24.01.2022 It is amazing to me how many people are sending their GSD pups to ‘boarding training’ to learn: to walk on a lead, come when called, to not bark like a maniac at grasshoppers etc. Two things are so wrong with this! 1) if you don’t have the experience, intelligence, desire, commitment or physical ability to train an active, highly intelligent & biddable dog - DONT GET ONE. 2). Breeders who sell puppies to people who are not capable or breed pups that are difficult to train (non typical) - SHAME ON YOU! Authority & obedience cannot be purchased. If you need help, work with a club/trainer/breeder - it is you who needs training. Training with your dog to overcome problems builds bonds and works long term.

24.01.2022 SCAMMER ALERT a person on Facebook is trying to sell puppies claiming to be Leafield.. they are asking 600 doll:ars and 60 doll:ars delivery. The lady they almost scammed is 80 years old! I am NOT SELLING PUPPIES as I have none right now. And if I was they wouldn’t be 600 and I don’t deliver. Please keep your eye out for this person and let me know if you find them. And I NEVER advertise on FB.

20.01.2022 Off Leash Parks are Not Socialisation Ever wondered why your dog gets hectic in off leash areas and why when back on leash he or she is a bit reactive to other ...dogs. The cause is too much uncontrolled off leash exposure and not just to dogs. Most people are conditioned to take their dogs to off leash parks all innocently in the name of socialisation. Sadly this is not the way to go. The meaning of Socialisation is "learning to be social within constraints". There is nothing controlled about an off leash park. Off leash parks are a breeding ground for impulsive behaviour that in the vast majority of cases is detrimental to teaching dogs how to interact. If you have ever attended off leash parks I am sure you can identify with the following; The Bully - This is the dog that runs around smashing into other dogs and being a nuisance, The Herder - This is the frustrated herding dog that is continuously running around trying to herd all the dogs and sometimes kids, The Ball Thief - This is the ball obsessed dog that just wants every ball being thrown, The Unsure Dog - This is the dog that never leaves the owner's side and is not at all comfortable. While dogs enjoy playing and get to expel some energy, the potential for problems to occur is very high. In my role as an Expert Witness for court, by far the majority of assessments I have to do are from dog to dog and dog to human incidents in off leash parks. The best place to take your dog to learn how to be social is a well run professional dog training center which allows on and off leash interaction under guidance and control. Dogs need to play and run but they also need to have their behaviours directed and made socially appropriate. 18.01.2022 My dog is not my child. My dog is not my furbaby. I am not her mother. ... My dog is my friend. She is my partner and my companion. To treat her like a child, to infantilize her and make it seem as though she needs my constant coddling or protection, would be unfair to her. She is an adult carnivore that I have brought into my human world. Because of that it is my responsibility as her owner: 1) To communicate with her in a way she can understand. 2) To provide leadership, discipline and mutual respect. 3) To understand her instincts and needs, and provide appropriate outlets for them. 4) To train her and provide her the skills to function effectively in our human world, including acceptable manners and behaviors. Our dogs deserve to be given responsibility and allowed to be adult creatures, not perpetual babies. Please, don't try to make them tiny humans, they aren't and they don't want to be. Dogs are wonderful because they are dogs. Let them be dogs. Teach them to be good ones. - K. Carter

15.01.2022 PET SUFFOCATION WARNING Via: Prevent Pet Suffocation Melissa Carroll shares the loss of daughters and boyfriends 6 month old German Shepherd who suffo...cated Monday in a cereal bag, devastating the whole family. Melissa writes, I came across your page reading an article about pet suffocation. I was trying to find something to try and ease my daughter and her boyfriends mind after the events that unfolded on Monday. My daughter went to work (less than 2 miles down the road) and left her two pups home like any other day. Her boyfriend came home from work 3 hours later and found their German Shepard pup Roxy had knocked a cereal box off the kitchen counter, stuck her head inside the bag and suffocated. The bag was still on her head when he found her. They both are completely devastated! Were all devastated! Of course both are questioning what they could have done to prevent it but neither even knew the dangers of such a thing even happening. Sadly everyone we have talked to today werent even aware of such a thing. After doing some research we were shocked at the percentage of suffocation related pet deaths. I tried to explain to them that this is no ones fault and even the most experienced pet owners have had this happen. This could have happened while they were even home. Its just a terrible accident that no one could foresee but now they need to prevent it from happening again with their other dog Axel. Roxy was only 6 months old sadly. My daughter and her boyfriend are taking it so hard but the stories on your page have helped ease her guilt some. None of us even realized the dangers of a simple box of cereal. Its still so hard to wrap our heads around. Roxy was such a sweet spunky girl who loved the water. Shed even jump in the bathtub with my daughter sometimes. Its like a light has gone out in their household and I wish more than anything I could take that pain away. We talked today and I told her if sharing Roxys story just helps save one pet then her death wouldnt be for nothing. She agreed. Yes our whole two combined families will definitely be signing the petition you mentioned and will try to bring awareness every chance I get. Thank you so much for this page and sharing all these stories. I have learned more in 24 hrs about pet suffocation then I have known my whole life. I really hope seeing other peoples stories will help ease both their hearts and minds so they dont continue to blame themselves. So many of us can relate to feeling like a light went out in the household after losing a pet to suffocation. Please share in honor of Roxy. Thank you! #mpdl #reacttagshare

11.01.2022 Please be very careful about what toys you give your dogs. We talk about this in class too. Always use larger balls that are less likely to be swallowed with ropes attached as this can help you get it out if it does get stuck. (Shared from Keybeau German Shepherds).

10.01.2022 Explanation of Titer Results Dr Schultz has done the research and makes it very clear: We are confusing people with the word titer by assigning a number to it...! Any circulating antibody indicates immunity! It's a yes or no answer! It would be better when we do a titer that the result come back indicating Yes this pet has circulating antibodies and is immune or No this pet has no circulating antibodies and is not. Basically a titer is a series of dilutions to see if there are still enough antibodies to neutralize the virus so the higher the number the higher the titer. 1:2 is a low titer, 1:80 is a higher titer but both equal immunity because there are measurable antibodies in both cases. God bless, Doc

04.01.2022 BACKYARD MYTHS Do working breeds need a lot of space? It really is a bit of a misconception that working breed dogs (like Kelpies, Border Collies, Cattle Dogs..., and Shepherds) must have a large back yard because they need a lot of exercise. As trainers, what we mostly see when called in to help with behavioural issues in these breeds, are dogs that have a lot of unstructured time in a big space that they dont really know what to do with. All this freedom, without guidance, often leads them to create jobs for themselves like running the perimeter and yelling at neighbours, dogs, possums, kids, the postman, and anyone else going about their business. It often goes hand in hand with digging holes and destructive behaviour like chewing on the outdoor furniture or pulling washing off the line. And in the outside world it can often translate into reactivity towards fast moving objects (like bikes, cars and skateboards) or dogs and other animals. For young dogs especially, its a bit like going out and leaving a two-year-old loose in the house unsupervised. Not safe for the toddler or the house! It seems counter intuitive, but what most of these dogs need during their independent time is a smaller space, to minimise overstimulation, and where they can instead learn to chill and relax while they are on their own. Coupled with that, they need structured exercise and other forms of enrichment that provide important mental stimulation and an outlet to satisfy their breed instincts, as well as installing an off switch (impulse control). Trying to wear a dog out with physical exercise alone, generally just creates a super athlete with more stamina, but mental stimulation will tire a dog out more quickly and more completely. Structured free time, as opposed to a free for all, offers an opportunity to build a relationship. It can occur in the back yard, through play or training, or elsewhere through an obedience club, scent work, agility, weight pull, herding and a myriad of other fun but structured activities which require them to use their brain. Training means teamwork, and this helps to develop a strong bond with your dog. The great thing about this is that they can absolutely live in a home with a small backyard and still have their instinctual needs met in other ways. Or, if they do have the luxury of a big back yard, we often recommend a self-contained smaller penned area that keeps them from practising the behaviours we dont want to encourage when left to their own devices. Similar to using a crate in the house, but bigger for the back yard. Of course, it is not appropriate to stick your dog in a pen at the back of the garden and never let them out or engage with them but, if used correctly, it can lead to more freedom for your dog. Tighter boundaries mean more freedom down the track. The end goal is to teach dogs how to successfully be at liberty (not constantly in a commanded position or situation). We initially use management (like dog runs and crates) to implement boundaries, structure and rules, while we are teaching and shaping the behaviours that we want them to have at liberty. We need to guide them. Then we must give them the opportunity to make choices. Good choices mean more freedom, more time at liberty. So dont let anyone tell you that you have to have a big backyard to own a working breed. But, be prepared to put the work in to meet your dogs needs, mental, physical and instinctual.

02.01.2022 Endochondral Ossification of the Elbow joint in the dog Age 1 week - 12 months. Very interesting to see how your dog is still developing up to a year old. I h...ope this can help people understand how high impact or repetitive loading like jogging too early can damage the growth plates in your puppies joints, damaging the cells can stop or alter growth, this can lead to deformities in the bones and joints later leading to instability and degeneration. Bigger dogs mature much slower than smaller dogs so always speak to a Vet or a Vet Physio to see at what age for your breed specifically you can start to do higher intensity exercises with your dog. #growthplates #vetphysio #physio #animalphysio #elbowdysplasia #dogsuae #dogsindubai #dogshealth #healthydog

02.01.2022 Have you ever wondered why human Dr's tell you to eat less processed foods and more healthy foods yet many Vets are telling you to do the complete opposite? Whe...n your Vet is at University, kibble companies such as Royal Canin and Hills Science Diet pay the University a sponsorship fee or similar in order to access Vet students to provide "education", offer programs, brand ambassador jobs, free product, goodie bags etc. By the time your Vet makes it to their first day as a qualified Vet, they have been conditioned to think kibble is the only thing a dog should eat. Some Vets challenge this and do post grad education in nutrition and do not promote kibble to their clients, these are usually called Holistic or Integrative Vets. Are you ready to kick the kibble? https://www.facebook.com/groups/rawandfresh

02.01.2022 This is a puppy aged about 6 months, from the previous Clara x Vinnie litter (he is 12 months old now). This video was sent to me by his owners.. I always warn people to be very careful with dog/children interactions and never recommend this type of interaction due to the possible negative outcomes. The owners assured me that they supervise carefully and they have no concerns at all.. this little boy is the youngest of 3 and this pup lives in the house with them, mum is a full time mum so dog is rarely alone and is very well trained. When Max has had enough, he just walks away.
