25.01.2022 Marble Shrimp is one of the difficult shrimp to Photograph. Always hiding inside the coral. This shot took 50 mins of observing and try to understand the movement and then pick the right spot before shoot. Kasai Village Dive Resort house reef is the one of the best place to find them and they are in the shallow around 4m so got time to wait and be patient :-) Equipment: Canon 7D Mark II with Canon 100mm L Macro. I-Divesite SS-02 and Weefine SP2300 with lowest power of red light.

25.01.2022 After being honoured and fortunate enough to have been selected for the 2019 UW Australia Master Class hosted and sponsored by Cocotinos Lembeh, Cocotinos Manado, Weefine & Macromode, I had my first introduction to Blackwater Diving.....in fact each night both resorts gave me the opportunity to attempt then test and hone my skills with this (new to me) type of shooting! Up till this point I had only read and saw posts on social media that showcased some of the weird and wond...erfull creatures that had been lured from the depths by the incredibly bright lights dangling from a 30 mtr rope on either a drifting buoy (Black Water) or an anchored line (Bonfire). After 'setting' the line with over 25,000 Lumens of light which had been supplied by Weefine and casting over the side, we would then sit and wait for 20mins before kitting up and entering the water. The blackness soon gave way to aqua-blue transformed not only by the suspended lights on the line, but also from the torches of the experienced guides who searched the water for the curious critters. Prior to the dive a safety briefing and Blackwater tutorial was held which included new 'call' signs. One of these was a jiggling torch which was the signal for a photographer to come closer and take over from the guide who had a critter in either juvenile or larvae form suspended in his torch beam ready for the shoot. Powerfull spotting lights fixed to the camera moved in while the guide backed off enabling focusing on these sometimes super fast and very small creatures. Eye then jammed in the viewfinder trying to lock onto focus so I could successfully shoot the alien like critters as they darted in and out of the light which made me feel more like Hans Solo in a scene from Star Wars but not knowing if the mission had been successful till reviewed on the laptop back at the room! In over 30 years of diving this has to be one of my most memorable weeks so any one who hasn't tried it....this is bucket list! The option I took for this style of shooting was 'back-button focus' which eliminated a lot of focus searching for repetitive shots and a 60mm Nikon lens for superfast focusing My set up was the Nikon D810 with 60mm lens, 2 x YS250 pro strobe, Weefine 6000. Settings around 1/200-1/320, f16-f22, ISO 200-400. An incredible experience and many thanks to Martinus and Ken Thongpila plus crew/staff for making this event possible! 11.01.2022 Shooting with constant lighting today in the Tweed River, NSW using the Minigear MS-03 dive light and snoot attachment. This is snooting made easy due to the fact you can see exactly where your light is going to reach each time you shoot. Fortunately this little guy (Horned Blenny) seemed totally at ease enjoying his shoot and basking in the 'limelight'. This shot looks like the Blenny is peering out of a bottle with the water behind it but was infact shot against a reef wall with the settings below cancelling out any ambient light and enabling the torch to highlight and illuminate only where directed. Settings; F4, 1/320, ISO80 with 60mm lens on D810.
