25.01.2022 The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Today (15 August) was a very special day for Mary MacKillop. Apart from being the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary, on this day, Mary MacKillop had her First Holy Communion in 1850 and professed her First Vows in 1867 as a Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart. This Solemnity was Mary MacKillop's favourite and wrote to her mother Flora:... "When I parted with you, I little imagined that I could so soon have the happiness of being allowed to make my Profession which I did on my favourite festival, the Assumption." (21.8.1867) Read more about this day and Mary MacKillop's devotion to the Virgin Mary here... sosj.org.au/feast-mmk-assumption #AssumptionofMary Via @saintmarymackillop

25.01.2022 Reflection on Mary MacKillop In this month's reflection by Sr Michele ) Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart )she states: "Mary MacKillop could be remembered as a great journalist in her day. Mary MacKillop’s journals and her letters have left us a plethora of stories of herself, her family, and the early days of the colony when she was such a vital part of the community. She created images of her journeys and her compassion for the poor; we learn of her belief in the ...importance of education; we imbibe her sense of mission and deep spirituality." 23.01.2022 International Day of Charity Today (5 September) in addition to the International Day of Charity, we celebrate the feast day of St Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Te...resa). As the United Nations states: "In recognition of the role of charity in alleviating humanitarian crises and human suffering within and among nations, as well as of the efforts of charitable organizations and individuals, including the work of Mother Teresa, the General Assembly of the United Nations... designated 5th September, the anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa, as the International Day of Charity." Like Mother Teresa, Saint Mary of the Cross was a charitable woman who remembered her "mission [to] seek first the poorest, most neglected parts of Gods vineyard. (Mary MacKillop 6.3.1900) The legacy of Mary MacKillop continues today by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart and charities such as Mary MacKillop Today. May the words and actions of Saint Mary MacKillop and Mother Teresa inspire us to be more charitable #InternationalDayOfCharity #charity #charitable #Saint #MotherTeresa #StTeresaOfCalcutta #Saint #MaryMacKillop #SaintMaryMacKillop #StMaryOfTheCrossMacKillop

15.01.2022 Advent Today (Sunday 29 November), marks the beginning of the season of Advent. As Sr Maryellen (Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart) says:... "For us Christians, the anticipation of the birth of Christ in the season of Advent resembles our childhood experiences. The word, Advent, derives from the Latin adventus, which means coming. While it is a period of preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus at Christmas, it is also a reminder of the Second Coming of Christ... As we move into this coming Advent season, may we capture the excitement and anticipation of the child as we prepare for the birth of Jesus in our hearts and in the world around us." 13.01.2022 Exaltation of the Holy Cross Also known as the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross, today (14 September) we commemorate both the discovery and the recovery of ...the True Cross of Jesus Christ. On 15 August 1867 when Mary pronounced her religious vows, she became Sister Mary of the Cross. It was Father Julian Tenison Woods, Mary's mentor and spiritual guide during the founding years of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart who encouraged Mary to become 'Mary of the Cross.' She showed how much she loved this title when she wrote to her mother Flora: "My name in religion is Mary of the Cross. No name could be dearer to me, so I must endeavour not to deserve it - for I cannot - but at least I must try not to disgrace it." (21.8.1867) Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop was not afraid of embracing the crosses in her life. Several days after the lifting of her sentence of her excommunication, Mary wrote to her mother Flora: "The Cross is my portion it is also my sweet rest and support. I could not be happy without my cross. I could not lay it down for all the world could give. With the cross I am happy, without it, would be lost." (26.2.1872) We pray that we have the strength and courage to bear our crosses and we remember the loving sacrifice Jesus Christ made for us. Amen #ExaltationOfTheHolyCross #TriumphOfTheCross #cross #Jesus #SaintMaryMacKillop #MaryMacKillop #StMaryOfTheCrossMacKillop (Photo taken at St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney, New South Wales)

13.01.2022 Flora - a Woman of Faith On 17 April 1840, Saint Mary MacKillop’s mother Flora MacDonald arrived in Melbourne, VIC. Patricia Keane rsj wrote:... "Flora was a woman of faith and courage. She taught her children to trust God and to see God’s Will in all that happened in their lives. Mary did all she could to ease her mother’s burden and went to work at a young age to help support the family. In her correspondence with her mother, Mary often commented on how much she owed to her, especially how well Flora had taught her to trust in God’s loving Providence."
