25.01.2022 When clients ask me to proofread or copyedit something for them, I see THIS all the time Yes, THIS. What is THIS?... Well, it’s entire sentences or phrases written like THIS ...all in capital letters. It doesn’t look right It doesn’t feel right And it sure doesn’t make me wanna read it I know why clients do it. In fact, I know why we all do it Confession - even I used to do it Sssssshhhhhhhh Don’t tell anyone. So why do we do it It’s all about grabbing your attention It’s attention seeking behaviour Which is totally fine when you’re writing about your business, brand and products. You should be out to grab our attention B-u-u-t, it kinda has the opposite effect. Let me explain. Writing sentences entirely in capital letters - reduces reading speed by 10% (our audience want info and they want it now) and - makes the reader feel like they’re being shouted at (and nobody likes that) Good news though. There are plenty of ways to grab your reader’s attention without resorting to capital letters You can write short sentences. use commas and full stops to build tension use emotive language leave lots of white space around the sentence you want to draw attention to. (You can then use these words in your website copy and on social media posts) Copy and paste lots of (positive) customer reviews or testimonials into ‘Wordcloud’ (link below) Hit ‘Generate’ Wordcloud then selects the most commonly used words and creates a pretty word picture The more often a word is used, the bigger it appears in your Word Cloud For example if customers consistently praise you for being ‘reliable’ - the word reliable will appear big and bold in your Word Cloud Confused? 03.01.2022 #intro Hey you How’s things?... If we’ve not met yet, just thought I’d introduce myself. I’m Jen. I’m a copywriter and I live in Perth, WA Originally from bonnie Scotland, we made the move here 6 years ago. I count this as one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my life. It was soul shattering. Broken hearts were everywhere. I felt monstrous. (taking grandchildren away) It’s a beautiful lifestyle ...but I miss my family. Like we all do at the mo’ I guess. ~Deep breath~ But, it was the right thing to do for us. And the healing continues. Ok, so... My background is in broadcasting. I had my own show on a commercial radio station. It was freakin awesome. Yep, I got paid to talk for a living. Dream job for chatterbox Jen. I got to host spectacular events. I chatted to Ed Sheeran when he was a bit overwhelmed by all the folks who’d rocked up to see him at our radio studio. I wrote the scripts. I hit the buttons on the desk which fired the tunes across Ayrshire. It was magic. When we moved to Perth I returned to my first love - writing. I joined a few networking groups as ‘a writer’ *crickets Haha People were like Oh, you write books? I’m like, well not right now but I will. Businesses started asking me to write things for their websites and blogs and award entries..etc I met tonnes of cool folk who new about marketing, designing, seo.
