01.01.2022 Today we look back at the life and times of a quiet achiever - an Aussie woman not afraid to have a go, a woman who stared a challenge in the eye and smiled, a ...woman who put the needs of others ahead of her own and - as can be seen from these incredible pics, a woman who got the job done no matter what! 21st century truckies - male AND female - in fact, the entire nation have afforded Toots Holzheimer legendary status - an honour she would’ve laughed at I’m sure!! Incredibly, Toots clocked up more than 1.6 million kilometres hauling freight along the dusty, corrugated roads of remote Queensland driving through some of the States most inhospitable terrain up on Cape York Peninsula. She delivered freight to the northern tip of Australia for over thirty years, servicing her own trucks, loading them by hand (no forklifts in the early days), and then driving for hours and hours on roads that could not be called roads. She battled corrugation, washouts, melon holes and bull-dust to get the freight through, digging her way out of bogs as she coaxed her Old Girl, a MAN diesel, up and down the steep, rocky slopes of the Great Dividing Range. All this was done in a world where there was no power steering, no air conditioning, no onboard fridges, no rattle guns, forklifts, satellite OR mobile phones! Devoid of any of the luxuries that are standard in 21st century trucks - in one of the toughest environments imaginable- doing one of the toughest jobs imaginable, Toots gained a reputation for being the first truck in after the wet and the last one to leave. She was also affectionately known as the Country Shopper as she’d go out of her way to purchase the little extras city folk took for granted, for the ladies on the Cape. Tragically this incredible woman was accidentally killed February 29, 1992 at Evans Landing Wharf, Weipa, when she was crushed between a tyre of her truck and a heavy pylon swinging from a crane. TootsGone but not forgotten - a true Aussie legend!
