25.01.2022 You’ve heard it before: Too little sleep makes you exhausted, dumb, and sad. But a simple nap will snap you right back into your smart, peppy self, right? A new JAMA study says nope, because low sleep correlates with lower cognitive functionthe permanent kind.

25.01.2022 As we get older we have a greater risk of developing impairments in areas of cognitive function such as memory, reasoning and verbal ability. We also have a greater risk of dementia, which is what we call cognitive decline that interferes with daily life. The trajectory of this cognitive decline can vary considerably from one person to the next. Despite these varying trajectories, one thing is for sure: even cognitively normal people experience pathological changes in their... brain, including degeneration and atrophy, as they age. By the time a person reaches the age of 70 to 80, these changes closely resemble those seen in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s Disease. Even so, many people are able to function normally in the presence of significant brain damage and pathology. So why do some experience symptoms of Alzheimer’s and dementia, while others remain sharp of mind? It comes down to something called cognitive reserve. This is a concept used to explain a person’s capacity to maintain normal cognitive function in the presence of brain pathology. To put it simply, some people have better cognitive reserve than others.

21.01.2022 Physical exercise may not be top of mind for older adults during the COVID-19 outbreak. But according to one UBC Okanagan researcher, strength training can be an effective way to stay healthy while at home. A recent study from UBCO professor Jenn Jakobi shows that strength training with free-weights that progresses in intensity is effective in combating declining health often observed with adult aging. "Inactivity and social isolation are key contributors to age-related frailty," says Jakobi. "While social isolation is a complex challenge these days, there is absolutely some work we can do on enhancing exercise at home."

19.01.2022 When it comes to ageing and memory loss, it’s inevitable. But the good news is, there’s a lot that can be done to prevent and sometimes reverse the effects of memory loss. That’s why we spoke to brain function expert Shannon Chin from Fit Minds Australia to find out what some of the steps are that older adults can take to stay mentally sharp with age.

15.01.2022 Learning to tie your shoelaces independently is a big milestone in a child’s life. As children begin school, tying their shoelaces becomes a part of the daily routine. However, learning to tie your shoes is a complex motor task that involves bi-manual coordination, motor planning, sequencing, fine motor strength and dexterity. It is not surprising that children can become frustrated easily when learning this new skill.

12.01.2022 Home modifications specifically help residents to live safely and independently in their own homes. The range of possible renovations is diverse, so costs vary widely. Minor modifications might be installing a grab rail in a bathroom to aid stability, or levelling a step at a front door. A major modification could install a ramp or a lift, widen door frames or provide a new bathroom. Modifications must be tailored to individual needs, as no one size fits all just like every home renovation.

11.01.2022 Sitting for long periods increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and even mortality. Sedentary behaviors such as this have increased over the past months due to lockdowns, which compels people to stay at home to study or work. Some would even do their work while lying on the bed, which is no different from sitting as it has the same health risks. The increasing frequency of sedentary behaviors in Americans had become more alarming this time since even before the pandemic, many had managed to put physical activities out of their lives, and the pandemic has just made it worse. Time to move more!

09.01.2022 At Living Strength OT we work with a number of different clients and assist them through an initial assessment called the ‘Initial Functional Needs Assessment’. Most of the time we do this in the client’s own home so we can get a full understanding of their lifestyle. This might sound quite intense but it does cover an overview of how a client goes about their daily living and as we delve deeper, we can then understand what the client’s overall goals are and how we can help them achieve them as quickly as possible. One of the activities we undertake during this initial catch up is what we call a cognitive assessment below we will run through what this activity is and what to expect.

07.01.2022 According to new research, what we eat not only helps keep our bodies healthy but it also plays a huge role in keeping our minds in shape as well! The study investigated information from over 139,000 older Australians and found that there was a strong link between certain food groups, memory loss and other chronic conditions. The results showed that those who consume a high level of fruit and vegetables have lower odds of developing memory loss. Interestingly, the research a...lso went on to show that eating protein-rich food was linked to a better memory. Other key results show that people aged over 80 who have low levels of cereal consumption are at the highest risk of prolonged memory loss. Memory loss is one of the main early symptoms for people with dementia. Dementia being the second highest cause of death in Australia. People living with dementia have on average between two and eight health conditions, which also play a part in speeding up cognitive and functional impairment.

06.01.2022 When learning to meditate it’s not uncommon for people to give up before they’ve had the chance to properly experience the benefits that come from a regular meditation practise. All too often people quickly conclude that they’re ‘no good’ at meditation or they’re unsure whether they are meditating ‘properly’. With this in mind we wanted to address some unhelpful misconceptions about meditation that can make learning to meditate more challenging and frustrating than it needs to be.

04.01.2022 Occupational Therapy Myth Occupational therapy isn’t nearly as important as physical therapy While physical and occupational therapy are critical to a patient’s progress and both help patients regain independence, they play different roles. Physical therapists help restore function of the extremities to help patients achieve full mobility, while occupational therapists focus on helping patients perform activities of daily living teaching adaptation techniques when necessary.
