24.01.2022 I wish I could say we built this garden, but we didn't. Termites did. I'm jealous.

24.01.2022 Part two of the work in the drains finished after the last wet. Every bit of the flagging hand-mixed and put in shovel by shovel.

24.01.2022 Built this beautiful mahogany seat. Easy to do.

21.01.2022 The Chung Wah Society asked us to repair the Statue of Wealth in time for the Chinese New Year. The poor guy had been hit by a car and lost his head, broken his jaw and lost some teeth. We were able to rebuild him using various epoxies and by grinding up local porcelinate rocks to get the colours right.

20.01.2022 Around 12 years ago we took on what would turn out out to be the most difficult job we have done. The brief was to fill in the existing casino pool, build and render the walls, build the steel framed decks, and install paving, lighting and stainless handrails, planting, irrigation and then paint it all, all in 16 weeks to coincide with an already announced Grand Opening. It started badly. The design levels between the casino and the pool were incorrect which meant that the s...tair and ramp plans didn't work so we threw them away. Excavation for the walls revealed that a lot of rubbish from Cyclone Tracy had been buried and the wall footings needed to be redesigned, so we threw those plans away. It took about three weeks to get the new solutions. 13 weeks to go and we'd hardly started. We worked long hours (well into the night sometimes) to catch up. When we drilled into the side of the new pool to attach the decks frames water started to come out of the pool. When I called the pool builder to try to figure out what we had hit, he was furious. It turns out no-one had discussed attaching a deck to his pool. I knew he was going to be really pissed off when I told him about the shade that to was to be on top of his pool, that was also on our plan. He was. So we threw the steelwork plans away, took the already constructed steel away and waited for another redesign. Halfway through the project only 2 of the 16 or so plans we had quoted on could be used, the cover plan and the planting plan. I had to call in every favour I had in the bank, and them some, and we had people working all hours for the last 6 weeks and with a couple of days to go till the opening we were painting and planting. The design, however, called for an aqua blue, and when we had the first coat on we realised it looked terrible and told the client as much. At a hastily organised meeting everyone agreed and a new colour was selected and we were ordered to repaint the whole job. We literally finished the job the morning of the Grand Opening. As I saw coming, when it came time to get paid, the consultants all denied that they had delayed us, and knocked back many of the claims for the variations. The Casino, to their credit and despite not having to, made a one off ex gratia payment to us, and thanked us, sincerely, for the work we had done. That payment saved us from going broke. I took this photo just recently. While I cannot view the project, from my perspective, as a success, I remain happy with the work we did, and the fact that we were able to keep our promise to the Casino, despite what we went through. Twelve years later it still looks smick.

15.01.2022 We've been asked to build a stone wall. It has to be decorative, and structural. And we have been asked to use the stone excavated from the pool. When you use imported stone, usually, you can make the stone do what you want. When you use this stone you have to do what it lets you do, and sometimes it's a fight.... We are doing this for great clients, it's hot and it's physically and creatively tiring, (there are over 150 barrows of mortar hidden behind somewhere in this wall), so we are attacking it in bursts, in between other jobs. It's not quite finished but it's close and it's coming together. See more

14.01.2022 We've been doing a project for the for the Department of Heritage for the last three weeks. But we can't tell you what it is yet. All should be revealed on Monday. Stay tuned.... .

14.01.2022 Tada!!! It's the anchor from HMAS Darwin! We learned a lot about anchors. This one weighs 3.2 to 3.6 tonne depending on who you talk to, and, surprisingly, the bottom section is hollow. And, anchors aren't designed to sit on slabs upright. They are actually designed to fall over when they hit the seabed. Huge thanks to Preston Engineering, J & M Concreting and Complete Crane Hire for going above and beyond.

11.01.2022 Transplanting in the Territory is a really good option for instant gardens. We've been digging up some big plants this month and moving them with great success.

11.01.2022 Casuarina Childcare Water feature

10.01.2022 What a brilliant job! Congratulations Clayton & the Landshapes - NT team, the NT Gov #HeritageBranch, Fannie Bay History and Heritage Society and City of Darwin... for the restoration and improvements to the Great Air Race Memorial in Fannie Bay. 99 years ago today, Sir Ross Smith and his crew landed here, the winners of the Great Air Race from England to Australia.

09.01.2022 Fig tree at Dwyer Park near Bagot Overpass. Thousands of people drive past it daily and probably don't know it's there.

06.01.2022 We've been a bit quiet of late because we have taken on a real challenge. We are doing a lot of stone pitching in the middle of a drain in the middle of the wet season. Here is the entree....

04.01.2022 Last year we carried out renovation of the Ross Smith Memorial in preparation for the 100 year anniversary on celebrations Ross Smith and his crew completing the first ever flight from England to Australia on December 10, 1919. It was a high heritage value project that required us to use all the tricks we already know, as well as learn a few new ones.

04.01.2022 Someone pointed out that if you look hard you can see a face in the rocks. And it sort of does look like a face, I guess. What are the chances? We could do that same job a thousand times and never see such random luck.

03.01.2022 This yard was a dry, flat dustbowl. Our client wanted a native garden in the back and a more formal garden in the front. It's not often you get to blank canvas a house.

02.01.2022 History repeating? A Darwin builder has discovered a rare chisel that was owned by the man doing the same work as him 100 years ago. "I looked over the harbour and thought, well, there's something I've got in common with this guy. I'm sure he did the same thing," Clayton Dwyer said.

01.01.2022 Building a curved walkway on 3 planes. It looks easy but it's not. There are around 100 cuts and welds in the steel to get it to flow. Every timber needs be to cut longwise twice to make the wedges. 100 x 1200 long cuts. Add in the secret blockwall garden and 2m2 concrete and... Voila! It looks unremarkable.... I've always said that the secret to landscaping is to make it look like nothing happened. See more
