25.01.2022 Steve Dunn, resident of the Monaro, shares a few magical moments early morning and late afternoon near Michelago. He would love for more people to see these views first hand, and thinks the rail trail would be one way of doing that.

25.01.2022 It seems the Colinton rail tunnel near Bredbo has a twin sister in Edinburgh UK. The Colinton UK tunnel is a bit older, opened 1874 but retired earlier in1967 whereas at Bredbo, the tunnel was opened 1889 and closed to rail traffic in May 1990. UK murals artist, Christopher Rutterford, recently gave their tunnel a new lease of life and brought it back into service as walkway/cycle path through a tunnel of art. Have a look at the UK project here http://www.colintontunnel.org.uk/ Check out Bredbo tunnel here, https://www.youtube.com/watch

22.01.2022 Recent snowfalls have brought a rush of skiers to the Snowy Mountains. This un-named character created in the workshop of Monaro farmer Sid Walters is avoiding the heavy road traffic and using the safe off road potential rail trail. With the late afternoon colours it's a fun image.

20.01.2022 Great to see the Heritage Council of NSW taking an interest in rail bridges on the Monaro. Most of the Queanbeyan to Bombala line was built in the 1880’s but the materials used and the construction techniques employed ensured the bridges survived remarkably well. At least four of the bridges along this disused rail corridor are built to a design known as Queen Truss and two of the bridges, Ingelara Creek and Bredbo River are on the NSW State heritage register. John Holland P...ty Ltd, managers of the rail corridor, refer to these two bridges as redundant assets and are now seeking comments as to their value and future. We say "put the bridges into service as part of the Monaro rail trail and they will be conserved and have a great future". The pics show three bridges, Ingelara Creek, Bredbo River and Numeralla River. All worthy of saving. See more

20.01.2022 Ken Gillespie, farmer, Otago RT trustee: 'the rail trail has transformed our community and given us diversity we wouldn't otherwise have had"

18.01.2022 Saturday morning in the Michelago valley and the view was pretty special for those up early. Steve Dunn was and good on you Steve.

18.01.2022 Is there light at the end of the Colinton Tunnel? This morning, John Barilaro, Member for Monaro and Deputy Premier for NSW, speaking on ABC radio suggested now was an appropriate time to view alternative uses of the rail corridor. He acknowledged that the business case for the Canberra to Port of Eden train service did not stack up and said it was important to continue to preserve the rail corridor for now and to look at other uses for the rail line, such as groups using the cycle way or tracks for tourism Rail trail supporters might find this heartening news. Thanks to Peter Gamble for the image of Colinton Tunnel near Bredbo.

07.01.2022 The long - awaited report on the feasibility study of the Canberra to Port of Eden rail service has been released. An executive summary issued by the NSW Government on 22 September, reveals the study has found the project is not viable. Factors contributing to the non-feasibility relate to: freight and passenger demand, the difficult terrain of the coast escarpment and restrictions on routing through the National Parks. Accommodating these physical difficulties contributed to... an estimated construction cost of $6.3 billion. The benefit cost ratio was estimated to be 0.0. If you want to read more, the Executive Summary can be found on this site- https://www.transport.nsw.gov.au//Canberra-to-Port-of-Eden The MRT committee now believes the way is now open for further discussions with stake holders at council and state and federal government levels.

07.01.2022 Residents of NSW who would like to give some support to the Northern Rivers Rail Trail might like to get behind this petition. It is directed to the NSW Government and is a call for more funding to complete Stage 2 of the Northern Rivers rail trail. Here is the link https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au//Pages/ePetition-details The team at the Northern Rivers RT would love your support.

05.01.2022 MRT is looking for supporters living in the Queanbeyan Palerang and Snowy Monaro Shires. We are applying for grants to help finish our planning and perhaps start construction. The strength of our applications will be partly based on community support. If you live in QPRC or SMRC then we would like you to send us a letter of support. Residents, business owners and associations can all help push our case. Not to sure what to say? then here are a few pointers. Rail trails are ...successful wherever they are built. The MRT will utilize an abandoned public asset. The MRT will preserve heritage rail infrastructure. The MRT is for locals and tourists to enjoy safe off-road recreation. The MRT will boost existing business and create new opportunities. The MRT feasibility study estimated an annual economic gain of $25M. Please send your letter to The Secretary, MRT Inc. 04.01.2022 Great to see this day arrive. Well done to all those who have worked so hard for many years to get this trail opened. Lets hope its the first of more great trails in NSW.

02.01.2022 Tumbarumba is the place to be. Extensive rainfall has brought the rural landscape to life, it’s lush green, the creeks are running and cycling along the new 21km Tumbarumba to Rosewood rail trail is great for a quick get away from Canberra or any where else after our long COVID shutdown. A couple of us from the MRT team made the trip a week ago and it was just great the trail is well built and the staff at our stopping points made our trip such fun. Thanks to folk at Tumba Bike and Blooms, Gone Barney Nursery and Café in Rosewood and the crew at The Union Hotel in Tumba.
