10.01.2022 Tips for students: Always show all working out for every question, and before you type anything into your calculator, make sure you write it down first. This will help to prevent you making mistakes, and will often lead to better exam results (if the working is correct, but you somehow get the wrong answer, you can still get marks for the question in an exam). When doing homework and revision questions, always set out your working the same way as you would in a...n exam (ask your teacher if you’re not sure how it should look). That way, when it comes to exam time, you don’t have to think about doing anything differently. Memorise all the formulas you need to know for each topic after all, in many cases you can’t even start a question if you don’t know the correct formula! Write down the formula you will be using before you substitute anything into it for every question as you do your homework and revision questions (and in exams, too). This may seem tedious if you’re doing many questions using the same formula, but it will help you to memorise the formula, and it’s important to get used to doing this in exams to show your working and lessen the chance of making mistakes. The best way to study for maths is to practise doing questions once you’ve completed all your textbook/homework questions, working through past exam papers is the most effective way to prepare for exams. Reading and/or writing notes is generally just a waste of time when it comes to maths (just make sure you know all your formulas!). Always ask your teacher if you don’t understand something in class. If they don’t have time to explain, or you still don’t understand, ask if they can help during lunchtime or after school. Ask your teacher for copies of past papers to help you study for tests and exams. This will give you experience with questions of the same style and level of difficulty as those likely to be in your exam, and gives you an idea of what to expect. Make sure you read every question carefully. Don’t just assume it’s the same as others you have done in the past you might get caught out! Remember to include units (when appropriate) in your final answer to each question (such as $, %, kg, cm, L, etc.) and be careful to round any decimal answers correctly (always write the exact answer first, then if a decimal answer is required round it to 2 decimal places unless the question states otherwise).
