13.01.2022 Dear Members, Please find below a tribute to Paul Greene prepared by Joanne Tyler. Paul was the publican at the Wye Beach Hotel who sadly passed away last week. Our thoughts are with his family and the many friends he had throughout our community. We thank Joanne for allowing us to share this special tribute with the Kennett River community. Paul was a great supporter of our club and contributed for many years to Summer weekly raffles.... Tribute to Paul Greene There would be few in our community who have not enjoyed a conversation with Paul Greene, the affable publican at the Wye Beach Hotel, standing at the end of the bar chatting, being made to feel welcome and valued. This role gave Paul enormous insight into our community and what makes it tick. Very sadly last week we lost Paul. After the 2015 bushfire Paul threw himself wholeheartedly into the support of our community, especially through the Community Renewal Committee (later WyeSep Kennett Renewal Association.) His outstanding capacity to build strong relationships with government and to be widely respected stood us in good stead in achieving the outcomes of the Wye Sep Kennett Renewal Plan. Paul never wanted acknowledgement, arguing that everything he did post fire was about the community and not about him. Many will not be aware of the selflessness and unstinting effort he put in to supporting community members needing assistance through ill health or advanced age. Paul was passionate about the Otways and the Otway Coast. He knew all the tracks, the history, the economics and the people. I had the enormous privilege of being Co-Chair of the Wye Sep Kennett Renewal Association with Paul. Together we negotiated and saw through to completion the Wye to Jamieson Walk, and as recently as last February signed off on the Wye to Kennett Walk, consistent with the Plan. The Walks would not have happened without Paul. Think of him when you walk them. They are built in stone so that no future fire can take them out, in sight of the sea, above the road, positioned to withstand climate change. A legacy that will never be lost. Astute, caring, compassionate, articulate, high integrity, honest, modest, highly intelligent, loyal and dependable, a pillar of our community. Paul passed away last week from cancer, and we will miss him immensely. But his impact will live on. Joanne Tyler
