was a story going around that one ...of the toilets within the castle was haunted. Samurai using the toilet had heard strange noises from within, others claimed to have had something touch their behinds as they did their business. For those reasons, may of the samurai of Hiroshima refused to use the latrine. Ban Naouyuki was not afraid of ghosts, and boldly told all so! In the haunted loo one evening while taking a dump, a gnarled, blackened hand rose from the depths and patted his bum. Grabbing the hand and pulling, Ban dragged the ghost,... a small monkey ...from the toilet. Everyone in the castle was "relieved", but Ban told them, "Don't tell people I caught a monkey,...Tell them I caught a ghost!"

04.01.2022 We are all getting old, can we pass this important cultural art and Batton on to future students? Show your interest by answering this call?
