21.01.2022 An Obstructed View Remen Hammond @spacecontainer What’s wrong with this scenario? Are we looking at a broken blind or something beyond it? Can the blind be fixed?... My aim with this painting is to create a visual metaphor for the now critical tensions between global culture and the natural environment. We have a myopic way of looking at things. We screen out anything that is not immediately important.Yetasindividuals we are much more than this scanning system. We have a relationship with the natural environment that is on the whole harmonious. The energies of life, in their forms as light, temperature and air, are streaming through you all at this moment. Reflecting on times past, sometimes shadowed by death, deceit, failure and often joy; this new body of work aims to understand the concept of self-reflection of ones own understanding of the world. And on a broader sense, the way in which the work can act as a conduit for reflection about humanity at large.... Black Mirrors and joyful smiles behind the messiness of life. The works all incorporate paint onto emergency blankets, a tool that is used for survival in times of crisis. Obscured as we are to the truths of the world, Remen Hammond and Joseph Flynns recent works act as windows and mirrors into the exterior and interior worlds we inhabit. Our perspectives are shaped more by what we are told than by what we know to be true. Thus the tension between our views of the world and what is reality differ depending on who we follow on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter etc; even the physical social circles we move in.
