25.01.2022 A happy Friday for a young man moving into permanent housing today, after spending many months sleeping rough and couch surfing. His dedicated worker has just picked up his Home in a Box to make sure her client's first night is a comfortable one, with brand new sheets, pillows, doona, towels, dinner set, kettle, toaster and more. Thank you to our Home in a Box sponsors and donors, we couldn't do it without you! 23.01.2022 "It has been profoundly dispiriting to see, for so many years, the issues of housing affordability/living wage, and homelessness ignored ....And, it has been hard to see the disconnect in people’s mind between housing and homelessness." Words that ring true in both Australia and the USA. #HousingFirst #HousingEndsHomelessness https://www.nytimes.com//homelessness-california-affordabl

23.01.2022 Across Australia, there have been fantastic collaborative efforts to ensure that thousands of people sleeping rough are provided with temporary accommodation to keep them safe. The next step? It has to be a permanent home, with appropriate support for those who need it. Housing people sleeping rough not only saves money, more importantly, it saves lives.

23.01.2022 We love days like today when we get to send a Home in a Box to a mum and three kiddies, who are moving into safe, secure, permanent housing. We wish them all the best as they settle into their new home. #HousingEndsHomelessness

22.01.2022 Yet another report confirms that Sydney and Melbourne are two of the most unaffordable cities in the world. We must increase the supply of affordable housing where it's needed if we are serious about preventing and ending homelessness. #EverybodysHome

21.01.2022 Our Social Justice Small Grants program is now open! Grants up to $10,000 are available for community groups and NFP organisations for seed funding projects that will bring about greater social justice in Australia. The theme for this year is Justice in the digital world. Visit https://bit.ly/31zh8lF Applications due in by 27 April 2020.

20.01.2022 More social and affordable housing will be developed as a result of NHFIC's third social bond issue. This will provide 10 community housing providers funding for 12 years at a low fixed rate, saving them a collective $80 million in interest payments. It will provide capital for new housing development and acquisitions - 2,736 properties including 775 new dwellings. Since March 2019, NHFIC has issued $1.2 billion of social bonds, supporting the delivery of 7,100 new and existing homes built and managed by CHPs. The latest bond issue was oversubscribed three times, reflecting the strong appetite for this emerging asset class from investors, including Australian superannuation funds. This will ultimately result in more social and affordable housing, providing long term economic and social benefits.

20.01.2022 A staggering 405,000 women over 45 years were found to be at risk of homelessness in a study launched yesterday by Housing for the Aged Action Group and Social Ventures Australia. The report by University of Adelaide found that of this group, 240,000 women aged over 55 years were at risk of homelessness. This alarming number demands urgent attention from all of us, including Commonwealth, State and local governments to ensure older women have a safe and affordable home when they need it most. #HW2020 #AtRisk #EndHomelessness https://bit.ly/2DezwIW

19.01.2022 Today is the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery. Slavery is not a thing of the past. Forty million people are estimated to be in slavery today and 1 in 4 victims are children. Around 25 million people are trapped in forced labour and 15 million in forced marriage. Most of us are completely unaware how close we are to slavery, but dig a little deeper into the supply chains of products we use everyday and you'll find it there. In cotton, chocolate, tea, coffee, manufacturing, electronic devices, seafood and more.

19.01.2022 Today is World Social Justice Day. We’d like to give a shout out to the many dedicated people working on projects funded through our social justice grants programs over the last 30 years. Whether you are working to end homelessness, working to combat modern slavery or addressing social justice issues in your community, your efforts are returning dignity to people’s lives and changing our world for the better. Thank you. Head Start Homes, Coffee Ground Hobart, YWCA Canberra, Gunawirra, Zara's House, Jesmond, Mount Barker Community Centre, ACRATH, Anti-Slavery Australia, Ruah, Micah Projects, Cana Farm, Women's Property Initiatives, Asian Women at Work Inc and many more.

18.01.2022 In the last financial year, the Australian Federal Police received 201 reports of modern day slavery, including forced marriage, forced labour, debt bondage and domestic servitude. It is estimated that only 1 in 4 cases are reported.

18.01.2022 Today the Mercy Foundation Australia celebrates 30 years of working to address the causes of poverty and inequality, and restoring dignity to people's lives. Thank you to all our supporters, partners, donors and grantees, and to the people who have given us the privilege of touching their lives. Thank you to the Sisters of Mercy North Sydney, who turned the dream of a social justice foundation into a reality. Your courage, compassion and commitment to social justice inspires us everyday. Happy Mercy Day!

17.01.2022 A must-read article by Karyn Walsh, CEO Micah Projects:

17.01.2022 Nobody should be homeless in a country as rich as ours. We know the solutions and we know the toll it takes on people's lives. Isn't it time we end it? #EverybodysHome #HousingEndsHomelessness

16.01.2022 More affordable and social housing combined with an increase in government support is needed to address the growing number of families experiencing homelessness.

16.01.2022 Older women in our community are living in substandard rentals, having to ration food and live in fear of eviction or rent increases. This is no way for older women who spent their lives building our community to spend their retirement years. #HW2020 #EndHomelessness #AtRisk

14.01.2022 CLOSING SOON! Have you entered the Mercy Youth Awards photo competition? Open to secondary school students across Australia. The theme is Freedom - Ending Modern Slavery. More details here: https://bit.ly/3dkx4MY Competition closes midnight, 3 July 2020 #PhotoCompetition #EndModernSlavery

14.01.2022 A long term study of Housing First confirms that it significantly reduces chronic homelessness for people with mental illness. "These results show that if we choose to do so, we can end chronic homelessness in a way that is life-changing for individuals and enormously beneficial for all of society."

14.01.2022 We're hearing from lots of you - you are worried about eviction: for yourselves, your friends, your family. Please act now: send a direct email by clicking on ...link below! Tell Premiers we need to make sure no renter loses their home during this crisis. A proposal is being put to national cabinet tonight.

13.01.2022 Nobody can live on $40 a day. Nobody should have to choose between paying rent or buying food, or skip meals to make ends meet. The Coronavirus Supplement has prevented homelessness and helped people meet basic living expenses. As more people struggle to find work, it would be cruel to go back to $40 a day. Join the campaign to raise the rate for good: https://raisetherate.org.au #RaiseTheRateForGood

12.01.2022 Applications are now open for our Social Justice Small Grants program. Grants up to $10,000 are available to seed fund community projects that address social justice issues. This year's focus is about creating greater inclusion in the digital world. Visit https://bit.ly/31zh8lF for details. Applications due in by 27 April 2020. #smallgrants

12.01.2022 NHFIC has launched its second bond issue of $315 million. The bond will support the financing of over 2,000 properties across Victoria, NSW, Queensland, Western Australia, and South Australia, including 360 new social and affordable dwellings. NHFIC bonds provide low interest finance to community housing providers. There was over $1.20 billion of demand for the $315 million transaction, clearly illustrating the strong appetite for this type of investment.

12.01.2022 A fantastic announcement from NAB, committing $2 billion to help develop more affordable housing initiatives.

11.01.2022 Yes, modern slavery does exist in Australia. Forced labour, forced marriage, servitude including domestic servitude, deceptive recruitment for labour or services, and in the supply chains of products we use everyday.

11.01.2022 Following a tip off to the AFP by a member of the public, a Darwin man was charged with one count of human trafficking, for allegedly exit-trafficking his wife. Do you know the signs of human trafficking and slavery? Would you know what to do? https://bit.ly/30dsw74

11.01.2022 Rental properties are still highly unaffordable for many of us. Before the Coronavirus supplement, only 9 rental properties out of 69,960 were affordable for a person living on Jobseeker (old Newstart). With the supplement, that number rises to 1,040. We need the supplement to be permanent and we need more social and affordable homes. https://bit.ly/2y1kkMF

10.01.2022 Its a grim picture for older people in private rental - without access to the coronavirus supplement, people are making difficult choice between rent and food

10.01.2022 Increased allowances such as JobSeeker as a result of the Coronavirus supplement has meant that people facing disadvantage can now afford essentials like housing, food, medicine and other needs that we take for granted. It would be cruel and punishing if our income support system goes back to how it was. Nobody can live on $40 a day.

09.01.2022 This is fantastic news!! Congratulations to the NSW Government and homelessness sector for working together to end homelessness for some of our state's most vulnerable people.

08.01.2022 "Amid all the uncertainty and despair in Australia at the moment, there are some bright spots. One such spot is in Adelaide right now, as the COVID-19 pandemic is helping end rough sleeping homelessness...This approach, of knowing the names and needs of every person sleeping rough, needs to be rolled out nationally, we can’t wait for this crisis to be over, we need do it now." #EndHomelessness #AAEH

07.01.2022 Youth homelessness matters. Young people should not be experiencing homelessness. All of us, especially our young people, have a right to and need a safe, secure home. #yhmd2020

07.01.2022 Our Social Justice Small Grants program is currently open. Grants up to $10,000 are available for projects that will help create greater inclusion in the digital world. Visit https://bit.ly/31zh8lF for details. Applications due in by 27 April 2020.

07.01.2022 Today is World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. Traffickers prey on innocent people and exploit them for profit, stripping them of their freedom, dignity and life. You can do this today - ask our government to sign the ILO Convention on Forced Labour. Be informed, know the signs. https://bit.ly/313m6av

07.01.2022 Building more social and affordable housing will boost the economy and provide thousands of families and individuals with the one thing they need more than anything. A home. Join the campaign. #EndHomelessness #HW2020 #EverybodysHome https://everybodyshome.com.au

06.01.2022 The SHARP program will build more affordable housing, create more jobs, stimulate the economy and reduce homelessness. Sounds like a great plan! #EndHomelessness

06.01.2022 A man and woman will face Downing Centre Local Court today charged with forced labour and a number of other charges. A young woman was forced to be a carer and cleaner for the couple and was also forced to work in their business, for long hours with no pay. Her passport was taken, she was told she owed them money and she was prevented from leaving the premises unaccompanied.

03.01.2022 We are now accepting EOIs for our Grants to End Homelessness program. This year we are prioritising projects that end or prevent older women from experiencing homelessness. EOIs are due in by 2 November 2020. Please call us to discuss your project - find out more here: https://bit.ly/3gVdrfX #EndHomelessness
