16.01.2022 With the Cat fully loaded and everyone on board we were set for departure on the 2020 big balls fishing tour.. Heading through the north entrance armed with steakburgers on our way to the Swains we were greeted by a stiff south westerly a perfect assisted swell match for the mighty Mikat and the trip was still almost as smooth as a babies bottom . After an 11 hr steam through the night we dropped the anchor in Sand shoe reef to have breakfast and rig the rods ready for th...e battles we were surely dropping into .. the fish didn’t disappoint for the boys with big ball sinkers , some solid numbers of red throat emperor, trout, tuskies a few nice size reds a baby black marlin and an enormous wahoo that put our gear to the test and managed to deck the beast weighing well over 25 kegs.. The weather was also a gift from above for the week with most days being complete glass outs and you wouldn't believe it Yep ... the dories even went in the drink for a few Hours . So freezers full of fish , bellies Full of Cooks Cuisine sidelined with a few empty Scotch bottles we fairwelled the Hunting grounds and headed for home . Good fun had by all ! The Mikat Team .

15.01.2022 GT vs Chef =Queensland Grouper!!

15.01.2022 People come from far and wide to fish the Swains , Pete's group is made up of boys from Western Australia, Victoria , New South Wales and Queensland but all come together to fish the Barrier reef hard. Top notch gear and prawns on the platter , time to hit the water. Heading to new ground to explore this massive picture perfect ecosystem we target the 5 star eating fish , coral trout. On the morning tide it was like shooting fish in a barrel with solid Trout averaging 2kg and... elbow slapper Redthroat chewing hard, Steve up the bow hooks up on the retrieve and boats the first Spanish Mackerel for the trip. A 70+ fish day to kick off the week. With good results in the new area we set out again on the same tide but didn't get the same bite so we venture up to another shoal 3 mile away and on the troll we hook up. A nice Spanish on the diver makes up for an awesome afternoon snack for the boys with Darrin making some oven baked fish pieces. Of a night the boys fished hard and got the results , Dave and Slady never failed to find the fish , seeking them out from every corner and crevous in the reef. Hitting everything from Redthroat on floaters to bottoms fished baits for Maori cod and Trout. Darryl going for the Apex predators puts down a livebait and after 10minutes of no result he finds out a nice Maori cod inhaled his livey and ticked that off his bucketlist. Morning comes and hit the 30m water and from there the fishing was mad. Fish popping up left ,right and centre. Steve hooking up to a 6-7kg cobia and Pete landing a red emperor , it was alive. A 100 fish day was in sight and by the arvo it was achieved. On the jigs Duncan and Ash did the damage. Back to back trout up to 4kg and Ash achieving a solid Spanish Mackerel on jig and later through the week smashing a nice Red around 60+cm mark, and epic experience for the WA Boy. Duncan was on fire with the Samaki Sugarbaby jigging fish up one after another. A flat out week and achieving well over 400 fish makes the best memories for even the old veterans like Grant and Dave. Quoting " Best fishing experience they have been on" makes us feel privileged to share the Magic of Mikat with all our groups. A great group of Fishos with a great sense of humour. The Mikat team will catch you again next year guys for another unforgettable trip. Cheers , the Mikat Crew.

13.01.2022 21st of September was the start of the 10 day charter to the Swains. Some new faces to Mikat and some that have been on multiple charters and also my family I originally chartered Mikat with before becoming deckhand. Having a great catch up with everyone from home we throw ropes and steam out to the fishing grounds. First day was a settler for the boys with 15-20knots giving us a fast drift pattern. Dan's first cast with the micro-jig gets hammered on the new PE1-3 setup. New...Continue reading

12.01.2022 360 degree GT action !!!

11.01.2022 Friday evening has finally arrived. Stores loaded , Simmo's boys collected terminal tackle - check . Destination Saumarez Reef . After a lumpy trip across to the Bunker group , we tucked in at big Bay Heron for the night , a morning fish and to buy some time for weather to pass . Next leg , 130 nm to Saumarez. After arriving at 2 am , some of us were too excited to sleep so out came the deadbaits and tackle troll rigs in preparation. Skirts , X raps , Yozuris, Big Chiefs a...nd FkinHellMates were the selected sacrifices to be made to the depths . It wasn't long before the natives woke and the reel rachets were screaming . Lures were smashed to bits by the resident Dogtooth Tuna , Yellow Fin Tuna and Green Jobies . Mostly ranging in weight from 5 to 20 Kegs , each and every fish was a healthy specimen . During trolls some top new country was found so bottom bashing was the next line of attack . Jobfish , Coronation trout and Japanese Sea bream were up on the Bounty but not coming easy due to the Sharks . These menaces were winning the battles with either stealing the take or snipping the tackle 50% of drops , tough fishing it was , but rewarding when you do win one . A memorable moment for Mick was rigging up 80gr microjig for 1st time ever drop , sending to bottom and not 4 or 5 actions later , bang ! He had a fight from Hell on his hands , gain 10m lose 30m gain 5m lose 20 and so on . When surfaced this beast resembled a 40kg Dogtooth Tuna but with 5 half moon chunks missing , thanks to the 6ft grey suits . All in all , fun was definitely had at Sam albeit at a major tackle / lure / skirt expense . Next leg of the journey saw us steaming east into Swains for a sunrise arrival after the 2am departure. The lures were greeted with a whole different menu of captives, willie nailing a snodger Wahoo and mick a sizeable Spaniard . The coming days saw a good bounty of our bnb reef fish to round off a Top trip . Many thanks to Simmo's Lads for making this all possible and putting in the big days ps - fisho of trip ( Dr Johnny aka shark assassin ) The Mikat Team .

10.01.2022 Hummocky Island... Top little shelter from Sth East winds . Last nights Anchorage

09.01.2022 A quick taste of jigging action from this season, the jigs doing the damage as always!

08.01.2022 Back again are Steve's group of 6 and also the new Fellas from Griffith. Knowing the routine the boys don't muck around , rods in racks, tackle setup and superb conditions we head out whilst chewing on fresh Endeavour prawns and chase the beautys of The Great Barrier. Awesome trip out we start on the Western edge where we've been smashing into the Trout. Amongst the Trout we hit patches of really nice quality Venus Tuskfish and Redthroat around the 50-55cm bracket. A standard... first day on the Swains. On the troll through the week the Halco laser pros were smashing it , with a mix of mackerel species , Yellowfin tuna and Macktuna made for some great fun travelling from one spot to another, at one stage the boys were fighting a Yellowfin when it got airborne with a 100kg whaler shark chasing it left right and centre. The boys successfully landed the fish that was dished up by chef Darrin. On the drift the boys hit massive variety of species from cobia and Green jobfish to Blue Maori cod and longnose emperor. Amongst the mixed species Steve and Al struck gold both nailing solid Reds around 7-8kg. Garth and Chicken getting their first ever Swains reef Red emperor too made for a great week drift fishing the deep water. Of a night the boys would fish and smack a few mixed species , Redthroat were the dominant catch of the arvo and after dark. Todd staying up and fishing between the sharks hooks up hard on a good fish. Coming put the dark and onto the duckboard was a nice cobia around 6kg. Todd tried his lucky in the shallower lagoon on the GTs but couldn't get a turn on the beasts of the shallows, still made for an unreal experience basically hand feeding giant trevally. Running low on beer and the end of the week near the battle wounded bunch don't give up. Fishing hard the last day and getting a good number of fish to smash their previous year out of the water, The boys were stoked and go home with unreal memories and sights that will always be appreciated. Cheers, The Mikat Crew.

07.01.2022 Glen's group are back again this year after an awesome trip last year getting into the Spanish Mackerel and big quantities of trout, keen for another crack we hit the water and feed the boys up with some fresh local prawns and some iced down beers. Starting on the western edge we get the ice breakers of the trip and hit some 30m water where the coral trout were on the chew , through the day the sharks found us but managed to get a decent catch before they came around. From th...Continue reading

05.01.2022 The mixed Queensland boys are first timers aboard Mikat. With plenty of reef fishing experience , Simon's gang are ready for an awesome week catching Trout , Red Throat Emperor and many more solid reef species. Calm trip out makes it easy for the boys to get some rest. First day was a settler where the boys worked out how we fish on Mikat and weights of lead to run. A mixed bag of Lipper , Coral Trout and Tuskfish were the ice breakers for the week. Hitting the western edge ...gave the boys a good start on Trout with Simon boating a 60+cm job early in the day. Once the Taxman packs set in we decided to head to the eastern side to take advantage of these glass out conditions. Trolling over it was a matter of minutes on a 10m rise where we hooked up and landed the first Spanish Mackerel for the trip. Taking like to the bright Dorado and bright green coloured lures. Arriving in the arvo on the eastern edge we drop the pick where the boys have some fun over the night. Matty the nocturnal one, hunted his fish at night , with a livey put back with the boys having a beer , his rod goes off! The fellas insisting it being a shark, matty hangs in there and brings it boat side , a solid Spanish Mackerel well over 20kg nailed at the twilight hours. The Eastern edge held up to its reputation. Plenty of solid Lipper upto 55cm and beautifully marked Coranation Trout were in numbers with a mix of the odd Goldspot wrasse popping up. Snapper and Shane decided to change it up and throw Ecooda shrimp around in the 30m water on 2oz jigheads with the slow run, and the results were coming in. Snapper catching Trout after trout and Shane getting a mix of Redthroat on the plastics aswell , these boys were filling the esky by themselves. With the weather kicking up we take shelter on the Western side and anchor up at Junior Reef where the fishos bagged half a dozen solid Trout upto 4kg and patches of Tuskies. The final day ahead we drifted to try source out some red emperor , but not playing the game the boys still bagged a nice morning catch before setting sail. Big thanks to Simon for running this group of characters, they always had a sense of humour, whether it was hiding the deckies lip grippers or cable tied bail arms to rods, they never seem to to stop having a good time, pleasure to have you blokes a board and will be awesome to see you all in a couple years time. Cheers, The Mikat Team.

05.01.2022 Graham's group arrive at the commercial loading wharf ready to head out to the Swains, a new group aboard MV Mikat. We set sail and have a smooth run ahead to source out the unique fishery of the Swains. Arriving in the morning we anchor up for breakfast. Graham one of the first lines in strikes in and lands a solid trout and before breakfast we land half a dozen esky warming trout to start our journey. From there we lift anchor and set for some drift country.... Starting on the Western edge we prioritised ourselves to targeting trout. Amongst the Trout we encountered big patches of Tuskfish and also caught a Goldspot wrasse for a new species to the boys. Arvo comes and we decide to head towards the Eastern edge for the next day. Out on the Eastern the Coranation Trout were on the chew with fish up to 60cm boxed followed by a mixed box of Lipper and Tuskies. Brett had a crack on the jigs and was very new to the lure scenario, but it wasnt long and he was on. Landing a quality trout around 3kg followed by 2 more trout in a matter of minutes ,Brett was over the moon with the jigs. On the troll the fish were quiet with a few Macktuna landed for bait and the odd Trevally, Papy busts out his $13 BCF special trolling skirt and straight away it's on. A Spanish mackerel coming off a shallow shoal is landed. For the short time we trolled this lure the Yellowfin wouldn't leave it alone and really belted it. The lure saved the trolling scenario. End of week is here and we hit the Western edge and get into Redthroat our in the open. A nice bag of them on the home stretch was a good way to end the trip. Boys fatigued from the weeks adventure rest up and crack a few cold ones for the trip back in. Big thanks to Graham for organising the trip for the boys and hope you fellas enjoyed your week aboard Mikat. Big thanks, The Crew.
