24.01.2022 On the 28th of April the MUA sought to access the Go Sirius in Dampier. Go Offshore management refused our entry and claimed that the onus is on the Union to provide transport between the security gate and the vessel. If we agreed to this, the associated costs could be into the hundreds of thousands of dollars given the various amounts of vessels in and out of the Toll facility and Dampier Mof Wharf on any given day. A cost that the Union is not prepared to pay. We all ha...ve our drivers licences, We are all prepared to go through an induction at the Toll supply base or at the Pilbara Ports Authority. There is NO reason, these port facilities cannot allow us access to our members on board of the vessels, as it happens everywhere else around the country. The Union wrote to the PPA earlier this year to have them review the current PPA practices on Union right of Entries. We have heard back from them and things are looking good with discussions progressing. As a result of Go Offshore and Toll Transport obstructing our access to the vessel, we lodged this matter before the FWC. We are on our way to the FWC today with our lawyers, for an initial conference. We believe that this matter may require arbitration, and are prepared to take this all the way if necessary! Go Offshore - You can’t be Sirius!

22.01.2022 Ian ‘Dobbo’ Dobson was one of the best. A great bloke, trade unionist and man of conviction and principle. Dobbo was an active trade unionist whether he was wor...king on offshore or onshore oil and gas projects, or kicking the red dirt. A fitter by trade, Dobbo fought not just for the rights of metal trades, but for all workers on the jobs he worked on and the workplaces he organised. He never once shied away from saying his piece or aiming up for a blue. If things weren’t right on the job, Dobbo would fight to make them right. Dobbo was active inside his own union the AMWU, and was always ready to call out the union leadership when he didn't agree with their decisions or their course of action. Which was often. Dobbo was a great supporter of the Offshore Alliance when we kicked things off in October 2018 and we always welcomed his input and advice. His passing was way too soon but he will be long remembered by those he worked with. RIP Dobbo.

13.01.2022 Our own Dr Gerry Ayres, Health and Safety Manager for the VIC/TAS Branch explains that gendered violence is a workplace hazard like any other, and should be con...trolled the same. Workplace health and safety legislation around the country requires an employer to provide a work environment that is without risk to health and safety. We are calling on the Federal Government to recognise every worker’s right to be free from all forms of violence and harassment at work. 11.01.2022 The Morrison Government is under fire following revelations that 58 foreign seafarers were granted COVID exemptions allowing them to fly to Australia and work o...n coastal trading vessels despite local workers being available to do the work. CSL Australia, the largest operator of dry bulk coastal vessels in Australian waters, was granted permission to fly the seafarers from the Philippines to Australia on a chartered Nauru Airlines flight. The foreign seafarers will be employed on vessels that primarily carry bulk materials for the construction industry between Australian ports. The Maritime Union of Australia is outraged that in the middle of a pandemic, when many Australian seafarers are out of work, the Australian Government has granted exemptions allowing foreign crews from COVID hotspots to take these jobs. The Morrison Government must explain why CSL was granted permission to fly these seafarers from a COVID hotspot into Australia to work on coastal trading vessels when local seafarers were available to fill these jobs, Maritime Union of Australia Assistant National Secretary Warren Smith said. Rather than undertake the costly and risky recruitment of workers from overseas, the Federal Government should have rejected these travel exemptions and instead required CSL to hire the highly skilled Australian seafarers who are ready and willing to undertake this work. Tens of thousands of Australians are struggling to return home, and hundreds of thousands are out of work, yet the Federal Government has been caught secretly providing COVID exemptions to a business so they can bring exploited migrant workers into the country to work on coastal vessels. Under the Abbott, Turnbull and now Morrison Government’s, CSL Australia has been allowed to remove four Australian crewed vessels from the coastal trade, replacing them with foreign-registered flag-of-convenience vessels employing exploited seafarers who can be paid as little as $2 an hour. This year alone, the Federal Government has issued CSL with more than 160 temporary licenses allowing these flag-of-convenience vessels to undertake coastal trading between Australian ports. These vessels travel between Australian ports, moving raw materials used on major construction and infrastructure projects, yet the Federal Government continues to rubber-stamp arrangements where they are crewed using exploited foreign workers. Mr Smith said the most recent Australian-crewed vessels taken out of the coastal trade by CSL Australia, the CSL Whyalla, had gone into layup in Indonesia just last month. The crew from the CSL Whyalla now face an uncertain future when they could have easily been redeployed on other vessels CSL operates around the Australian coast, he said. The Morrison Government is actively supporting the systematic removal of Aussie seafarers from the coastal trade, rubber stamping the temporary licenses that are destroying our domestic shipping industry. The current crew crisis, where foreign seafarers have been stuck on board vessels for more than a year, could easily be resolved if these crews were relieved by Australian workers. Requiring the use of Australian seafarers on coastal trading vessels would also create much-needed jobs in the midst of the economic downturn caused by the COVID crisis. https://www.mua.org.au//australian-seafarers-outraged-afte

06.01.2022 BUS LEAVING THE MUA WA BRANCH UNION ROOMS AT 12PM SHARP Request for a show of support for striking Serco workers at Fiona Stanley next Friday, 13th November 2020. Maintenance workers at Fiona Stanley Hospital are walking off the job for 24 hours from next Friday 6am to Saturday 6am in protected strike action against Serco.... Workers on this site covered by CFMEU Construction, CFMEU Mining and Energy, ETU and PPTUE have been negotiating together for the first time as a united workforce. The reaction from Serco to this show of solidarity by the workers has been predicable. They’ve stonewalled and done everything they can to discredit and undermine our right to act collectively. Despite this, the workers are united and ready to fight for their right to a living wage and a fair and safe workplace. The contract with Serco means that workers at this so-called ‘flagship’ Government hospital in WA are doing exactly the same work as all the other maintenance crews at both public and private hospitals across WA, but are paid less, have less rights and conditions, and less job security. So every single maintenance workers will be off the job and standing vigil outside the gates from 6am this Friday. Our four Unions would truly appreciate it if a delegation from your Union could come down to show your support and solidarity. We’ll have a BBQ going all day and there will be soft drinks and water available. These workers are right to take on Serco. They deserve a fair and living wage. And we know they’d really appreciate your show of support. In unity

04.01.2022 Get Your Tickets to Women of Steel! Dear Sisters The MUA WA Branch is looking to purchase 20 tickets for our female WA members to attend the screening of ‘Women of Steel’ which is being shown at Palace Cinemas, Raine Square in Perth on Thursday, 26th November at 7pm. ... 'Women of Steel' documents the complex realities of a successful campaign against inequality and discrimination, in an effort to inspire a new generation of women and working people. For those affected by injustice today, it suggests the value of building the broadest possible alliances with others to achieve shared goals, making an analysis of circumstances and opportunities, persisting in the face of difficulties and seemingly overwhelming odds, and being prepared to really struggle. Click on this link to view the movie trailer https://vimeo.com/344035067 Please note that all screenings need to reach a tipping point to go ahead, and the branch will only purchase the tickets with a commitment from 20 of our members to attend.
