19.01.2022 Throwback Thursday - Dr. Anthony J. Parer, Superintendent of the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital 1931 1 November 1952. Dr. T. B. Walker was his successor. D...r. Parer and his family lived in the Doctor’s residence, which was located on the eastern corner of Bean Street and Macadamia Drive, that building was destroyed by fire 28 July 1994. Parer was well known as a compassionate man, who often would ride many miles on horseback through atrocious weather to attend a patient. Dr. Parer took an active and keen interest in all public affairs and was a member of 11 community organisations in the district. Three hundred Range residents paid tribute to Dr. Parer at a farewell function held at the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall, Maleny 10 November 1952. Dr. Parer then took up practice at Chermside in Brisbane, retiring in 1968. Dr. Parer was the brother of famous aviator, Ray Parer and a cousin of wartime photographer, Damien Parer. He was born in Melbourne in 1897 and educated at the Christian Brothers College, St. Kilda and Melbourne University. Dr. Parer moved to Queensland in the early 1930s after graduating in medicine from the London University. Dr. Parer died in October 1971 aged 74 years of age. Dr. Tony Parer Park was built by Caloundra City Council in Bean Street, Maleny, on the site of the original Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital and was officially opened 20 August 2005 in honour of this outstanding rural Doctor. 16.01.2022 DIGITAL EXHIBITION: Mary Grigor ~ A remarkable life ~ Women of Bankfoot House Mary was from the village of Bankfoot in Scotland. On October 10, 1854, Mary and h...er parents, Janet and John, set sail for Australia on the ship William Miles. Mary was 19. During the voyage to Australia, Mary met William Grigor. Mary was governess to the family of Captain John Wickham at Newstead House in Brisbane. In 1860, she accompanied the Wickham family to England, on the Duncan Dunbar, and assisted with the birth of their second child during the sea voyage. In 1861 Mary sailed alone from England to Melbourne on the ship Oithona. After travelling from Melbourne to Queensland, Mary took up a position as governess at Durundur Station near Woodford. Mary and William Grigor became reacquainted, and married in 1863. The couples first home was north of the Mooloolah River, close to what is now Alexandra Headland. In 1868, Mary and William established Bankfoot House in the Glass House Mountains.
