23.01.2022 Are you getting the SUI you need? Obtaining incorrect Subsurface Utility Information (SUI) can result in significant costs for your Project. To ensure high quality, useable data, JFP undertakes our Surveys in line with'AS5488-Classification of Subsurface Utility Information’ (SUI). SUI surveys are most accurate and efficient when using a combination of methods, including plotting services from records, logging visible evidence, as well as working with Underground Service Loc...ators utilising Electronic Tracing; Ground Penetrating Radar and/or Vacuum Excavation. The standard categories SU Information in descending order as follows: - QUALITY LEVEL A (QL-A): positive identification and absolute spatial positioning in three dimensions. - QUALITY LEVEL B (QL-B): Relative subsurface feature location in three dimensions (eg Electronic Tracing). - QUALITY LEVEL C (QL-C): Approximate location using a combination of existing records and accurate survey of visible evidence. - QUALITY LEVEL D (QL-D): Compiled from existing records, site inspections, anecdotal evidence. With decades of experience, JFP always aims to find the right balance between costs and locational accuracy when it comes to SUI surveys. We begin by locating contours and visible features on site which are then compared to As-Constructed records to produce an approximate services map (QL-C). From this, your Design team can determine potential clashes of proposed services with existing SUI. Where identified, further investigations to capture higher quality SUI (QL-A or QL-B) can then be undertaken. It’s important to understand the costs and risks associated with capturing Subsurface Utility Information. No one wants to see money go down the drain!
