16.01.2022 Look at this building now on the corner of Brooks Cct and Copeland St. Originally used as an Administration office and a Dispensary. It was last used as a Nurses Training School. Australand (now Frasers) have used it as a temporary sales office.

14.01.2022 This year would be the 125th Anniversary of Lidcombe Hospital. It has certainly some changes in that time. To learn more about it's rich history and help celebrate check out our website, perhaps buy a book. http://lidcombeheritagegroup.com.au/

13.01.2022 It is with great sadness that I have announce the passing of Laurie Gordon. Laurie was a founding member of our group, its first Vice President a position he ably held until his very recent entry into a nursing home. He was a valuable member who served as our conduit to Auburn Council. His loss will be sorely felt. Our President, Dr Greg Marcar, wishes to express his heart condolences to Laurie's family.

13.01.2022 Extract from a panoramic photograph of Lidcombe Hospital (then Rookwood State Hospital and Asylum for Men, 1920. This panoramic shot of a section of Rookwood As...ylum was taken around 1920. The hospital, originally built as a boys reformatory in the 1880s was never used for this purpose and instead became an asylum for the Aged and Infirm (commonly known as the Old Mens Home) from 1892/3. In 1927, it became the Lidcombe State Hospital and Home in recognition of its growing importance as a medical facility. The original dining hall is on the left and the first of the dormitories on the right, both dating from the 1880s. The chimney stack and boiler room were built in 1901 to provide lighting and power for the site. The Asylum was self-sufficient at this period and had extensive vegetable gardens, poultry, a dairy herd and piggery as well as 50 acres of maize and oats under cultivation to feed the livestock. The farm buildings are visible at the rear of the photo. Note how undeveloped the surrounding countryside was at this time. (Photo source: Photographer: R.P. 11.01.2022 A darker side of Rookwood was its neighbour the Rookwood Asylum. In 1879 the government purchased 1300 acres and, although originally planned for a boys training institution, in 1893 it opened as Rookwood Asylum, which, because of the severe economic depression of the 1890s, became a home for infirm and destitute men and boys. In 1913 it became a State Hospital , and later an aged-care home and even later again, in 1966, it became Lidcombe Hospital. During its darkest years many paupers from the Asylum and Sydneys hospitals and benevolent institutions were buried in unmarked graves. Over 30,000 children, including many babies from Sydney hospitals and institutions were buried in unmarked communal graves. Today those children are remembered by an expansive garden the Rookwood Circle of Love.

07.01.2022 "The Lidcombe Hospital Heritage Group has noted the passing of John Ballard with much sadness. John was a founding member of our Group and was an active participant in earlier years. John wore his affection for the historic old hospital on his sleeve and had an encyclopedic knowledge of his time there. He was co-author to the book "A Historical Tour Of Lidcombe Hospital" and was of invaluable help to Dr. Greg Marcar when it was written. Greg remembers him as an affable and friendly person generous with his time. Our deepest condolences to John's family.Vale John Ballard, you will be sadly missed."
