22.01.2022 There is a growing appreciation of what life in Tasmania has to offer. A terrific interview in The Irish Times with my friend and all round great person Grace Mairéad Walsh, who, like me, left Europe to make Tasmania home. I love the idea of the good folk of Ireland reading in their national newspaper about our wonderful Tassie island home, reflecting on the similarities between the two places and revelling in the shared wonders of living on an island where people sti...ll value connection and compassion . Good one Grace! We’re glad you chose Tassie!

21.01.2022 UPDATE: It's so busy right now that my Recharge Day became a Recharge Morning! LOL. Still, the point stands. It's good to take off whatever time we can to go slow and gather ourselves. ORIGINAL POST: Taking time off to recharge is so important.... Even when we’re busy. Time to just relax and recharge is good for my soul. It also helps me get my energy back so I can do more and do it better. For me, breakfast out at friendly Pigeon Hole cafe then time amongst the trees at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens (RTBG), followed by a stroll around the quaint hilly suburb of #glebe #recharge #rechargeyourself #timeout #selfcare #hobart #readytogo

21.01.2022 Facilitator’s life. Working here with the incredible Dan O’Hara on Brighton Council’s 2050 Vision. A great workshop. Inspiring group. ... Good times ahead for Brighton with the Council GM James Dryburgh and his team, along with a committed crop of local Councillors.

19.01.2022 Benevolent sexism. Have you experienced it? Do you do it? Genius illustrated explanation of the new face of sexism.

18.01.2022 The Advocacy Tasmania campaign I'm doing media on is taking off. A phone in every room in aged care facilities. Today's Mercury editorial below. Check out Advocacy Tasmania's Facebook page too. Lots of passion there. Shares from lots of people and organisations, including COTA (Council On The Ageing) Tasmania. ... Federal MP Bridget Archer MP - Liberal Member for Bass and State Minister Michael Ferguson have expressed interest in working together on the issue. Great! Advocacy Tasmania is calling for every person in residential aged care in Tasmania to be given a private phone in their room to keep them safe from COVID-19 and protect their independence. The BEST thing you can do to help the 2,000 older Tasmanians living without this basic freedom, is to SEND A MESSAGE to Richard Colbeck, the Federal Minister for Aged Care Minister, calling for everyone in aged care to be given a private phone in their room. You can reach the Minister via email at: [email protected]

17.01.2022 All set for a day of writing. An opinion piece for one client. A news article for another. A business development plan for a third. And a social media strategy for a fourth. Love my job. ... Let me know if YOU want me to write for you.

17.01.2022 I was super pleased to help my client City of Hobart with the (quite windy!) media launch for its new electric vehicle fast-charge station yesterday. Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds joined Tassie Premier Peter Gutwein for the official opening of Hobart’s first fast electric car charger right in the heart of the city (Dunn Place carpark). The charger can fully charge a car in just 30 minutes!... Another step for a more sustainable future, people!

15.01.2022 How many of these phrases do you use?? I'm definitely guilty of 'Thanks in advance'! Content warning: Strong language.

15.01.2022 Cool resource. Developed to change how we talk to kids. But applies to anyone, I reckon. If someone is using a word from the left column to describe someone else, suggest they try the words from the right column instead.... Communicate connection. Communicate kindness.

15.01.2022 Do you work in the Tasmanian Public Service? Do you contract in services? If so, you might know that the Tasmanian Government has strengthened its BUY LOCAL POLICY to help local businesses during COVID-19. The updated policy will help protect Tasmanian livelihoods and keep our community strong and proud by keeping work here, on our island home.... From 31 July: 1. A new Economic and Social Benefits Test is weighted at 25 per cent of the total procurement evaluation criteria when evaluating competitive procurements. 2. The low value procurement threshold has gone up from $50,000 to $100,000. Basically for contracts below $100,000 you should approach Tasmanian businesses first. So, if you need communications services, call me. I meet the Buy Local criteria. And I'm ready to help you. Buy Local. Buy Leigh Arnold Communications.

14.01.2022 I'm facilitating four workshops this week. So time for a trim at Hair Gallery Rosny, a stationery run at Officeworks and a good feed at Mr Burger Tasmania.

14.01.2022 A Friday infographic for all you lovely small to medium sized business owners out there. Which is at least half of Tasmania! How much work we fear that we need to survive in business vs how much work we actually need to thrive. Reject the shortage mindset. There is plenty of work out there for you. Plenty of customers.... Just develop a great service or product that solves the problems and meets the needs of a certain group of people, underpin that offering with powerful values that connect with those people's higher needs, and promote your offering to that group in a compelling way with great comms/ storytelling. Or as Seth Godin puts it: "People clump together into common worldviews, and your job is to find a previously undiscovered clump and frame a story for those people." Phew. Not so stressful after all. Good luck!

14.01.2022 Shucks, thanks Meg! Very kind. If my approach to comms resonates with you and your organisation, let's talk...

14.01.2022 Had great fun facilitating a three-hour workshop with the super smart, creative and friendly team at Futago yesterday. Futago is a kickass award-winning design studio which harvests the giant hearts and clever minds of their hyper-talented team to invent killer designs which help Tasmanian business thrive. Oh yeah. And they're passionately restless in always looking for new and even better ways to deliver yet more good things to their lucky clients. Hence the workshop.... If you want a slice of the Futago pie to make your business stand out from the crowd, get in touch with the team. And if you want me to facilitate your workshop, you know where to find me...

14.01.2022 Conspiracy theorists are having their day right now. If you like understanding WHY people are persuaded by them, you're going to LOVE this website and its resources. Of course it's not just conspiracy theorists. Lots of people use language to fool us into believing untruths.... This website lists 24 logical fallacies that are used to make weak arguments stronger and pull the wool over our eyes. Never be fooled again! Check out the website. And if you send them your email, they'll send you FREE downloadable copies of their posters in PDFs. PS. Thanks Russell Kelly for sharing this with me several years ago!

13.01.2022 Women account for 50% of the top ten most eloquent world leaders, according to research from the UK's Development Academy. Only 12% of countries are led by a woman. But women leaders account for HALF of the very best communicators. These are impressive figures. Topping the list for leaders with the best communication skills? Of course, the ever wonderful Jacinda Ardern.... What does this tell us? Surely this: If we want more inspirational, authentic, compassionate, connecting, calm, generous, kind AND strong leaders, then we need more women leaders. And for the Aussies reading this, note the person at number 10!

12.01.2022 When I'm not facilitating workshops, driving media campaigns, writing attention-grabbing copy, coaching clients on effective social media, or doing any of the other things I've been posting about lately, I also help organisations with stakeholder engagement for their strategic plans. At the moment I'm working with a couple of amazing colleagues to support inspirational General Manager James Dryburgh and his tight-knit team at Brighton Council for their 2050 Vision. The Co...uncil wants to know all about the shared hopes and goals of local people for the future of Tasmania’s fastest growing community.(Did you know it was the fastest growing?? True fact!) You can be part of the consultation too! Just complete the survey below by Friday 18 September...

12.01.2022 Spotted: A poster I worked on in 2017, on show at the Hobart Library. It was part of a wider campaign I developed with Amanda Marsland and Louise Mills while seconded to the Department of Premier and Cabinet comms team, led by Mandy Denby and her 2IC Emma Matuszek. All super smart, highly skilled and deeply dedicated public servants. The big-hearted former Head of State Service Greg Johannes was passionate about this campaign: that State Service employees have the ri...ght to be safe at work. I really loved working on this project. In hindsight it was obvious that I really needed to be doing values-based comms with good, kindhearted people. And now I am! Through Leigh Arnold Communications. Yay.

11.01.2022 Leigh Arnold Communications is two years old today! Woo hoo. Running this business is the best job I’ve ever had. Building connection and compassion through communications. 10.01.2022 Wear it Purple Day is today. It’s about showing LGBTIQ+ young people that they have the right to be proud of who they are. It is about creating safe spaces in schools, universities, workplaces and public spaces to show LGBTIQ+ young people that they are seen and supported.

09.01.2022 Imagine having no access to a private phone. That's the situation faced by thousands of our elders. Have a read of this post below. They say social media posts should be short. This one's an exception. It's worth the read.... Oh, and I'm pleased to have helped Advocacy Tas get this story in Saturday's The Mercury Newspaper. I'm hoping to be able to get them more media on this important issue.

09.01.2022 A phone in every room in aged care facilities in Tassie. To keep our elders safe from COVID-19 and protect their independence. Check out today's compelling The Mercury Newspaper opinion piece from Advocacy Tasmania CEO Leanne Groombridge. I'm pleased to be providing comms, media and advisory services for this Advocacy Tasmania campaign.... It's an important campaign. And it's gaining traction. You can be part of it - more on that below. Media wise, so far we've had a story in The Mercury Newspaper, an editorial in the paper and today's opinion piece, an interview on ABC Hobart Drive and a piece in the national aged care publication Aged Care Insite. Here's the link to that one: bit.ly/2FQEBI8 In terms of social media, Advocacy Tasmania is putting out really powerful posts on its Facebook page. Case studies of how our elders are suffering alone without phones. Check out their page. It's powerful stuff: bit.ly/2YBAqXn Political support is coming in from Senator Jacqui Lambie, State Minister Michael Ferguson and Bridget Archer MP - Liberal Member for Bass. Advocacy Tasmania has written to the Federal Aged Care Minister Senator Richard Colbeck and the Tassie Premier Peter Gutwein seeking action. We've had supportive comments on social media from COTA (Council On The Ageing) Tasmania, Meg Webb - Independent for Nelson, and lots and lots of kind Tasmanians. If you'd like to help with the campaign, please send a message to Minister Colbeck calling for everyone in aged care to be given a private phone in their room. You can reach the Minister at: [email protected]. Many people have already sent the Minister a message. It would be great if you did the same. For our elders.

03.01.2022 Branded face masks - there's an idea. Shifts the cost to companies/ organisations. And allows them to play a practical role in the response to COVID. Also makes face masks more appealing to users, increasing compliance. https://mumbrella.com.au/branded-face-masks-is-a-strategy-o... Photo by Anna Shvets from Pexels.

03.01.2022 Want to support Tassie cafes, restaurants and food producers doing it tough during COVID-19?? Then just download Eat Well Tasmania's hugely popular We Eat Local app and get into it Cafes and restaurants have now been added to the app. So you can buy local food to cook at home AND local food cooked by local eateries. Go Tassie!! Check out the WIN news story all about it, including an interview with celebrity chef Massimo Mele! Woo hoo.... I was stoked to help EWT with media for all this

02.01.2022 I interviewed former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd last weekend. Definitely a career highlight. I quizzed him for half an hour via Zoom on leadership, trade, China and Aboriginal Australia, before facilitating another 30 minutes of questions from the awesome participants in the current Tasmanian Leaders Program (TLP). I also ran a session for the TLP group on how to ask good questions. So they were ready to talk with the ex-PM.... Mr Rudd was impressively knowledgeable, effortlessly engaging and notably funny. As a former political reporter, I can easily say it's one of the most enjoyable interviews I've ever conducted. I've done a few of these things now: interviewing keynotes and then leading questions from the floor. Another fun session was a few months back with Elizabeth Broderick, Australia's former Sex Discrimination Commissioner. If you'd like me to offer this service at your next event or conference (including online!) just get in touch.
