25.01.2022 #MensHealthWeek On a recent trip to Europe, I took the opportunity to visit several mental health services in a few different countries ('Mind' London / 'SMJ' Paris, etc.). Had casual chats with staff about mental health in their country. However, one of the most interesting chats about mental health came out of nowhere when I visited the Charles Dickens Museum! A staff member and I discussed how Dickens life was defined by apparent mental health problems, how th...is impacted his life, and the influence on his writing. I took the staff member's advice and bought a biography he recommended! Always interested to chat about how mental health has been framed by society over time, the role it plays in artistic expression, and how literature can provide us with a commentary on mental health! #mentalhealth #literature #mhcpartnerships #counselling #Tasmania See more

25.01.2022 Thank you for finding us on Facebook! Check out our website for more info! Because we are not a telephone or online counselling service, we recommend people requiring telephone counselling support to contact Lifeline (131114) or beyondblue (1300224636). For any other enquiries, feel free to send us a message!

24.01.2022 Our work this week focused on brief workplace mental health policy (including accessible suicide prevention and response strategies). Even small businesses are taking a proactive approach to the wellbeing of their staff, acknowledging the importance of a mentally healthy workplace. #mentalhealth #workplace #responsibility https://blackdoginstitute.org.au//how-to-create-a-mentally

24.01.2022 Side note: Our Mental Health Counsellor and Educator, Rick, is volunteering to do some additional presentations with beyondblue in 2019. A considered decision to support one of the most valued mental health organisations in our community! https://www.beyondblue.org.au

22.01.2022 Today has been about reviewing mental state assessment templates and working on a brief CBT training program. Still have a webinar on Somatic Symptom Disorder on the schedule this evening. #somaticsymptomdisorder #mentalhealth #education #CBT

20.01.2022 It was rewarding to have the opportunity to work on an MHFA webcast on 'New Research and Treatments for Eating Disorders', as we continue to develop the MHCP 'Model of Stepped Care for Clients' (to ensure we provide the most appropriate support for our clients in the future). We would also like to say 'thank you' to the participants of a recent Mental Health First Aid course who invited us to assist them to gain their accreditation. We are also excited that, on February 28th..., we will be facilitating another face-to-face component of the 'Blended Mental Health First Aid for Tertiary Students' in Launceston. 2020 has begun in an exciting fashion! If you live in Australia and are experiencing an eating disorder, or expect that a loved one is, support and information can be obtained by contacting the Butterfly Foundation on 1800 33 4673 (8am - midnight). However, if experiencing an immediate crisis, we recommend you contact 000 or Lifeline on 131114. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthfirstaid #MHFA #counselling #blended #tertiary #students #Launceston

19.01.2022 Aust society still has a long way to go! We must ALL be proactive in our willingness to pursue mental health education. If we remain ignorant, we contribute to the social injustice faced by people struggling with #anxiety #depression #psychosis #substancemisuse #mentalillness

18.01.2022 Early last month (before the COVID-19 situation, important safety restrictions, etc.): Completed a visit to the remote Aboriginal community of Imanpa, following an invitation to work with students at Imanpa School. Been meaning for a while to thank the principal, staff and students for a great time! It was a pleasure seeing you all again and working with the fantastic students. Thank you, everybody!

17.01.2022 October is Mental Health Month in Australia. However, the city of #Memphis, Tennessee is home for the next several months (before returning to normal duties in Australia). Today we attended the #OutoftheDarknessWalk - a fantastic, and emotional, #suicideawareness event. It was a beautiful day! Enjoyed sharing stories and having many conversations with people regarding suicide prevention and mental health awareness (especially in the context of this great city)! This includes... meeting actors Jimmy Smit and Jayne Atkinson from #BluffCityLaw - two very friendly and time-generous people. Thank you to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention for letting us participate! [Remember Aussie friends: for immediate crisis support in Aus, call Lifeline 131114 or Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636]

17.01.2022 Thank you to Theresa and Bill, from S&S Counselling, for the recent invite to work with them reviewing a webinar on changing identity and mental health issues in ADF veterans. Took the opportunity whilst outside of Australia, and during this month of remembrance, to visit the Memphis National Cemetery to pay respect and reflect on the challenges ALL veterans, endure. #counselling #respect #veterans #identity #mentalhealth #Australia #Memphis #MemphisNationalCemetery

17.01.2022 Currently focusing on #DomesticViolence Awareness training. Workplaces must be encouraged to: engage in domestic violence awareness training, develop appropriate policies and procedures for supporting staff, and ensure ease of access to confidential professional services. #DVAwareness in communities and workplaces MUST go hand-in-hand with ongoing #education and appropriate policy development / enforcement.

15.01.2022 Rick is in Brisbane this week, but we are also excited to be communicating with local health professionals for slightly expanding the individual counselling arm of our service in 2019! We look forward to reconnecting with familiar clients as well as meeting new ones! Whatever counselling service you choose in 2019, MHCP reminds people to ensure that their counsellor has appropriate qualifications, is registered with a professional body, and has professional indemnity insurance. All the best for 2019!

14.01.2022 It was a pleasure working with CSU students who completed their Blended Mental Health First Aid for Tertiary Students course yesterday. Thank you for your enthusiasm and valued contributions. Good luck with your careers in nursing!

13.01.2022 MENTAL HEALTH TRAINING FOR EDUCATORS: As trained educators with experience working in schools, we understand the challenges that impact the mental health of teachers. With the growing attention on the role educators can play in the mental wellbeing of students, teachers need to be supported to manage their own mental health. MHCP understands that the mental health of teachers (one of societys most valued professions) is often overlooked, resulting in high rates of stress, bu...rnout and general psychological distress. We are excited to be offering this research-informed training that combines mental health theory with the real-life experiences of teachers, culminating in the six core elements of teacher wellbeing (we call it the Teacher Wellbeing Fleximap). Ultimately, teachers are provided with a roadmap for maintaining good mental health, in a profession with substantial risks to personal wellbeing, so that they can continue to make a positive difference in the lives of their students! #mentalhealth #education #teaching #training #schools #wellbeing #counselling

13.01.2022 Yesterday, for World Bipolar Day, we spent time making donations to, and signing up for membership with, several organisations with an interest in bipolar awareness and service provision. We also spent time thinking about the clients we have worked with who have been living with bipolar disorder. There are plenty of opportunities out there to learn about bipolar disorder, support causes, and access services lets eliminate stigma and promote the fact that management is possible! http://www.worldbipolarday.org/about-wbd.html

13.01.2022 Very easy to underestimate the damage that inappropriate or ill-informed language can do, especially as we all fight to destigmatise mental health. Source: Mindframe. #mentalhealth #stigma #ongoing

13.01.2022 Australian society still has a long way to go! It is easy to acknowledge the stigma associated with mental health problems, just as it is easy to suggest we dont agree with the related discrimination. However, unless we are PROACTIVE in our willingness to pursue mental health EDUCATION, our ignorance can contribute to the social injustice faced by people struggling with #anxiety #depression #psychosis #substancemisuse #mentalillness #trauma

13.01.2022 As a counsellor, I have met clients who suffer the real effects of derogatory language in regard to mental health. As trainers, we have met people who simply never realised that their language either helps to FIGHT stigma or REINFORCE it in the community. Please remember that the language we use when describing mental health may affect whether or not a friend, relative, colleague or fellow community member feels comfortable seeking help. We all play a role! Source: Mindframe

12.01.2022 If you are a tertiary student living in #Tasmania aiming to complete the face-to-face component of their 'Blended Mental Health First Aid' course, we are running a half day session in #Launceston this Monday (22nd July). We only have a few spots remaining, so please contact us to express your interest. The 'Blended Mental Health First Aid Course for Tertiary Students' is a combination of eLearning plus a half day of face-to-face teaching. The course is for tertiary students. The focus of the course is how to help fellow students, though course participants will learn #mentalhealth first aid skills that can be applied to help any adult. #MentalHealthFirstAid #MHFA #tertiary #student

11.01.2022 Thank you to Lucas and Evi Jansen for the invite to the fantastic R U OK? Breakfast! This day reminds us that we can all play a role in suicide prevention (whether it is by offering emotional support or educating others about professional support options). Appreciated the unexpected tour of local murals, whilst discussing things like the relationship between mental health promotion and actual service accessibility. Enjoyed explaining the plans for MHCP, including an exciting little side project... https://www.ruok.org.au/findhelp

09.01.2022 Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to work with these very fine nursing students on their 'Blended Mental Health First Aid for Tertiary Students' course. It was a great pleasure to discuss mental health with an enthusiastic and professional group of people! #mentalhealth #MHFA #MentalHealthFirstAid #nursing #Australia #CharlesSturtUniversity #Tasmania #Launceston #MHCP #BlendedMHFA #tertiary

09.01.2022 This photo was taken earlier this month whilst in the Northern Territory on unrelated work, wearing a new CLove cap! During this time when many industries are facing extreme challenges, it is important to acknowledge the invaluable work of organisations such as Culinary Love who support, and advocate for, the #mentalhealth of vulnerable workers. Culinary Love (www.culinarylove.org) is an American non-profit organisation, but we encourage our Aussie and U.S. friends who work in hospitality to check out their page! Aussie friends please note that support and crisis services advertised are based in the U.S. and you should continue to use Australian support options, such as those listed here: www.healthdirect.gov.au/mental-health-helplines

08.01.2022 We have facilitated many online Mental Health First Aid training sessions in recent months (amongst other workshops). Thank you to everybody for your participation and enthusiasm! Spreading some important messages about mental health in the community, and developing practical skills for helping those in need. Great work! #mentalhealth #mentalhealthfirstaid #MHFA #training #awareness

08.01.2022 A lack of PROACTIVITY when it comes to mental health education can reinforce #stigma. Lets encourage our peers to be positive about the importance of mental health conversations, PRIORITISE mental health TRAINING, and encourage help-seeking behaviours. If your workplace or education provider is not prioritising mental health training and awareness, ask why... https://m.youtube.com/watch?reload=9&v=Y-qglTwGktY

06.01.2022 The language we use, across genders, can reinforce and precede unhealthy attitudes that culminate in many forms of abuse. We all have a responsibility to acknowledge our role. The Stop it at the Start campaign is an important initiative: respect.gov.au

05.01.2022 Thoughts have been with fellow Australians back home facing horrible bushfires recently, including the brave men and women fighting them. Thank you to Theresa and Bill, from S&S Counselling, for the invite to recently review a webinar about responding to trauma, including that triggered by natural disasters. Visited the Memphis Fire Museum and, even though the focus is different, it was the best place in the city to reflect on the work being done by valued firefighters, whilst paying respect to the loss of property and life. #counselling #thankful #appreciative #trauma #respect #loss #Australia #bushfires #thoughts #mentalhealth #Memphis #FireMuseumofMemphis

05.01.2022 We have facilitated many online sessions lately, but the introduction of the Blended Mental Health First Aid Community course began with this trial a couple of weeks ago. We had some special guest participants! Thanking you all one last time for your contributions, enthusiasm and patience! Congratulations for receiving your qualification! #MentalHealthFirstAid #MHFA #mentalhealthtraining #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness

05.01.2022 Is your workplace, EAP or on-site counselling service prioritising relevant, targeted wellbeing training? If not, encourage them to be more proactive! Wellbeing training is an important preventative measure for promoting a healthy workplace and, when part of a broader mental health framework, can help avoid psychological distress that results in lost time, injury, low productivity and compensation claims. Contact us for more info about the training we offer at MHCP!... #workplace #mentalhealth #training #workerscompensation #proactive #lessreactive

03.01.2022 (Rick): I was enthusiastic about being interviewed for this ABC Life article on anxiety for two reasons: Firstly, even though a mental health professional should be at their absolute(!) healthiest before assisting people, many counsellors / psychologists are actually individuals with lived experience of mental health challenges. Mental health counsellors / psychologists are not likely to disclose their past personal experiences to clients, for ethical reasons, but it is w...hy many have an interest in the field in the first place. What is important is they have professional training in evidence-based mental health interventions, and have experienced long-term recovery. (Knowing this may make mental health professionals appear more approachable for some reluctant people who are seeking help for the first time). Secondly, people need different kinds of support from family and friends when experiencing mental health challenges, like anxiety. Whilst there are common strategies for helping, there is no one shoe fits all approach because the experience can differ from individual to individual. It is best to ask the person what they feel works for them personally, if you are hoping to assist. #mentalhealth #anxiety #support #howtohelp

03.01.2022 Have just received confirmation that we will be adding 'MHFA for Non-Suicidal Self-Injury' to our course schedule for 2019. We will be facilitating the four-hour course with some clients beginning in January. https://mhfa.com.au//launch-mental-health-first-aid-non-su

02.01.2022 Spent World Suicide Prevention Day at a screening of Palm Beach (themes of changing identity, depression and friendship), becoming an Associate of Suicide Prevention Australia, and signing the National Communications Charter. Suicide affects everybody (we all have a role to play in raising awareness and encouraging conversation). #worldsuicidepreventionday #palmbeachfilm #nationalcommunicationcharter

02.01.2022 Recently spent two fantastic weeks in the remote Indigenous community of Imanpa, Northern Territory, working with the students at Imanpa School. Very much enjoyed facilitating individual wellbeing and counselling sessions, especially with the young fellas! We discussed thoughts and feelings, how emotions are expressed, and regulation strategies. Great kids! Lindsay Handrickan was also at Imanpa School. She facilitated a different, but connected, program: Art Wellbeing sessio...ns, helping the students express themselves therapeutically and creatively! Thank you so very much to the fantastic principal (Kandi), Teacher Assistant (Rob), and the visiting staff at Imanpa School for being so welcoming! Thanks also to the students and community members! #counselling #wellbeing #Aboriginal #mentalhealth #youngpeople #Indigenous #students #Art #Wellbeing #therapeutic #creative See more

02.01.2022 Appreciated the opportunity to be one of the people interviewed for this ABC article on men's mental health during the coronavirus crisis. - Rick https://www.abc.net.au//how-men-can-find-support-/12271452 #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mensmentalhealth
