23.01.2022 My heart is heavy as I read yet another post by a beautiful young teenager struggling to live with Tourette Syndrome... She writes, "I can't make it stop. I can't make it go away. I wish I was dead." Listen, having lived with Tourette Syndrome myself for 40yrs I know these thoughts and feelings all too well but you are not alone...... I HEAR YOU AND I AM HERE FOR YOU! 22.01.2022 This is what I would have liked to have said to the world when I was only 7yrs old.... "STOP SAYING STOP! I can't help it. Do you think I like tics?! Do you think I enjoy being laughed at? Mocked and mimicked by my 'friends' ? I know my tics annoy you, but for me they can be PAINFUL, relentless, humiliating and exhausting! Be kind!... Can you stop blinking?! No?! So just be a nice person and stop saying stop!" Stress, uncertainty and change (aka 2020!!!) can all be triggers for anxiety and depression and for people living with Tourette Syndrome, also increased involuntary vocal and motor tics. 19.01.2022 I love how Mother's Day in Australia falls during Tourette Syndrome Awareness Week in May! A big shout out to MY MUM for being my rock, a constant support and advocate for me going through school & Uni with Tourette Syndrome. We didn't have the resources or understanding like we do nowadays but she did the best she could with the knowledge she had and LOVED me unconditionally. Mum was 'anti-bullying' before it was even a thing! She was and still is my safe place when I need ...a shoulder to cry on. 14.01.2022 I have learnt that when I think about what I'm thinking about and remove toxic thoughts I tic less. Getting to the core of the trigger, anxiety or depression is key. It also helps to talk things through with someone you trust and listens. 14.01.2022 What other people think really doesn't matter! . As a young girl, born with an incurable neurological condition called Tourette Syndrome which involves involuntary vocal sounds and movements called 'tics', I was daily humiliated, teased, bullied, mocked, laughed at and talked about behind my back. I believe, and learnt the painful way, that what other people think of you REALLY DOES NOT MATTER!!! (As my mum would say, who are 'they' anyway???) . What matters is what YOU thin...k of YOU! . A psychologist can't do anything.... A diagnosis will not change anything. But you, as a parent, can do something!
