24.01.2022 Two new episodes of The Messenger! We've released the documentaries I made for ABC RN Earshot about Aziz going to Switzerland through podcast as well (thanks to Earshot!). Four years since Aziz and I first spoke, these will be the last episodes. Incredibly, Aziz leaves Manus temporarily and travels to Geneva for a human rights award and to campaign for everyone's freedom. But what will he do next? https://www.wheelercentre.com//the-me/12-flight-from-manus https://www.wheelercentre.com//the/13-a-stranger-in-geneva

23.01.2022 We've been releasing little updates from Aziz in the last couple of weeks. But if you are just learning about the situation on Manus, and want to find out how it got to this point, listen back to the whole series, which tracks his time on Manus, and his life before then.

21.01.2022 I wrote an article for the Walkley Magazine about the ethics of journalism, and who owns the story. And happily, I got to speak to some wonderful journalists about the way they work. Janet Malcolm's book 'The Journalist and the Murder', begins with a famous first line: Every journalist who is not too stupid or too full of himself to notice what is going on knows that what he does is morally indefensible. I think there's a little more to it than that... https://medium.com/the-walkley/keeping-it-real-c7e9513ae9ed

21.01.2022 Yunus lives in Springvale, Melbourne. He's a Rohingya man from in Myanmar, who came to Australia by boat in 2012. Last year, his mother, brothers and sisters and their families fled their village into Bangladeshamong about 700,000 Rohingya who crossed the border within a few months. I've been hanging out with him a lot lately for SBS. We're making a documentary on Instagram, launching this weekend! It will feature photos and videos by Chris Hopkins and from Yunus's younger brother Jares and GMB Akash in the refugee megacamp, as well as illustrations by Matt Huynh. Please follow and share! https://www.instagram.com/sbs.online.documentaries

19.01.2022 The 'how are you today' sound installation continues as part of Eavesdropping at the Potter Museum of Art. Everyday in the gallery there is a different ten minutes of sound just recorded on Manus Island. It's nearly halfway through and we're now up to nearly 6 hours in total. Today's recording is by Behrouz Boochani, from a conversation he had late last night. You can see the full archive here https://liquidarchitecture.org.au/microsites/manus-project

19.01.2022 I am in Geneva with Aziz, recording his surreal journey from Manus to attend the Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders. It's very strange that he is here. We also just released a new episode of The Messenger, so please listen! It is about the time the old detention centre was closed and the men refused to leave: https://www.wheelercentre.com//the/11-we-lived-as-a-nation

18.01.2022 The full archive from the Manus Recording Project is now online... 14 hours, recorded daily over three-and-a-half months.

18.01.2022 I'm proud to say that tonight is the official launch of Eavesdropping, at the Potter Museum of Art. The exhibition is on until 28 October, and you should come! I've been working on a sound installation for the exhibitionsix men in detention on Manus Island are recording the sounds of their day, and we play their recordings in the gallery. The recording changes everyday for 13 weeks. The Manus Recording Project Collective is Abdul Aziz Muhamat, Behrouz Boochani, Farhad Bandesh, Samad Abdul, Kazem Kazemi and Shamindan Kanapathi, all in Lorengau, and André Dao, Jon Tjhia and me in Melbourne. https://eavesdropping.exposed//manus-recording-project-col

16.01.2022 We've just finished the first part of the SBS online documentary, 'She Called Me Red', about Yunus in Melbourne and his family in the refugee mega-camp on the Bangladesh/Myanmar border. It coincided with the UN releasing a report describing the violence last year as genocide. Please check it out! You can view it retrospectively in grid-view starting from the bottom right corner of the account, and through the daily Instagram stories pinned at the top of the project. https://www.instagram.com/sbs.online.documentaries/

07.01.2022 New project! https://manusrecordingproject.com Every day for a month, you will receive a text message with a new ten-minute audio recording from Farhad Bandesh, Farhad Rahmati, Samad Abdul, Shamindan Kanapathi, Thanush Selvraj or Yasin Abdallah. These men, seeking asylum by boat, were forcibly transferred to Manus Island by the Australian government nearly seven years ago. Now, they are held in hotels or detention centres in Port Moresby, Melbourne or Brisbane.... This is a new work by the Manus Recording Project Collective, following How Are You Today (2018). As a subscriber, you’ll receive a daily text message containing a link to each day’s recording. The site will display some additional information: the number of kilometres between you and the person who made the recording, and the number of minutes, hours, or days that have elapsed since the recording was made. Commissioned and presented by Liquid Architecture. Supported by the City of Melbourne COVID-19 Arts Grants, Behind the Wire and Public Office.

07.01.2022 Here is another update from Aziz. He left these messages this afternoon, after the PNG Supreme Court's decision rejecting the case that supplies and essential services must be returned to the detention centre.

05.01.2022 Lives in Limbo is a series of articles and data stories investigating what's happened to the 3127 people Australia forcibly transferred to Manus Island and Nauru back in 2013 and 2014. I've been working on it with Hannah Ryan and others at The Guardian. More stories to follow each day: https://www.theguardian.com/australia/series/lives-in-limbo

04.01.2022 The Wait podcast has its own feed, now it's finished playing via The Guardian. Please subscribe and share! Check out the website for a whole lot of photos and more information about Mozhgan and all the people Nicole and Mozh met in the series. https://thewaitpodcast.com

03.01.2022 'She Called Me Red', the SBS documentary about Yunus and his family in the Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh, has started up again on Instagram. I've been speaking with Yunus for several months as he tries to move to Geelong to meet the conditions of his temporary protection visa, and keep supporting his many family members living in the world's largest refugee camp... though the monsoon season. He's got a lot on his plate. https://www.instagram.com/sbs.online.documentaries/

03.01.2022 Seven and a half years after escaping his village in Myanmar, Imran Mohammad made it to Chicago. Here's part of that story, made with Imran and Elyse Blennerhassett for BBC World Service and Sundance Institute. Features dancing and haircutting at the same time! https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w3csz5dz

03.01.2022 I've been spending time at a cafe in Springvale called the Rohingya Bazaar, meeting people and talking about their lives. See this illustrated long read on SBS, with stunning portraits by Tia Kass. It's all thanks to the hard work of Shawfikul Islam, who you'll meet as you read the story: https://www.sbs.com.au//life/culture/feature/faces-rohingya

02.01.2022 The Wait podcast is out today! It's a five-part narrative show about the situation for refugees in Indonesia. 01.01.2022 I was on Manus Island in November and December last year, when the men were evicted from Australia's immigration detention centre, and taken to three new detention centres instead. It's been a long time coming, but here's my article about it, just published in Harper's Magazine: https://harpers.org//no-exit-australian-immigration-manus/
