23.01.2022 When Frida Kahlo was 18 years old, she was involved in a near fatal bus accident that left with a shattered spine and pelvis. During her long and painful recove...ry, Frida Kahlo took to painting. She was greatly inspired by Italian Renaissance artists such as Da Vinci, Botticelli, Bronzino and Caravaggio. Here are some of the first paintings done by Frida Kahlo. "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade."

22.01.2022 This week at the Gallery Tim and 'Tim and kelp'! Environmental activist and scientist Prof. Tim Flannery visited with artist and two-time #ArchibaldPrize fina...list Tianli Zu, stopping in to see Zu's portrait hanging in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes 2020 exhibition. The portrait 'Tim and kelp' references Flannery's ideas of using seaweed to combat climate change, with Zu saying, ‘The symbiosis between humans and the environment resonates with Eastern philosophies of human beings as part of a fragile nature. Tim is a much-needed voice of urgency. The work is a call to action, to combine creativity, science and ecological awareness. Tim says it’s a grave threat, but one that can be overcome. There is hope.’ Pictured: Tim Flannery and Tianli Zu. Artwork: Archibald Prize 2020 finalist Tianli Zu 'Tim and kelp' the artist Photos: AGNSW, Felicity Jenkins

18.01.2022 As a working class lad himself, Renoir focuses here on the carefree and joyful atmosphere of the working-class haunt of the restaurant Le Moulin de la Galette. ... There's no main character the figures represent Renoir’s circle of friends and models among the other revellers. The group in front attract our attention first, but they're also bound into the flowing rhythm of figures by the soft light and stippled glints that fall through the foliage. The figures themselves form the landscape, and Renoir clearly intended their absorption in the dance as well as the surroundings to embody the carefree and joyful atmosphere. While 'Gauguin and the Impressionists: Masterpieces from the Ordrupgaard Collection' may be sold out, you can still explore the exhibition through our virtual tour find it in our Facebook videos!

17.01.2022 Visited Canberra for the wonderful exhibition at NGA, Botticelli to Van Gogh, a must see. We called in to Dirty Janes and found an exhibit being hung by a life group from Artists Society of Canberra. Several artists with quite diverse styles, however came together beautifully. If in Canberra pop in for a look.

13.01.2022 In a remarkable discovery by our Conservation team that has solved a hundred-year-long mystery, x-ray analysis has revealed that Frederick McCubbin’s long-lost ...painting Found, 1892, is actually hidden beneath the layers of paint of his iconic work, The pioneer, 1904, one of the masterpieces of Australian Impressionism. In a uniquely 2020 moment, the painting was only discovered when NGV’s Head of Conservation Michael Varcoe-Cocks, was on his rounds checking artworks in the Gallery during the closure. When he shone his torch on The Pioneer, he noticed a curved line through the lower half, not visible in standard gallery lighting. Long thought to have been lost or destroyed, the revelation that McCubbin’s major composition Found was in fact overpainted and partly incorporated into The pioneer is one of the most important and unexpected art historical discoveries made by our Conservation team in recent years, offering a new, fascinating insight into the artistic process of this significant Australian artist and his much-loved masterpiece. 12.01.2022 Frederick William Elwell (British painter) 1870 - 1958 Bric-à-Brac, 1931 oil on canvas 91.4 x 71.1 cm. (35.98 x 27.99 in.) Usher Gallery, Lincoln, United Kingdo...m photo Usher Gallery Elwell studied art in Paris, in keeping with many British contemporaries such as the Newlyn School. The warm, dappled light that illuminates The First Born reveals his personal response to one aspect of French Impressionism. Overall, however, his realistic, technically skilled style remained constant throughout his career, during which he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy. In many ways his work continues the realism and idealisation typical of late Victorian narrative genre painting.

09.01.2022 On 24 April 1871 the Art Gallery of New South Wales began, without a collection and without a building, when a group of art-loving citizens established a so...ciety to support artists and promote knowledge and enjoyment of art in the wider community. 150 years on, after changes in name and location, we're continuing to play a vital role in the cultural life of the state and the nation. As we begin our anniversary celebrations, we hope you enjoy this trip back in time, as we share moments from the early years of the #ArtGalleryNSW. 04.01.2022 What Color Wednesday Answer! Quinacridone Rose, DANIEL SMITH Extra Fine Watercolor! https://danielsmith.com/quinacridone-rose-15ml-tube-daniel/... Quinacridone Rose, with its red-violet color, lends itself to fabulous purples. Try with Indigo for deep dusty purples, or Indanthrone Blue for rich, clear purples. Quinacridone Rose can be mixed with Quinacridone Sienna or Burnt Orange in dilute wash states to create fleshtones or convincing sunsets. Highly durable and extremely transparent, all the DANIEL SMITH Quinacridone colors excel in vivid clarity and intensity. About Daniel Smith Swatch Drawdown The Daniel Smith Drawdown is a tool used by our chemists to test the color batch in the lab before moving onto the production floor to be made. What you see on the drawdown is the paint being mixed with distilled water in a ten to one ratio (10:1). This is 10 parts distilled water by weight to one part paint. Once the paint and distilled water are mixed the chemist then loads a brush with the paint by dipping it into the mixture one time. The chemist then proceeds to do a wash on the upper portion of the drawdown. What you see is a wash completed by loading the brush only once. Next, a new brush is used and again loaded with the same mixture. The chemist then starts from the top left and makes brush lines until reaching the end of the paper which is bottom right. This gradient shows what the paint looks like from first putting it down until the point the brush is almost or fully unloaded. The paper used for drawdowns is Lana Aquarelle 140# cold-processed watercolor paper. #danielsmith #danielsmithwatercolors #danielsmithartistsmaterials #dswhatcolorwednesday #watercolor

03.01.2022 A.Y Jackson was an important founding member of the iconic and beloved Group of Seven in Toronto. But not many know that around the same time, in 1920, A.Y Jac...kson was also the president of another group of about twenty artists in Montreal called the Beaver Hall Group. What was unique about the Beaver Hall Group was that unlike the Group of Seven, it contained a large number of women artists. Beaver Hall group also brought together the Anglophone and the Francophone artists in a much divided Montreal. A.Y Jackson worked hard in bridging the gap between the Toronto and Montreal artists. He became an active mentor and main spokesperson for the group. A.Y Jackson was a native of Montreal and understood the different political sensibilities of the Montreal milieu. He didn't insist on a nationalist message but instead encouraged these young and diverse emerging artists to simply paint from their heart. Even though Beaver Hall Group was short-lived, its impact on Canadian Modernist history is monumental. Women were given a strong and equal representation as working professional artists as their male counterparts. The Montreal artists equally contributed to establish Modernist art in Canada. While the Group of Seven offered a national pride by showcasing the open Canadian landscape, the Beaver Hall group offered a much different perspective. Their works revealed that there were more than just natural landscape paintings that made up the definitive Canadian art. There were also contemporary portraits, nudes, urban landscapes, cityscapes and still life. On this day in 1882, A.Y Jackson was born and through his works and his amazing generosity towards other artists such as Tom Thompson, Emily Carr and especially the Beaver Hall group of artists, we can have an idea of how rich and multi-faceted Canadian Modern art actually is.
