25.01.2022 AllMusic Review by Ken Dryden The late Ahmed Abdul-Malik was best known to jazz listeners as a bassist with Thelonious Monk, Randy Weston, Coleman Hawkins, and ...many others. He made a few records as a leader, with this one being his most exotic and also the hardest to find. The Brooklyn native was of Sudanese descent; in addition to playing bass on this interesting blend of Middle Eastern instruments with those from the world of jazz, he also plays oud, the forerunner to the lute. The musicians on Malik's eight originals vary from track to track. On the mournful "La Ibky (Don't Cry)," Malik's oud shares the spotlight with a tenor sax (either Benny Golson or Johnny Griffin) plus trumpeter Lee Morgan. "Rooh (The Soul)" features the 72-string kanoon (which is sort of a brittle sounding and much smaller harp) played by Ahmed Yetman, along with Malik's arco bass and the droning violin of Naim Karacand. The Middle Eastern instruments are absent during "Searchin'," which is sort of a hard bop vehicle featuring trombonist Curtis Fuller and Jerome Richardson on flute, along with the tenor sax. "Takseem (Solo)" omits the jazz instruments; the slowness of the variations of the music and rather piercing vocal make it harder for Western ears to comprehend. Not a release of interest to everyone but, for the most part, this fusion of vastly different styles of music is quite enjoyable; it's obvious from the start that the musicians were enjoying themselves as it was recorded. This long out print LP will be difficult to locate. #vinyl #microgroovesvinyl #ahmedabdulmalik #eastmeetswest #middleeasternjazz #oud #leemorgan #bennygolson #johnnygriffin #curtisfuller #jazz See more

21.01.2022 Amazon Review: William Z. MorphisDecember 2, 2017 5.0 out of 5 stars SLEEPER ALBUM 60's JAZZ This was a very underappreciated album when it came out. I believe... listeners did not know how to relate to Ramsey Lewis with orchestration and vocals. That was very unfortunate for them as the orchestra and vocals along with the improvisation by Lewis on the keys provided a solid 60's jazz ambiance. I bought the original vinyl album when it was released and still have it. His performance of 'The Shadow of Your' Smile on this album is just outstanding and 'Girl Talk' gives the feel of the 1960's. #vinyl #microgroovesvinyl #ramsylewis #themoviealbum #richardevans #ramseylewistrio #jazz #chessrecords See more

21.01.2022 This is the first record made by a unique band, unique because of the versatility of its members and for the brand of jazz they play. Each member of the Group p...lays many different instruments and to see them playing is quite an experience. They move around creating music which varies from hard-swinging jazz; to jazz/rock; to beautiful melodic sounds; to very exciting exotic percussion things; to the more contemporary avenues of creative use of electronic devices. Every member of the Group has paid his dues, sweated his music out over the years in pubs, clubs and sessions all over the country. The original Galapagos Duck has grown out of these experiences. The band was chosen to support the recent Nina Simone tour in Melbourne and Sydney, and to my mind I've never seen a local support act received with as much enthusiasm. This album comes very close to their live performances which can be heard at The Basement in Sydney, the finest jazz room in Australia. For those who have heard the band in live performances, I know you will enjoy the music on this album, for those who haven't, I hope you can catch them some time [extract HORST LIEPOLT, Jazz Editor-Sound Blast/Music Maker]. #vinyl #microgroovesvinyl #galapagosduck #ebonyquills #jazz #jazzfunk #aussiejazz

15.01.2022 AllMusic Review by Thom Jurek Miles Away is the second offering from Madlib's Last Electro-Acoustic Space Jazz & Percussion Ensemble. The first, Summer Suite, w...as only available in limited quantities in Japan. The title here is an obvious nod to Miles Davis, but it’s only a nod. Each of these ten tracks is dedicated to a jazz artist -- but Miles isn’t among them. The sources are less obvious except to hardcore fans of '70s jazz as it met soul, funk, African rhythms, and Middle Eastern and Indo-Asian sounds. The heavy percussion and drum mantra that opens the set on Derf" (for Derf Reklaw) is the first of many shape-shifting identities this music brings to the listener. It evolves within a minute into a soulful, mantra-like spiritual jazz tome for flute, piano, and imaginative drum and percussion interplay. Waltz for Woody" (for Woody Shaw) uses the late trumpeter’s sense of modally oriented post-bop as a kickoff with rumbling basses, shimmering cymbals and snares, the sounds of steel drums, spacious darkly tinged pianos, and plenty of reverb -- without once using a trumpet. Shades of Phil" (for Phil Ranelin) employs layers of spaced-out synths, groove-laden basslines, repetitive piano, and popping hand percussion and drums to create a music that echoes the spirit of music that Ranelin’s Tribe made in Detroit during the ‘70s. Mystic Voyage" (for Roy Ayers) is one of the most appealing tracks here, as bell and vibraphone timbres and plucked strings from a variety of sources -- including harp -- are nocturnal, funky, and cosmic. The most experimental-sounding piece is the glorious Tones for Larry Young, which embodies -- via the layering of organ sounds and spacious distortion -- the spirit of his work with both Lifetime and his groundbreaking late work on Blue Note. The set closes with its finest moment, The Trane and the Pharoah" (for John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders), a souled-out spiritual jazz number that moves the basic changes from A Love Supreme up an octave and adds loads of marimbas, flutes, organs, synths, and electric bass to a hypnotic groove that constantly evolves. #vinyl #milesaway #thelastelectroacousticspacejazzandpercussionensemble See more

12.01.2022 AllMusic Review by Ken Dryden Drummer Dave Bailey's third and final LP for Epic is a quintet session that is much like his earlier two sextet dates for the labe...l, with an invited audience witnessing the studio recording. He has a completely new supporting cast, including two very underappreciated musicians: the tragically short-lived tenor saxophonist Frank Haynes and trumpeter Bill Hardman. Also on hand are the veteran bassist Ben Tucker and the somewhat-obscure pianist Billy Gardner. Tucker's "Comin' Home Baby" is probably better known for the vocal version with lyrics by singer Bob Dorough, but evidently the music came first, as this instrumental version swings hard and doesn't have the rock flavor that Dorough's (and other later vocal) versions have. Haynes' big-toned tenor sax and Hardman's muted trumpet are the highlights of the relaxed but brisk swinger "Two Feet in the Gutter." Frank Foster's "Shiny Stockings," written for Count Basie and a jazz standard, has an economical swinging piano solo by young pianist Gardner that is at times economical à la Basie and at other times has the block-chord feeling of Red Garland. Tucker also contributed "Coffee Walk," a tasty mid-tempo blues. While this record is just a notch beneath Dave Bailey's earlier dates for Epic -- One Foot in the Gutter and Gettin' into Somethin' -- it is definitely worth picking up. #vinyl #microgroovesvinyl #davebailey #2feetinthegutter #jazzdrummer See more

10.01.2022 AllMusic Review by Michael Katz The first of many live recordings made of Mingus's touring band of 1964, most in Europe, it's got one of his strongest lineups: ...Eric Dolphy (reeds), Johnny Coles (tpt), Clifford Jordan (ts), Jaki Byard (p), and Dannie Richmond (d). Every performance on the tour is worth listening to. #vinyl #microgroovesvinyl #charlesmingus #townhallconcert #ericdolphy #cliffordjordan #johnnycoles #jakibyard #dannierichmond #jazz #bass See more

10.01.2022 An excellent album of funky drumbreaks cut by a drummer who's a legend among funk fans, but who hardly ever gets mentioned in history books of jazz. Les was a... little known LA player, but he had a monster approach to the kit and most of the few albums he cut are very in demand for fans of a good funky drum break. This one's a stellar session that mixes together straight funk with some strong choppy fusion numbers and it was issued on the tiny Dobre label, which came out with some excellent obscure sides during the 70s. Raul De Souza's on trombone, Milcho Leview plays piano, and Robby Robinson plays plenty of nice electric keyboards. Includes the break-heavy tracks "Moondial" and "Funk It!", the jazz dance cut "Canned Heat Suite", the choppy funky "Bacchanal", and the great groover "Kaballa". 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc. #vinyl #microgroovesvinyl #lesdemerle #transfusion #drums #jazz #drumbreaks #fusion #funk See more

10.01.2022 Amazon: Vinyl LP pressing. Digitally remastered edition of this long-lost Funk masterpiece. Every track from start to finish is top notch, featuring beautiful i...nstrumentation and complex arrangements. Stanton Davis was mentored by the great Jazz legend George Russell and later formed the Ghetto Mysticism Band in Boston, MA. He and the group performed exciting live shows in the city all throughout the `70s. Brighter Days showcases an array of up-tempo Jazz Funk stylings, from the fast-paced fury of "Things Cannot Stop Forever" to the deep space sound of "Space A Nova I" to the atmospheric instrumentation of "Play Sleep". #vinyl #microgroovesvinyl #stantondavisghettomysticism #brighterdays #numberedlimitededition #trumpet #flugelhorn #jazzfunk #spiritualjazz #hijazz #masterpiece See more

07.01.2022 AllMusic Review by Jo-Ann Greene It's the sheer exuberance of it all that first smacks listeners straight across the head, that and the pure mayhem that careens... wildly from the opening shout to the closing note. A musical roller coaster, a tear through a musical house of mirrors, along the way Madness grab streamers of ska and rocksteady and stuff them gleefully into their baggy trousers. Actually the trousers were yet to come, but One Step Beyond dragged listeners kicking and screaming into a wacky world of their own creation, where Prince Buster slams into swan-clad ballerinas and boats on the Nile, where "Chipmunks are Go!" and the sun never set on the "Land of Hope and Glory." The Nutty Boys was an apt alternate moniker for the band, as they rocket madly through this set, all wicked grins and giggles, smug with their own cleverness and winking slyly at their own goofy musical jokes. Who could be so po-faced as to not join in? The set has lost none of its freshness, appeal or ability to surprise over the years. It still sounds like nothing else on the planet, even though it's influences were waved pennant like from the band's hands -- Buster, of course, and the sheer freneticism of early Jamaican ska and punk's raging fire. And, just as evident, English music hall, Augustus Pablo's Far Eastern sound, Brit Beat pop, the slinkier side of swing and the funnier side of classical ballet, military marches and Dad's Army, funfairs and keyboard riffs on an Oktoberfest tour of the German beerhalls, all this and more were poured straight into the mix and decanted into the Madness brew. There's nary a pause for breath, the wilding never stops, even when they slow the tempos and darken the moods. Amidst this kaleidoscope everyone has their personal faves, be it the trio of Buster tributes of "One Step Beyond," "The Prince" and "Madness," the poppier Sixties Brit flavored hat trick of "In the Middle of the Night," "Bed and Breakfast" and "Mummy's Boy," the heavy on the atmospheres of "My Girl," "Nightboat to Cairo" and "Razorblade Alley" or the wacky batch of "Tarzan's Nuts," "Swan Lake" and "Chipmunks." #vinyl #madness #onestepbeyond #pop #ska #stiffrecordings See more

05.01.2022 Not long to go funky folks! Come and get some bargains!!!

03.01.2022 Micro Grooves is on the move! Thanks to Bret for allowing me to carry on the Micro Grooves name and business. Sure the stock is a rare find (but you already know that) but Bret is passing on his vast vinyl knowledge to me! I’m pretty excited about it too. I’m a lover of music particularly jazz, funk, soul & blues. I play piano/keys, but dabble on drums, guitar & bass too. I’m in my final year of high school and have my own secret vinyl contacts in Chicago as well as Bret’...s he’s passed on to me. My parents are supporting me in this new business venture wholeheartedly (they reckon it’s about time I earned a few bucks of my own). And what a bonus that it’s dealing in something I love. I do have exams to deal with, but as soon as Micro Grooves has settled into its new home, I’ll be opening the doors for the first time. Stay tuned! Jackson @ Dianella, Western Australia See more
