25.01.2022 A home is more than just four walls and a roof, a home provides safety and security, something that many may take for granted. Today marks the start of Homeless...ness Week, an important national annual event to shine a light on homelessness, to learn from the voices of people with lived experience of homelessness and collectively reflect on what we need to do to change perceptions and stigmas to end homelessness. For more information on responding to and preventing homelessness in Western Australia and to read Western Australia’s 10-Year Strategy on Homelessness 20202030, visit https://www.communities.wa.gov.au/st/homelessness-strategy/ #HW2020

24.01.2022 Last Friday, Indigo Junction's Women's art program held a 'deadly denim' workshop which saw ladies attending the program hand-make some creative tote bags using recycled denim jeans and Aboriginal textiles. 19.01.2022 This Christmas, you can make a real difference right here in the local Western Australian community by giving the gift of a Christmas lunch to someone doing it tough. Indigo Junction currently have 31 adults and 58 children residing in our family service, 15 young people in our youth service and hundreds more people experiencing or at risk of homelessness who we assist through our community service, Karnany Resource Centre. Our goal is to provide Christmas lunch for everyo...ne in our services and to ensure that every child has a present to open Christmas morning. It will cost $25 per person for Christmas lunch and presents will be purchased to the value of $30 for every child. If you would like to support this cause, please make a donation today.

18.01.2022 Indigo Junction would like to say a big Thank You to The Theodore & Isabella Wearne Charitable Trust who provided a grant to help furnish a house for an unwell grandmother who has two children in her care. Prior to this assistance the lady and her granddaughters were sleeping and eating on the floor, and sadly many support organisations were unable to supply second hand goods due to COVID-19 restrictions. We would also like to thank Amart Furniture for discounting these items and supporting the local community.

17.01.2022 It's Anti-Poverty Week (11-17 October), a time for us all to reflect on the more than 3.24 million people (13.6% of the population) living below the poverty line in Australia. That includes 774,000 children or more than 1 in 6. Many of those affected are living in deep poverty, on average $282 a week below the poverty line. ANU researchers have estimated that the temporary COVID-19 Supplement payments introduced in response to the COVID-19 pandemic have reduced the number of ...people in poverty by 13% to 2.6 million. However by December 2020, the reductions in income supports announced in July are estimated to increase poverty by one third to 3.5 million. Australia is a wealthy country and we believe Australian's should not have to skip meals and necessary medications to put a roof over their and their children's heads. By doing so this not only affects the health of many Australian's both physically and mentally however also adds pressure and expenses to our health system. Let's be proactive not reactive ... #raisetherate #apw2020

11.01.2022 Indigo Junction are currently recruiting for our Family and Youth Services casual relief pool to assist with case management and intensive support for young people and families located in our crisis and transitional accommodation. 09.01.2022 That's right.., Indigo Junction officially opened it's doors to provide crisis accommodation in 1980 and has been doing some pretty amazing things in the local community ever since! It all started with the founding committee of Indigo Junction (then known as Swan Emergency Accommodation (SEA)) acquiring its first house for families, youth, and single adults in crisis over 40 years ago. They named this house ‘The Junction’ which became the subject of an intensive community ca...mpaign in the form of working bees, furniture, and monetary donations to prepare for its opening in 1980. From 1980 until 1982, the shelter operated with a live-in caretaker, volunteers from the committee and assistance from community organisations. Since then Indigo Junction has grown to provide crisis accommodation, transitional accommodation, one-on-one client support, emergency relief, financial counselling plus its many support programs. We really couldn't be more proud of our organisation, our committed staff and the amazing community who support us so that we can ultimately assist the real beneficiaries, families and individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

08.01.2022 You may have heard the State Government announce a moratorium on evictions last month as a result of COVID-19. We’ve got a few quick answers for you on common q...uestions about this! 1. How long does the moratorium last? The moratorium lasts six months, starting March 30th and ending on 29 September 2020. This period may change, depending on the COVID-19 situation in Western Australia. 2. Do I still have to pay rent? Yes, you must still pay your rent if you are able. The moratorium on evictions does not mean a moratorium on rent! Any unpaid rent during the moratorium may be due in full at the end of the moratorium. However, your landlord can’t increase your rent, charge interest on arrears, or move to evict you if you can’t pay rent due to COVID-19. 3. What if I can’t pay my rent? If you cannot pay your rent, contact your landlord or real estate agent as soon as you can. You may be able to defer rent payments, negotiate a rent decrease, or end your lease without penalty if your landlord agrees. Make sure you get any agreement in writing. You may be eligible for a Residential Rent Relief Grant if you lost your job on or after 20 March 2020 and are facing financial hardship. If you need advice and information on your tenancy, you can contact Tenancy WA on www.tenancywa.org.au or on 9221 0088. 4. Can I be evicted for anything at all? There are some small exceptions to evictions. You can still be evicted if you are causing damage to the property, posing a threat to others, or refuse to pay rent if your ability to pay has not been affected by COVID-19. 5. What else does this mean for me as a renter? If your tenancy was a fixed term agreement and expires during the moratorium, it will continue as a period agreement. Tenants can also end fixed-term tenancies before their end date without a break lease fee. Your landlord will also not be required to conduct any non-urgent repairs during the moratorium to minimise contact and support social distancing. More information on the Evictions Moratorium, rent relief options, and advice is available on www.commerce.wa.gov.au//residential-tenancies-covid-19-res #RetainTheRate

05.01.2022 Homelessness is a worldwide issue, and sadly right here in Australia we know that over 116,000 people don't have a place to call home. Last year Indigo Junction undertook it's own Connections Week to help build a profile of the picture of homelessness in Midland by exploring the themes of health, justice, risk and vulnerability. The Evaluation Report on the data gathered information on 149 people experiencing homelessness in Midland including 52 children. It was identified ...that families make up 27% of Midland’s homeless compared to just 2% in Perth and 7% in Fremantle, and of the families identified in Midland 92% are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. Indigo Junction is continually evolving our programs and services through co-design to meet the needs of the community. 01.01.2022 It’s hard to believe Christmas was over 7 weeks ago, yet as we sit and reflect on our annual Christmas party we would like to thank West Perth Football Club and atWork Australia for gifting presents to the 90 children who are currently being supported through Indigo Junction’s family service. Each child had a beaming smile from ear to ear as Santa handed out presents and they opened their gift on the day. We would also like to thank Fairy Sally and Fairy Bec from Freedom Fa...iries for sprinkling their Christmas cheer to all and using their face painting talents to brighten the faces of children and adults alike. Christmas wouldn’t be complete without a feast so a massive shout out and thank you to Baldja and Kardan Construction for kindly donating towards the food and providing catering on the day. Everyone had a fantastic day and it’s safe to say everyone left the party feeling content and their bellies full. Help us say thank you - like, comment and share our donors pages and together lets support the organisations that support our community.
