25.01.2022 Our take on school readiness... . Whilst counting to 100 is indeed impressive for a 3-4 year old, im more concerned with the more practical elements of being... school ready. . Heres whyBeing independent in the more practical tasks such as zipping up their coat or recognising belongings will help a child to transition smoothly from home life to school. With reception classes often hitting the full capacity of 30 pupils, teachers and their classroom assistants cannot be expected to tie up 30 pairs of shoelaces or open 30 packed lunches.* If we think about it logically for a second, the children who need this assistance often end up waiting longer to go out and play or eat their lunch, purely because the teacher needs to do it for them. . As a teacher and mama to three, I have come to understand what school readiness should mean from both sides. My eldest is now in his final year of elementary school and my middle child will be starting school next September. As a result, Ive really been reflecting on what is actually useful. . In short, I truly believe that school readiness should mean developing independence. Being able to open lunch, tie shoelaces and find their own coat, will help boost their confidence and allow them to focus on the true purpose of school hopefully that will mean heaps of learning through play! . Ive broken down this guide into 9 general sections with advice on how to tackle each step - you can read the full feature by clicking the link in my profile. . See more

24.01.2022 THE NO TUB Something weve used for a long time, when the temptations of all the no objects get a little too much! . The no tub is personal to each child... - anything that you find yourself saying no to them having, place in a tub and make them as safe as possible for baby to explore - eg. Wind up cables and put masking tape around them, remove batteries from remotes, use an old phone, clean keys etc . The idea is to take the power out of these objects that babies become obsessed over, because they hold a lot of power through curiosity! Babies want to explore everything - its only natural that the things we wont let them explore, drive more curiosity. . People often as me how I deal with a baby and an open art area (for example), but the truth is - the art area has become so normal, because its there all the time, that she doesnt obsess over the things in it - most of the time, she doesnt even go there! Im using the same concept with this tub - make exciting things into normal things . This activity is great for: Curiosity - they get to explore things that are new and exciting, in a safe way Fine motor skills - manipulating the objects Normalising everyday objects . . *** if you are using objects that pose a safety risk, make sure you are supervising closely and remove those objects if you leave the room . . . #everydayplayhacks #playislearning #teachermum #playmatters #reggiokids #diymum #childhoodunplugged #playbasedlearning #toddleractivitiesathome #sensoryplayideas #toddlerplay #preschoolplay #babyplayideas #playathome #stayathomemum #playathomemummy #preparedplay #homeschoolaustralia #montessoriathome #followthechild #babyplay #montessoribaby #instamum #reggioinspired #playbased #diybabytoys #babyplayspace #babysensory #babyplayhacks #babyactivitiesathome

18.01.2022 This activity was a spontaneous one made up by Miss C. She asked me to draw a cupcake with chips meaning choc chips of course (it was a quick sketch, I know I cant draw ) She walked off and brought over the spot stickers and started adding them to the chips to make them colourful. Even though this activity only lasted roughly 2 minutes and only 3 spots were added, this creative and spontaneous activity blended learning and play into each other. *fine motor skills- using her little fingers to peel off and place the stickers *recognises similarities- the chips are same shape as stickers *recognising an amount- can tell there is an amount of choc chips on the cupcake *development of knowledge, skills and problem solving - Cognitive development ||JTB @ Sydney, Australia

02.01.2022 Dear parents, Have you heard of "Baby listening" or "Dunstan baby language"? Allow me to inform you a little more about it. ... When you have a newborn baby they come into this world unfortunately with no instruction manual! They cry to tell you what is going because it is their only known way to communicate but unfortunately with no instruction manual we don't always understand what they are crying for! As parents we get taught to go through the basic checklist in our head... are they tired? Hungry? Do they need a nappy change or clothes change? Are they in pain? But it would be nice if it would be easier right? I was introduced to being able to understand the communication messages behind babies cries over a decade ago. I was hesitant to believe in it at first but after listening to babies cry I can pick up the 5 unique sounds that every newborn makes and know what they are needing. Honestly! I will be in the shops and hear a baby cry aisles away and can hear the sound and often have to hold myself back from wandering over and tapping the parent on the shoulder to give them a hand with what the baby is wanting and passing on these skills. So these sounds are made by NEWBORNS and UP TO 3/6 MONTHS OLD. Learning these tips are excellent whilst still expecting but honestly they are so easy to pick up once you know what to look out for. When a newborn or young baby cries their cries will make one of these 5 unique sounds. Next time you hear your baby cry, especially if you do know its almost feed time etc listen out for the cry. Even get on you tube and search "Baby cues OR baby language" or even search the type of cry listed below. * NEH - Hungry * EH - Burp me * OWH - Sleepy * EAIRH - Tummy pain * HEH - Discomfort (Might be hot/cold/dummy is poking into their head when laying in the cot) If you use these skills already please feel free to leave a comment or send me a message based on your experiences. Also feel free to share this post with anyone you know with a newborn/expecting a baby. Claire - CLH Nannies
