25.01.2022 Our Year 1 and 2 choir have been learning some new skills and expanding their knowledge! With restrictions around singing amongst groups and choirs, our students faced a new task. Our students have been learning new songs, but not with their voices, instead they are learning new songs through Auslan. Whilst it was a challenge, all of our students loved the opportunity to learn something new. Auslan Fact: According to the National Disability Practitioners (NDP) here in Austral...ia, almost 20,000 people use Auslan to communicate everyday throughout our country. Auslan is uniquely Australian and was recognised by our government as an offical language in 1991. However, if you look further abroad, it is estimated that there 130 sign languages around the world! #kinrosswolaroischool #orangensw #visitorange #orange360 #choir #auslan #signlanguage

25.01.2022 Recently Yalari launched a painting and creative writing competition as part of Reconciliation Week and invited their students to participate. As part of their brief, they were looking for original artwork sharing culture, ceremony and spiritual belonging to country. The artwork could be about their totems, ancestral stories and myths, community, dancing, language or song lines. Students also had to provide a brief explanation of the story behind their artwork. Congratulati...ons to Chelsea Edwards who placed 2nd and to Anna Robinson who placed 3rd overall. Chelsea Edwards, Year 11: My painting tells the story of my life’s journey. In my painting it starts off with myself in my home community with my family which are the five symbols and strong cultural identity. The waves follow through to my life right now which is my education, the symbols symbolise my mother, Waverley, Llew and other Yalari staff which have and still are continuing to provide me with support. Finally, the second waves are leading to my bright future. The colours such as purple, represents the meaning of a successful life. Yellow representing happiness and green representing harmony. The symbols in the third part of my life symbolise my family, friends and career. Anna Robinson, Year 10: Meaning The painting I have created explores Family, Land and Identity. These three things are important to me as they have shaped the person I am today. My family is represented by the five hands in the middle, each hand being one of my family members. I have chosen to use the colour green on the hands as it represents family and eternity. The river running behind the hands represents a traditional landmark of Coonamble the Castlereagh River. With the dots on the painting and the painting as a whole, it explores my identity and how I am proud of who I am and where I come from. https://www.yalari.org/yalari-student-painting-competition/

23.01.2022 R U OK?Day 2020 2020 has been unlike any other year, challenging and confronting, it’s been difficult for everyone. Therefore it’s even more important for all of us to stay connected and to support those that are around us. The message for R U OK?Day 2020 is:... - There’s more to say after R U OK? - Make the time to ask the question, listen and acknowledge, encourage action and check in. A conversation could change a life. In support of R U OK? Day we have signs, posters and resources all around our school and our Support Suite will be turned yellow for the day! Whilst today is R U OK Day, we have to remember that every day is a good day to ask someone R U OK? #kinrosswolaroischool #orangensw #visitorange #orange360 #RUOK #RUOKDay #thereismoretosay #RUOKEveryDay

08.01.2022 Our Year 11 Geography students recently went on their the annual trip to the Macquarie Marshes. They travelled to Burrima which is located in the northern marsh. Burrima is a block of land that adjoins the northern reserve that was purchased by a co-operative of farmers in 2005. In 2019, the area was catastrophically impacted by a lightning strike that started a reed bed fire that destroyed 10,000 acres in 10 hours. In 2020, the affected ecosystem has shown great resilienc...e due to the availability of water in the system and the ecosystem is very healthy. The students then travelled to Gibson’s crossing in the southern marsh for a kayak through the marshes and reed beds. The following photos show the environment at its worst in 2019 and at its best in 2020. It is a truly remarkable ecosystem. #kinrosswolaroischool #orangensw #visitorange #orange360 #geography #macquariemarshes #ecosystems

06.01.2022 Last week, our Year 1 students took part in a 'Step Back in Time’ Day, which celebrated all that they'd learnt about the history of the school in their Term 3 History unit. On ‘Step Back in Time Day’ students came to school dressed in old-fashioned clothes, marched into their classes and sat in rows. They completed their literacy and numeracy work on chalk boards, tried to memorise a poem by chanting it and had a try of some old style cursive handwriting. During their break,... students drank a cup of milk and chatted about it’s place in historical schooling. In the afternoon, they rehearsed some old fashioned bush dances and played some traditional outdoor games including the egg and spoon race, sack race and hoola hoop rolling. Many students said they wished it was Step Back in Time Day every day! #kinrosswolaroischool #orangensw #orange360 #visitorange #juniorschool #year1 #stepbackintime #history

04.01.2022 Throughout their schooling our Year 12 have demonstrated a genuine depth of talent and an eagerness to engage and contribute in a vast array of activities. We have seen so many outstanding performances in music, drama, in the classroom, in industrial and creative arts, in the domain of social justice and on the sports field. What has stood out to me are their outstanding qualities as young people. In the face of this year’s disruption and disappointment, of lost opportunity... and of social dislocation and periods of remote learning, your individual and community spirit was not diminished. Your spirit of optimism and adaptability are an outstanding tribute to you. To our graduating Class of 2020, thank you for your example and contribution to Kinross Wolaroi School. We wish you every success along your journey in the future wherever it may take you.
