25.01.2022 For many of us, 2020 was a difficult year. But we still had much to be grateful for, even with all the challenges. For others, the past year was much harder and 2021 is looking just as tough. But life can be better. We provide practical programs for women, families and youth that have long-lasting positive effects. And we’re local, so every dollar you donate stays right here in our community. You can help make 2021 brighter. Donate today. Even a small amount makes a difference.

25.01.2022 Day One of 16 Days of Activism- International Day for Elimination of violence against women! What is domestic violence? Domestic violence takes different forms and may be known as different things.... Domestic violence is unfortunately very common in Australia. It is a pattern of abusive behaviour through which a person seeks to control and dominate another person. It is ongoing behaviour that gradually undermines the victim’s confidence and ability to leave the violent person. The severity and frequency of violence often escalate over time. Domestic violence happens in all kinds of relationships, including: intimate partners, lovers, husband and wife, ex-partners, older people and their children (elder abuse), other family members, including step-parents, parents and their teenage or adult children, friends, people with disabilities and their carers. As a community we can do something to eliminate violence. Do not be a bystander. If you notice something call the police. Know who support services are. Let victim survivors know there is help available. Links For Women: 6964 3381 1800 Respect: 1800 737 732 Kids Helpline: 1800 551 500 Lifeline: 13 11 14 Mensline Australia: 1300 789 978

18.01.2022 Day 3 of Sixteen Days of Activism Domestic violence is a serious national issue in Australia and globally. It is an inherently perpetrated against women. 1 in 3 women globally and 1 in 6 women in Australia experience domestic and family violence. Domestic violence takes many forms, despite some people thinking it only involves physical violence.... Technology-facilitated domestic violence is a form of domestic violence that provides abusers a pervasive way to control, coerce, stalk and harass their victims. It includes a range of behaviours. These include sending abusive text messages or emails, making continuous threatening phone calls, spying on and monitoring victims through the use of tracking systems, abusing victims on social media sites, and sharing intimate photos of the victim without their consent (revenge porn). Victims (and their children) should not be forced to abandon their digital communications which can be a source of support during a traumatic period. The focus needs to be on holding abusers to account. Telling victims to forsake their online presence effectively drives women offline, marking the internet as yet another male-dominated space. The focus of the justice system needs to be on preventing perpetrators from further abusing victims through the use of technology, and ultimately reducing victim-blaming attitudes and the onus being on the victim to do something about the abuse.

17.01.2022 Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread and persistent human rights violations in our world. Gender-based violence has many forms, including: - intimate partner violence (physical assault, psychological abuse and marital rape); ... - sexual violence and harassment (rape, forced sexual acts, unwanted sexual advances); - harassment (street harassment, stalking and cyber-harassment). For 16 days from 25 November - 10 December, people around the world unite to raise awareness about gender-based violence, challenge discriminatory attitudes and call for improved laws and services to end violence against women for good. #EndGenderBasedViolence #GenerationEquality #SpreadTheWord (Image credit: UN Women)

14.01.2022 Day 7 of 16 Days of Activism - Emotional Abuse Emotional abuse is any behavior that exploits another persons vulnerability, insecurity, or character. Such behaviours include continuous put downs, intimidation, manipulation and brainwashing.... This may include but is not limited to: - Insulting or criticising to undermine and reduce the victim’s self-confidence. This includes public humiliation, as well as actual or threatened rejection. - Threatening or accusing, either directly or indirectly, with intention to cause emotional or physical harm or loss. This may be threatening to kill the victim or themself, or both. - Using reality distorting statements or behaviours that create confusion and insecurity in the victim like saying one thing and doing another, stating untrue facts as truth, and neglecting to follow through on stated intentions. - Consistently disregarding, ignoring, or neglecting the victim’s requests and needs. - Using actions, statements or gestures that attack the victim’s self-esteem and self-worth. - Telling the victim they’re mentally unstable or incompetent. - Forcing the victim to take drugs or alcohol. - Not allowing the victim to practice their religious beliefs, isolating them from the religious community, or using religion as an excuse for abuse. - Using any form of coercion or manipulation which is disempowering to the victim.

13.01.2022 Day 5 of 16 Days of Activism-Physical Abuse Physical abuse is any physically aggressive behavior, withholding of physical needs, indirect physically harmful behavior, or threat of physical abuse. This may include but is not limited to: hitting, kicking, biting, slapping, shaking, pushing, pulling, punching, choking, beating, scratching, pinching, pulling hair, stabbing, shooting, drowning, burning, hitting with an object, threatening with a weapon, or threatening to physical...ly assault. Physical violence also includes withholding of physical needs including interruption of sleep or meals, denying money, food, transportation, or help if sick or injured, locking victim into or out of the house, refusing to give or rationing necessities. Abusing, injuring, or threatening to injure others like children, pets, or special property can occur. Forcible physical restraint against their will, being trapped in a room or having the exit blocked, being held down is also a common occurrence. The perpetrator hitting or kicking walls, doors, or other objects during an argument, throwing things in anger, destruction of property. It can also include holding the victim hostage. We can all do something to end domestic and family violence. Know the signs, if you see or hear something call the police.

12.01.2022 Day 4 of 16 Days of Activism-Financial Abuse Financial abuse involves controlling a persons ability to acquire, use, and maintain financial resources. Those who are controlled financially may also be prevented from working. They also may have their own money restricted or stolen by the perpetrator, and rarely do they have complete access to money and other resources. When they do have money, they often have to account for every dollar they spend.... The forms of financial abuse can vary from situation to situation. Sometimes subtle tactics like manipulation are used while others may be more overt, demanding, and intimidating. The goal is always the sameto gain power and control in relationships. Financial abuse is one of the most powerful methods of keeping a victim trapped in an abusive relationship. Research shows that victims often are too concerned about their ability to provide financially for themselves and their children to end the relationship. Let’s recognise domestic violence in all its forms, recognise it is mostly perpetrated by men against women and work to end gender based violence.

08.01.2022 Today 16 Days of Activism draws to a close with International Human Rights Day. 10th December is an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of human rights in continuing to build and re-building the world we want after a global pandemic, the need for global solidarity as well as our interconnectedness and shared humanity. We need to ensure that gender based violence is eradicated, women and girls are not subject to violence and practices that take away their human rights. We m...ust raise our boys to not perpetrate or accept violence against women and girls as the norm. Our justice systems must be overhauled to further hold perpetrators to account and take the onus of responsibility for actions off victim survivors. We all need to step up as individuals, a community, a nation and as part of a global society to put human rights at the forefront and we need to be brave and call out gendered violence for what it is. Have the conversations in your family, with your friends and in the community about what is acceptable behaviour in healthy relationships. Educate yourselves on how you can help people who may be victims of domestic and family violence. Let’s not just make this something that happens during 16 Days of Activism, let’s make these discussions part of everyday conversation.
