24.01.2022 ‘The last action’, 2020. Graphite on paper. 56 x 76cm This is a drawing of Kerley’s Auction House in Geelong which held its last auction in March this year after more than a century of operating (1910-2020). It’s one of the few artworks I worked on this year and spent most of that time thinking it had gone for good and working on it accordingly. ... Like many small (and large) businesses, and many individual people’s lives, Kerley’s was affected by the Covid Pandemic and seemed to close its iconic doors for the last time this year. Fortunately, it has recently reopened and adapted to survive under a slightly different model and name, but it is largely the same. I grew up being dragged to and around ‘Kerley’s’ with my grandparents as a young kid and like most things, I eventually came full-circle and visited the viewing and auction days as a teenager and as an adult, realising it was a great place to wander and inspect the lost and the found; and the trash and the treasure, if you had a bit of spare-time in ‘town’. In many ways it is a nostalgic place, and it’s a nostalgic image in my mind. It reminds me of times I visited there and of people and the past. It was and remains a large part of the town in which I was born. It also reminds me of a bygone era and stands as a symbol for a time when things seemed slower, more thoughtful, sincere and friendlier. Even though Kerley’s rooms’ are always cluttered and busy, it reminds me of a time when there was just less stuff and more space in the world. It’s sad when traditions and artisans (like this) are threatened and forced to evaporate and disappear into oblivion.
